We go to Encanto fairly frequently, as we enjoy the ambiance, the food, and the service.
THE AMBIANCE: sitting right on the cliffs, the view from inside is good, but from outside, it's stupendous, especially when there's a storm out at sea and the waves get a bit unruly! Inside, the best seat on a cold winter evening is right by the fire, which is a large, open affair with a generous serving of firewood. If you're immune to the elements, then the outside patio--which boasts a new four-sided fireplace--is just right. If you get too cold, ask your waiter for a blanket, which is just the ticket. Do be careful during high tides when there's a storm out to sea, as you risk a perfect drenching!
THE SERVICE: We prefer to dine at a leisurely pace without being rushed, and that's exactly what we get at Encanto. I am one of the slowest eaters in the universe, and my husband will take your arm off if you try to clear the table before everyone at the table is done! It's not an issue here. If you want fast, American-style service where your plate is cleared before you've had your last bite, I'm sure they'd be happy to accommodate you. But I do highly recommend a slower pace!
I've found the waitrons to be particularly friendly and helpful, and if your Spanish isn't up to snuff, just about everyone speaks English. The bartender is excellent, and Hugo, our favourite waiter, is a wealth of information for new-comers to Baja! The chef has come out on a couple of occasions to consult on our dishes and has been patient with this old cook and my meddlesome requests! (A splash of white wine to finish the molcajete? Why not!?)
THE FOOD: Of the entrées, I like the guacamole, the toasted cheese, and the ceviche. Of the main courses, I'll admit that I haven't delved into the pasta or salads. We make our own pasta, so we're fairly difficult to please in that arena. :\
Sometimes, we'll stop in on our way from the States for a quick margarita and their scrumptious tortilla soup. The whole fish is super (reminiscent of my husband's native Tel Aviv), with a nice crisp crust and tender white flesh--plenty for two. I'm fond of the molcajete (again, enough to split), but I also like the shrimp dishes. I've had the lobster twice, and it was a wee bit tough, but that's been my experience everywhere down here, so I suspect the blame should be placed at the source.
Excluding taco stands (Tacos Richie comes immediately to mind!) and the Valle, Encanto is our favourite go-to place. read more
