It is a rustic setting, but don't think the décor of Cracker Barrel, it is much nicer than that. Try the upper level outdoor deck for a ideal view of the Iowa agricultural heaven. The menu is varied, with something for everyone. Our party had four different entrees, with remarks like 'very good' and 'ok'. French Onion soup was pretty good for starters, made with swiss cheese, my preference is mozzarella, but still tasty. We shared the Pig Sty dessert, which was large enough for 4 to share. Specials on Fridays, Saturdays, and Sunday afternoons. Our server, Jordan, was excellent. Attentive, but not overbearing at all, willing to explain the menu, and give some info on the barn itself. He also answered our question about the upstairs, reservable, Lover's nook, which is quite unique. He also asked how our food was at the end of the meal, and...he actually asked what they could do to make a dish better. That is a plus. Will most likely return to try some of the other dishes, being as it is a very nice pastural drive. If the food can consistently match the atmosphere I could bump up the rating without question.

I hope those so quick to villify Whitey's (especially those who have never met Whitey, nor patronize his business) are as quick to jump on the apology bandwagon. My daughters and I met friends for dinner at Whiteys a few days before the "incident" and had a typical experience there - fast, friendly service, and great food at a reasonable price. The bar/restaurant has nice decor, is VERY clean and well-maintained. At a recent visit, Daron Rubner stopped by our table a couple of times to banter with the girls, and then sent them both bowls of ice cream (just to be nice) after they were done eating. My older daughter took it upon herself to leave Whitey a thank you note written on a napkin, with a P.S. that read "Whitey, you're the best!". We have gone back to Whitey's since the incident, and will make it a point to do so more often in the future. I would venture to guess most of the negative ratings/comments are from those who have never stepped foot in Iowa, let alone this establishment. I prefer to form my opinions on personal experience. It's too bad that others prefer to rely on half-truths in an attempt to sabotage a local business that supports the community. read more

My original review was deleted ( didn't think business owners could delete reviews but I guess they can). Here are the specifics. I ate at Whiteys on 7/3/15 on my way home from iowa city. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and my husband ordered a mushroom Swiss burger. It took forever to get our drinks and food both. When we got them, the fries were cold and the burgers over cooked. We tried to speak with the wait staff but they were too busy drinking at the bar. read more

The variety of appetizers is solid and we almost always get at least two because it's so hard to decide. The pork belly burnt ends and cheese bread are regular favorites for us. The barbecue strangely enough is solid for a place that doesn't do it regularly. I usually get some type of chicken sandwich and the chicken is always moist and above average. The only "cons" I have. Sometimes the service can be a touch slow. This isn't super common, but has happened once or twice for us. Second: the kids chicken tenders just do not look appealing and my son isn't impressed by them. They're dry and honestly they'd be better off getting premade frozen ones cause these ones aren't great. The fries however make up for this ten fold as my son is obsessed with their fries. Otherwise, this place is solid. We recommend it to friends and family regularly and it's a great spot if you're wanting to try something unique.

For all of the TV's that they have, they could have a "main event". I don't care if it's golf, college basketball, or baseball really. Playing 80's rock when there's 20 TVs with sporting events is the only reason I went with 4 starts instead of 5. The reuben sammy is my go-to.

I appreciate how clean they keep the eating areas when so many customers make a mess with their syrup or their drinks but they can't catch everything. They add sugar crystals that add a sugary crunch that is pleasant to myself, and when you add their salty breakfast churned butter it'll make you moan out loud. Best of all, waffles are served until closing and are prime drinking food. Once again I can't not rate this 10/10 (and yes, the double negative is valid sine it conveys my meaning.
