Beside not really talking to us, he wasn't too delayed with the service The food was "Eh" The pita was more of a thin bread... kinda had a chemically taste to them The basmati rice was almost flavorless beside that chemical taste again. Large portions ... but large portions of "eh" food didn't seem like a plus at the end of the day Eggplant curry was ok... Chicken kabob was better than ok.. chicken was a little dry Friends at the table ordered the qorma-sabzi... this was actually the highlight of the meal. Was super flavorful .. was glad the portion was on the larger side We sat in the private booth, where you sit with your legs under the table to give you the middle eastern vibe like your sitting on the floor That was actually pretty cool. Ive read every single review until now and the majority of the are stellar. I will chalk them up to having a simple pallet that is easily satisfied. This place was located conveniently down the street from our hotel and near the heart of downtown Coeur D'Alene. I hardly run into Afghan restaurants, so I was really excited to try this place. We came here for lunch. It wasn't very busy. I saw a few families come in, so this place is great for big groups. I ordered the Manto and my husband ordered the eggplant curry. I've had afghan manto before as an appetizer, but never as an entree. The portions were huge, and each dish were large enough for two people to share. I don't know what kind of sauces are included with these dishes, but they're so delicious. I also like the yogurt sauce that it came with. The dishes were already good by itself, but the yogurt sauce made it a lot better. I'd like to try other things next time, but you can't go wrong with the manto and eggplant curry! read more

While traveling through Coeur d'Alene, we visited Emran for dinner last night based on reviews that spoke of the authenticity of the food. The place has a darkish colored interior which initially was off-putting, but once we were seated, all was comfortable. We treated it as a shared tasting menu, starting with the vegetable patty appetizer, then a spinach dish. The beef kabab was delicious, and the eggplant dish was very nice. In addition, there was a yogurt condiment, similar to raita, that was nicely spiced and when used as a dipping sauce, worked very well. A welcome find after traveling many days and dodging the usual burger/fries menu. If this is the type of food you enjoy, I would definitely say to give Emran a try. read more

Stopped in in the middle of the afternoon. Didn't expect anyone, but shortly after we arrived a huge take out order came in, and another group joined before we left. Prompt, friendly service. We both chose naan with our mains. The kebabs came in a massive, folded over naan that was at least 3+ times larger than the kebabs. The eggplant curry was delicious with a plate sized round naan. If you like Indian food, you will love this Afghan restaurant. The spice blends have a lot of overlap. We tried the Aush as an appetizer - it's warm and savory, reminiscent of a baba ganoush. The naan is great. We shared the Manto, Karayi (with naan) and the Kabuli Pulao. All of the dishes had terrific flavor, and the Manto was especially good. You can adjust how spicy you want these dishes, they ask you on a scale of 1-5 how hot you want it. The dishes looked just as pretty in real life as the photos! The server was super friendly, and gave us some pointers on the food and drinks - we even tried their yogurt drink, which was like a savory lassi-esque drink, and it complemented our dish nicely - it was a very different and interesting drink! The ambiance was great, the seating was fun over on the left side of the house, where you sit on mats with the tables inset into the floor. Lastly, we got some desserts to go - the jelabi, pesta cubes (comes with 4), and a pesta date cookie. All of them were terrific - my partner's favorite was the pesta cubes, and my favorite was the jelabi! The food was pretty reasonably priced for a good sit down spot - we fed two adults and two kids for about $100 before tip. We didn't order any drinks except the one yogurt drink, so I don't know how the fountain and alcoholic drinks are priced. My meatballs with rice and Torshe (think giardiniera with a kick) were spectacular: well spiced and balanced flavors. The meatballs were tender, moist heaven. My wife and I came for a late lunch date. Not crowded and got very attentive service. We shared a pot of the black tea (was more than enough for a large family), and the tea had notes of cardamom, rose; warming on a cold Idaho winter day. We had all of the sides. The pickles are a the correct amount of spicy and full of funky acidic goodness. Everything paired well with the Eggplant Curry and Tikka Kabobs. We got 3/5 spice level and easily could have increased to 5/5 spice. It wasn't overpowering. You will attempt (but struggle) to clear your plates, the flavors are savory, and portions are large. DO NOT SLEEP ON THIS PLACE!!!! I tried Emran in CDA tonight with my husband. I only took the one photo because I WAS TOO BUSY STUFFING MAH FACE!! Let me just say, this is not just good Afghan food, this is good food, period. The ENTIRE LAMB SHANK nestled under the amazingly flavorful rice in the Kabuli Pulao was so juicy and tender, the meat literally fell off the bone - no knife needed. A mild yet delicious dish for those who don't love their food to be hot and spicy. The Manto, dumpling-y delicious pockets of goodness, were cooked perfectly and FULL of different flavors and textures. We ordered those at a spice level 3. They were a bit spicy, but overall just super flavorful. And the Eggplant Curry with Naan we ordered at a level 4 had a KICK! It had very complex flavors that kept me guessing and coming back for more! Sides of a raita-type yogurt sauce and a pico-type "salsa" accompanied our entrees. They were great for dipping and saucing everything! Pro Tip: Put a Manto on a piece of Naan. Do it. Not pictured were a couple of desserts we squirreled away until we got home. Um....YUM! After a week of very carb heavy food, we were looking for something that tasted homemade and we found it. The food was delicious, the curries were well seasoned and flavorful. It's a family owned restaurant and they were so welcoming to us. The family matriarch makes all the food and the love just comes through. CDA is lucky to have somewhere with such authentic middle eastern food. I was just passing through CDA on a ski trip to schweitzer and was blown away by the quality of the food. It's better than the vast majority of middle eastern food i've had in the OC and LA back in california. I was incredulous at how empty this place was on a thursday night. They absolutely deserve your patronage. I am so sad I don't have anywhere serving kebabs of this quality at home!!! I had the tikka kebabs and the monto and my girlfriend had the chicken kebabs. I'd recommend both but i'd say the tikka or chicken kebabs if you're unfamiliar with middle eastern food. The beef and chicken were both high quality and the seasoning and cook were impeccable. This place is okay. Tried it twice to get a good feel. Both times the food came out lukewarm and got cold as we took our first bites. The roasted tomato was just a charred raw tomato which was so disappointing because I love roasted tomatoes with this kind of food. The rice is really good I just wish it were served hot. The koobideh was firm both times and a bit chewy. What I absolutely love from here are the dolmas - these were actually served warm! So good. The flavors are there but the overall warmth and coziness of this cuisine are not. Service was a bit slow the second time considering how empty the restaurant was but I know they're trying their best. The plants around the restaurant don't have drainage trays so the water seeps out onto the floor... The resturant is beautiful, service was quick and enjoyable. I loved the different seating areas, one with a more traditional set up with nice patterned cushions and tables recessed into the ground, and another dining room with booths and tables. My family started with the dolmas and aush dip with naan. For entrees we had the chicken kababs, koobideh kababs, manto, and meatballs. They were served with a yogurt sauce and tomato onion salad, perfect refreshing toppings to help with the spice. The portions were huge! Everything was spectacular but my personal favorites were the meatballs and manto. We chose the spice level 3 which I felt was spicy but still able to enjoy the flavors. For dessert we had the honey conch cookie and the pesta pistachio cookie. Loved the different food from anywhere else in CDA and will definitely return! read more

The dishes are delicious and lighter than Indian food; the flavors are more subtle and don't feel as heavy in your stomach, but were also very satisfying. The service was incredible and the chef and staff make you feel so at home and welcome. I could never understand how someone could leave such an ugly review about this establishment and the people that work here.
