Anyone complaining about the lack of lighting, you do realize its called The Hideaway now, right? This isn't just a great deli shoved into a tiny building anymore. This is more of an upscale dive bar and restaurant and a breath of fresh air in this town. And that's something this city of 5 smells could use. The art on the wall is superb, I wanted to buy a couple but they aren't for sale.. Yet.. ;) As for the food, I've eaten here 5 times, haven't had the same thing twice or a bad meal yet. The shrimp Rangoon pizza is out of this world, followed closely by the Thai Chicken. OUTSTANDING! The dynamite shrimp blew my tongue out of my mouth with the cavalcade of flavors. My woman absolutely loves the pickle chips.. Whatsthat? I haven't had a burger in this town that can compare to what these guys are doing in the kitchen. I hear they're hand grinding all of the hamburger meat in house and it surely tastes like it. This place hasn't been open 2 weeks and its completely surpassed any expectations I had. I visited Cedar Rapids on business recently. I tried Emil's and was not disappointed. In fact, I went back for dinner on my second night in town. I was there early, but the place started to fill up almost as soon as the clock hit 5:00. It's clearly popular. The ambiance is nice - low lit. Service was good, too. The cheeseburger I had was really good, and I say that as someone who loves a good burger. (I usually opt for a plain cheeseburger (no toppings) when I want to judge hamburger quality. This one stood up to the test,) I liked the place so much that I stopped by again the next evening. I tried the grilled cheese this time. Can a grilled cheese be too cheesy? Second time I've been here and while it's a fun atmosphere I find the food lacking. Tj8s time I had the Cuban wontons. The y were interesting but somewhat bland. Perhaps a little more pickle in them would have helped. One friend had the Rueben and said there's was hardly any sauerkraut on it. A nice portion of meet, but she ended up asking for horseradish to give it some flavor. Another friend had the crab Rangoon wontons. I snuck one..not bad but extremely spicy. While visiting town, some locals suggested this place as a gem. I must agree. The atmosphere is unique, comfortable and friendly. At the reccomendation of Madison, my stellar server, I tried the Cuban sandwich. I have had numerous Cubans but this one was outstanding! This place was great! It definitely looked like a hideaway--as in it's nothing special from the outside. The inside had a cool, swanky atmosphere. Everything we tried on the menu was great. We got the redneck nachos and some drinks. All were awesome! I split the French dip sandwich and fries with someone else and they went the extra mile to put it on two separate plates and give us each our own bowl of au jus. Nice touch! It's not right off the main road but set back quite a ways behind another building so look for the sign. Service was perfect and they have a pretty decent, lengthy beer selection. Started with fried pickles that were hot, seasoned and fried perfectly, but the main course was disappointing. Had a junior American classic burger (definitely go for the junior unless you're absolutely starving) with a side of Mac and cheese. Only a hideaway in that it's behind a Taco John's and a secondhand sports equipment store...otherwise that space is strange. The entire space is almost completely open, with a few smaller 'walls' outlining the seating/dining area, with a large open space between these seating areas and the large, mid-tall bar area. Any customer at the bar can see any other customer in the entire place, from seats to the bathroom and everywhere in-between. Negative points there. Beer selection, on tap and in bottler/can is decent. Once upon a time it would have been above par, but most places today have 9/10 the same selection and usually lower prices. Some craft brews, all on offer in a tall 22oz pour, but the selection and service gets a 'meh'. I had the spicey chicken rangoons (7/10) and the 'Hawkeye' sandwich, which was served on Texas Toast instead of the Sourdough the menu stated. Overall the sandwich was tasty, but the Texas toast was soggy/mushy and gave the whole thing a doughy texture. great potential here, awful execution as it stands. I visited on a saturday morning and the staff was attentive if overly relaxed (multiple employees were sitting at the bar nearby , horseplay and gossip in the air) with multiple TVs playing the game (Iowa Hawkeyes FTW!). A little separation of bar/seating areas would do wonders for the overall 'theme' of a hideaway, and some way to fill the massive empty space between the two would do wonders. lighting was right for the most part, but the inclusion of some cheap video games and the associated children running around killed the overall vibe. Ate here twice during work training in Cedar Rapids. It's definitely a solid restaurant that offers food that will appeal to most every diner. It's clean and there is ample seating. It has a bar, booths and tables (high tops and regular). It's rather dark inside but not obnoxiously. The wait staff is attentive and the food comes quick. Both visits I had a sandwich and fries. My favorite was the philly cheese steak sandwich with grilled onions and peppers. I was told the pizza is awesome but the rest of my party didn't want pizza. The food was good and portion sizes were everything they should be. I am a foody and I understand the food and labor costs that go into FRESH HANDCUT/HANDMADE FOOD. I emphasis this point because it grinds my gears when people want fast food prices for 10x the quality. Service was great, keep it up. Again I was very, very happy with the portion sizes for the price of HANDMADE appetizers and sandwhiches. Right on par with other restaurants that serve the same type of food. The pork tenders appetizer was phenomenal! I think they might use pork belly which is a littly fatty for my taste, but I was completely fine with cutting those parts off. Some kinks to be worked out, but that is to be expected from a new place. In conclusion, if you are more than happy to eat the "protein" at Taco Bell, or you think Applebee's is the best thing sinced sliced bread, this is not the place for you. read more

I really liked Emil's. It is set off the main road as others have noted. The food is good, they have a good selection of taps and a better selection of bottles! Everything is well priced. The interior is large, with high top, bar, and booth seating for couples and groups. It is dark, with rope lights, dark wood tables, floors, and walls...so it has more of an upscale feel vs a BW3.
