As a runner, I felt like I had hit a plateau and wasn't seeing the progress I wanted. Since I had very little experience with strength training, I decided to work with a personal trainer and was recommended to reach out to Jake. My goal was to get stronger while building the confidence to continue lifting on my own after our sessions ended. I trained with Jake for about six months, and throughout that time he really listened to my goals and tailored each workout to my needs and comfort level. I was able to continue doing what I love--running--while making steady progress in the gym. Partway through training, I developed a minor stress fracture in my foot that made even walking uncomfortable. I have been training with Jake for over a year and I posted a prior review. Everything still holds true, he's a fantastic coach and I couldn't be happier with my progress. In addition to myself, Jake has recently been coaching my 13 year old son at boxing. I have to say that his approach to coaching teenagers is phenomenal. He knows when to be tough and when to ease my son into certain techniques and principles. I must admit that I was never the most athletic or coordinated person, and the apple didn't fall far from the tree as they say, but my son has improved his speed and conditioning tremendously since working with Jake. I first started training with Jake in an effort to improve my squat form. During the months prior, I was struggling to incorporate back squats into my program because my legs had gotten strong enough to lift weights that were heavy enough to cause back pain (due to my poor form). Through weeks of specialized training, I was able to get my form to a point where it was essentially perfect, and I haven't had any back pain from squats since we started working together. In addition to back squats, Jake significantly improved my form on several other complex movements such as deadlifts, bench press, weighted pull-ups, etc. His thorough understanding of biomechanics is made clear through drills designed to train certain "cues" on compound movements. Beyond his nuanced coaching in the gym, Jake also puts an incredible amount of thought into programming and nutrition. Every workout is carefully structured with a clear purpose, balancing exercise selection, volume, intensity, and progression based on your particular goals and capacity to recover. Despite the level of detail, he consistently updates the program as needed (which is typically every one to two weeks) to reflect progress and recovery. His meal coaching is equally detailed, providing practical guidance that is easy to follow while still being tailored to whatever goals you may set out to achieve. For me, the focus was on building muscle, but I was able to cut body weight closer to the summer. Rather than offering generic advice (e.g., a calorie deficit or surplus), he takes the time to explain the reasoning behind specific recommendations, making it much easier to stay consistent and to understand how training and nutrition work together to produce long-term results. Overall, Jake has been one of the most knowledgeable, attentive, and effective coaches I've worked with. Jake has been an incredible partner in my recovery journey since I blew out my knee playing tennis. I was referred to him after finishing PT, and from day one his focus has been getting me back to competitive tennis, not just "cleared," but actually confident and strong on the court again. What can I say. Jake is an absolute killer of a coach. I've been going to the gym consistently for about 3 years now and I thought I knew what I was doing.
