North 101 Rest Stop in Trinidad…read more We were passing through the seaside city of Trinidad in Humboldt County. From Eureka we were on our way to Crescent City. The rest stop is in a woodsy redwood forest area on the Redwood Highway. Nice and clean facilities with amenities including drinking water. It almost looks like a camping ground. I'm not sure if you can camp here but it would be cool if you can. They have a picnic area onsite with chairs, picnic tables and bear proof trash bins. Eight hour parking allowed. The rest stop is on the side of U.S. 101 Northbound... beautiful and quiet spot for a rest area. I wanted to explore a little bit more and follow the paved trail but we had a schedule to keep at the Battery Point Lighthouse in Crescent City which is only accessible at low tide. Window & door seals are nonexistent so you can hear the highway, the parking lot noise, the wind/rain, etc. Somewhat of an industrial and also semi dodgy area. Large semi trucks. Typical long stay motel/hotel type guests loitering around outside. I'd say it's a fine place for the price relative to other options in the area. Just be vigilant and probably don't leave anything in your car. That's more related to town as a whole and not just the block where this motel is located.

All of the chairs in the dining room sink so low, you can just rest your chin on the table and shovel it in. What I found most problematic with this hotel is the lip service to ADA accommodations. There are no grab bars in the bathroom, not even soap dishes you could cling too if you slipped on the very slippery tub floor. The lighting and the switches to the lighting are incredible dim in the room making impossible to see with black on black backgrounds. For low visibility people, the randomly placed 'mood' lighting keeps people like me in the dark. Finally, for people with physical disabilities, getting one's luggage on a cart, then to an elevator, then into a room with extremely heavy doors that swing back so quickly, an injury is almost guaranteed. Unfortunately, I experienced all of this at Holiday Inn express in Eureka. I mentioned some of my difficulties to the registration desk, staff, and as nice as they were, they didn't care... they say they'll remodel next year, but if they really cared about providing accommodations for Americans with disabilities, they make the changes now.

This is a very historical property in old town Eureka near the marina. The building itself is very…read moreinteresting and beautiful inside, but felt a bit confusing. It is dark inside and smells "old". Our room was nicely decorated in old Victorian. It was overlooking the corner of 2nd & C right over the Irish pub. Everything was clean and nice inside. Bathroom was small but well stocked with supplies. The issue is more with the area. We took a walk after we arrived through the marina and old town area and concluded that we didn't feel terribly safe. We decided to stay in after dark. There were plenty of homeless and very "sketchy" people walking around talking loudly to themselves, etc. Know the rooms have no air conditioning so the hosts opened a couple of windows facing C street, which we left open all night, hoping that street wouldn't be terribly noisy. Fortunately, the Irish pub below us closes around 9:00, and the Mexican restaurant across the street was the same. By 9:30 or so the street was very quiet with only the occasional car and lone, loud motorcycle around midnight. Also there is no TV in the room, so bring your own entertainment! The WiFi didn't work either. We couldn't find the WiFi the hosts provided on check in. Overall, this area of town is trying to revive and the hosts are trying to bring back this hotel. Just be aware!

For that reason, you should interpret any criticism I have as not being an issue at other properties. Ok...that said, my new favorite Hilton brand is Home2. Why? Because it has everything I like in a hotel when I travel. First though...a criticism for this property AND Hilton as a whole for not policing it better. During my last five stays, the remote check-in feature on the app did not let me check in and when I tried to check in that way for this property, I received a pop-up telling me it wasn't allowed and that I needed to check in at the front desk. The two people working the front desk denied that the hotel had it set that way, but I'm seeing a trend where the properties are requiring a hard credit card for check in again and not allowing Apple Pay or other variations where a physical card isn't used. They even went so far as to tell me that it was probably like that because my card on file wasn't good...then they promptly asked if I wanted to use my card on file for the stay...which worked perfectly. The bottom line is that Hilton franchises aren't being policed very well by Hilton for this feature, so don't expect to be allowed to remote check-in. Ok...back to what I liked about the property. The rooms were nice and clean...albeit smaller than Hampton rooms of the same type. Each of the rooms we had (we usually have two rooms when we travel) were equipped with a full refrigerator, a microwave, fully functioning sink and a dishwasher. The cabinets had all the dishes we needed too. The pantry was the best I've seen in a hotel of this type. Period. The pool and hot tub were well taken care of and there was also a barbecue section that looked like it was well used by the guests. The only other criticism I have is around parking. They didn't have enough spaces set aside for Diamond members, so parking can be challenging. There were lots of trade people staying there while we stayed and there could not have been less than 20 work vans and trucks - taking up multiple spaces in some cases. That's why I was bummed they didn't have more reserved parking spaces. All in all, it's a nice property and it will be our go-to place when we visit Eureka in the future. If you're heading that way, I'd check them out.

If it was any other day we would have gotten up and walked out, but it being Valentine's Day we knew we how hard it would be to try to walk in anywhere else. It was so bad they comped our dinners. She even threaten to hang up and end the call. Poor customer service from Tina G. I hope someone above her sees this review. You get an table with 2 chairs and a desk/desk chair. The location was perfect as it's just about an 9mins drive to the sequoia zoo skywalk and the dunes. Nearby there's also In N Out, drive thru fast food restaurants, plenty of stores and gas stations. There's an ice machine and vending machines on each floor. Dogs are welcome for a fee, $30. The hot tub and pool area is gorgeous. Provided a very nice ambiance during the day and night. Parking free and complimentary breakfast was decently basic.
