Where to begin-- I went from being a D1 college athlete to a very sedentary lawyer, and working out started to feel like a chore. I was worried about re-injuring my knee and honestly felt pretty insecure in the gym. When I was planning my wedding, I decided I wanted to commit--not just to looking better, but to feeling better too. That's when I got connected with Kevin. At first, I was anxious about committing, but Kev made the entire process feel manageable from day one. He's incredibly easy to talk to--honest, encouraging, and very knowledgeable. He created a plan that was tailored to me, taking into account my long hours, daily routine, timeline, and personal goals. He takes the time to understand your life and builds a program around you, so making changes doesn't feel overwhelming or restrictive. It feels sustainable. The level of care, support, motivation, and accountability he brings is truly something special. He knows when to push you and when to meet you where you are. I genuinely believe he can work with anyone. I can't say enough good things about him. It's been a long time since I've felt this strong and comfortable in my own skin, and that's largely because of Kev. I cannot thank him enough. Highly, highly recommend. read more

I'm already feeling so strong and like my best self, and I can't wait to see how much better it gets. Kevin is the best investment I've made! He is professional and genuinely enjoys training and teaching. When someone truly has a passion for helping others, it shows. If you're trying to take your fitness and health goals to the next level, Kevin is your man. In just the short amount of time I've been training with him, he's already proven that he knows exactly what he's doing. I've lost about 10lbs. of body fat while maintaining my muscle. I've worked with other trainers in the past who were really good, but Kevin's program is on another level. It's very well structured with great workouts. Not only does he focus on progressive overload (and tracking that progress through his app), but he also emphasizes nutrition and caloric intake. He takes your lifestyle, job, and overall routine into account. I didn't think balancing my work life with my fitness and health goals would be possible, but he has made the journey so much easier and more enjoyable. Something else I really appreciate is his background in physical therapy. He tailors his program to your personal goals and listens when you have an injury or are experiencing pain. He knows exactly how and when to intervene, making sure you continue progressing safely. On top of all that, he's genuinely fun to be around, which makes every session something I look forward to. read more

Working with Kev was an amazing experience. I have been consistently lifting for about 10 years, but with life getting busy, managing my diet and making exercise routine modifications became something that I did not focus on as much as I used to. Kev took the mental work out of managing my diet and exercise routines so that I could bring my fitness gains to the next level. For a body recomp over a period of 12 weeks, I went from about 14%BF to 8%BF with relative ease. If you want to take yourself to the next level, teaming up with Kev is definitely the way to go! read more

I wanted to come and update my review left 1 year ago, 1 year ago almost exactly I posted that Coach Kevin Matua had helped me push past my plateaus and define my true fitness goal: Compete in a Men's Physique Body Building Competition and 1 year later I am happy to announce, with Coach Kevin's help and Made by Matua , I put on 35lbs of mass and muscle and cut it off in what is known as "show prepping" (prepping for a body building competition) and in 20 weeks of show prep I lost nearly 20% body fat and 35 lbs, competed and placed in my competition leaving with 2 medals, 1 of which a top 3 finish, the second a top 6 finish in the most competitive division of the men's physique line up. None would have been possible without the expert coaching of Coach Kevin and Made by Matua, I cannot recommend them enough. read more

Kevin works as a partner in fitness~ not just as a personal trainer. His genuine care for his clients shows in every workout- and every conversation. Kevin truly excels in shaping his work to fit you, and your body's needs. I came to Kevin with a host of modifications to make for my body due to several past injuries. He was quick to adjust and find routines that work for my body to build strength in order to minimize modifications and prevent injury in the future. Due to my history of injuries, it's been hard to find a consistent routine that keeps me moving, but doesn't hurt my body~ Kevin has a fantastic wealth of knowledge that has helped to increase my stamina and strength in the year or so we've worked together, even if he has to get creative with how to work certain muscle groups. Wight loss is part of my goal~ but isn't my largest goal and Kevin is my champion either way. He's truly a personal trainer; able to modify to what the person in front of him needs to be successful in their fitness goals. He pushes you when you need it, and lets you cry at him if it's been a hard week. Scheduling has never been an issue with him either. I work events so it can be challenging for me to meld to a set schedule, but that's never been a problem with Kevin's calendar. He's always been extremely flexible with scheduling time! After moving from a situation, my best friend sent my number to kevin, and have been training with him since July and it is now september. He's really helped me out, and have me actually learn how to work out and take care of myself. I didn't really know how to work out until I worked with Kevin. The way he cares is by holding me accountable for what I do, making sure I log in the food I eat, and as well as logging in my workouts. When you train with him, you're definitely not alone. He looks out for you when you workout, and gives you constructive feedback when needed. I lost 10 pounds since I began and gain muscle mass. I am still a work in progress and still working with him as of now. Really appreciate the dude, and all he does. He works really hard and puts everything in, let alone the way he trains his clients. He designs a program for what is suitable for you and your fitness goals. He knows what he is doing. Wonderful to work with, good attitude, hardworking, and humble. tl;dr - Kevin Matua has been a wonderful help to my girlfriend's weight loss journey. My partner has been struggling with weight problems the entire pandemic; she looks great but she's hit "the great plateau". I wanted to support her and recommended that she try Kevin's services after doing an initial consultation with him. I've got to say: Kevin's gone above and beyond for her. He's helped her not only lose weight but build a healthier lifestyle. He's taught us that exercise is not just a physical gain; it's a massive mental gain. Mood going in... Anxious - My girlfriend has body image issues and needs to see results quickly enough or she loses motivation. I count on Kevin to hold her accountable and manage her mental expectations. Must Tries: 1. Kevin's online exercises. Sometimes it's hard to make it to the gym or you want to do more outside the gym. Kevin has a mobile app that will send you personalized workouts so that you never lose momentum regardless of your busy schedule or circumstances. 2. Follow Kevin's nutrition guide. Kevin's workouts are no joke. You need to come with energy. By following Kevin's nutrition plan, my gf has been able to get the most of out her exercises and see results faster. Reasons to go... 1. Kevin's form correction is done like no other. He's very respectful and explains exercises in a way that's easy to understand. 2. He's a previous physical therapist and has certifications proving he's THE MOST AMAZING AND QUALIFIED trainer in OC Reasons not to go... 1. If you're not looking to make long-lasting connections between your mental and physical health? Takeaways/tips... 1. Over two years with Kev and Made by Matua and it continues, without question, to be the best decision I have ever made. And I don't say that lightly. Kev has helped me cut my body fat percentage in half (!), the last 5% of which I didn't think was possible. Kev pushed me to believe I could do hard things, and was incredibly supportive when I decided to train for my first Triathlon. He provided custom training plans, nutrition goals, and continuous motivation. He showed up early and stayed late, making sure I was mentally and physically on track. As much as my mother would disagree, I'm not special. Kev has this level of dedication to Every. Single. Client. I've been around long enough to see it firsthand. If you are here, I am certain that you have seen "Train With Dave" on Yelp and were attracted to the slick advertising and good reviews. Do yourself a favor: contact Kev before you make a decision. I used to "Train with Dave," and you will ultimately find that you are just another number, assigned to any one of several trainers (none of them are Dave himself), none with Kev's track record, knowledge, or experience. Might as well sign up with a trainer at 24 or LA Fitness and save yourself the money. Let Kev make your goal his priority. Whether you are trying to get into fitness for the first time or you are training for your next competition, Kev is going to get you to your goal faster, safer, and while having a lot more fun. read more

This is my second time doing personal training sessions with Kevin. The first time I had pt sessions, I saw great results. I had begun training with Kevin in 2021 and stopped in 2022... and now I'm back. Kevin does a great job of explaining each exercise he has you do in a way that makes sense for you to repeat on your own. He is very responsive, so if you have questions and send him a text he is quick to reply. He is encouraging with his clients and is flexible to work around your schedule. Definitely cannot recommend him enough. read more

What you're looking for: a great personal trainer that can help you achieve your fitness goals. What you'll get: that, plus a truly fantastic human being. I have been a client of Kevin's for the past three years at this point and what truly makes him stand out is the amount that he cares about the people he trains. It sounds super cheesy, but that level of empathy is what makes Kevin truly stand out amongst the trainers I've encountered. We've had our fair share of conversations during our sessions about the latest movies and all of that...but he's also been a great support system during the less-than-good weeks, listening when needed and providing advice when asked. On the fitness front, Kevin is constantly pushing his own limits as a trainer in giving the best workouts based on what you're looking for. He's also got great hookups for meal prep services if you're looking for that, which I know has been a lifesaver for me time-wise trying to hit the nutrition measurements we've set. And as for scheduling, he'll work with you to find times that work best for what you need and is always open to figuring out a better time if something comes up, and that flexibility is super appreciated when needed. Kevin is what you want in personal trainer, trust me: he's communicative, attentive, knowledgeable, empathetic, adaptable, and consistent. He'll definitely get you to where you're going fitness-wise, and you'll enjoy the journey along the way. read more

Training with Kevin has changed my mindset on health and fitness. I was doing cardio and Pilates before here and there but wasn't seeing any results. I was also always afraid of working with weights because of back problems, but Kevin created a workout plan that was truly pain-free and produced results in just the first month. He always asks me how I'm feeling and adjusts my workouts accordingly as well. Kevin is fun to train with and he also makes sure to explain the science behind why and how I should be eating a certain way. From just the first couple sessions you can feel that he's really passionate about personal training and cares about helping people. I feel like I'm in good hands and that he's dedicated to helping me improve. I've been training with Kevin for a few months now and I enjoy every session! read more

Self Made has been by far my favorite gym and I personally never thought I would ever say that. The reason I can now have the confidence to say it is thanks to my trainer Kevin Matua. I've been coming here since July 2024 and it has been a whirlwind of knowledge and learning. My fiancé had been trying to convince me to make the changes I wanted to see in myself physically as well as mentally. He had started working out with a new trainer and gave me the little push I needed to at least try in out, this lead me to Kevin. The thing about Kevin is he doesn't just show up to give you a good workout and to do his job. He actually takes the time to explain the "why" behind every exercise and the why behind the nutrition. His passion for fitness truly shines through every session. This in turn has changed my perspective about fitness as well. I use to be mortified about walking into any gym and I would feel like I had no idea what I was doing and being judge by anyone who looked my way. It was Kevin who boosted that confidence and really provided the knowledge I needed to push that self doubt out of my head. Yes I've lost weight, body fat, gained muscle and this is just the beginning but I feel I've gained so much more! Thank you Kevin! This is just the beginning and I have no need to slow down or stop the journey that we just begun. read more

I've been a client of Kevin's since March of 2022 and I've never considered a different trainer since! I started my fitness journey with Kevin after gaining 30lbs within 2 months due to new medications. My old workout regime wasn't able to shed off the stubborn weight and I was at a loss. I discovered Made by Matua through a friend and he's been nothing but a pleasure to work with. As someone with a herniated disc, I was afraid that it would impede my likelihood of success in the gym long-term due to my restricted capabilities. To my surprise, Kev helped me overcome this obstacle through his prior experience working in physical therapy. He was able to implement stretches and adjust my workouts to relieve the pain and prevent further injury whilst still increasing/maintaining my muscle mass. Although I still proceed with caution, I now have full mobility in my back and can continue training pain-free! Kev is an absolute stellar trainer, and his clients adore him! His thirst for knowledge and his passion for his craft shine brightly, making him a commendable trainer to have. He has an answer for any question and a solution for any roadblock. Kev listens to your concerns, cares about your goals, and provides support wherever he can! Your goals are his goals, and he'll equip you with all the guidance, knowledge, and encouragement you need to push and challenge yourself! read more

If you're thinking about it, here is your answer. Book the consultation!! Regardless if you've worked out before, done sports, or have a background in health/wellness. Kevin will guide you to your goals. For me, work had become increasingly & physically demanding and I was reluctant to fully get into weight training again. After each session, I walked away with new information/techniques and a gratifying sweat. I initially maintained a healthy skepticism but he eased me in. Kevin identified issues with my hip flexors which brings me to understand my limited range of motion during specific work outs. Hands down. Mind blowing. You truly see the program created for you is individualized. The personal in personal training is such an understatement. Though the sessions have come to end, I'm eager and feel confident to apply all that I've learned from Kevin! read more

He is by far one of the best trainers I have ever met. He has a vast knowledge of the training profession that is astounding. He is able to look at your form and instantly see how to improve it and can tell you where your pain might be coming from a simple look. He is very down to earth and helpful. The thing I like about training with him the most however, is that he teaches you instead of just training you and gives you the tools to make long term healthier changes to your life. read more

I've worked out for most of my life, but the workouts and education that Kevin provided to me was life changing. Even though I only had online classes through him, he was always available to talk. Not only does he answer your question, but he provides detail, background and research to your question. This was definitely the kind of training I never received before. My husband works out with Kevin once or twice a week and he always comes out stronger (and more challenged) than before. I wish I knew Kevin when I first started to workout so I could avoid fad diets and workouts that don't do anything for me. He gave me online workouts and modified my workouts based on my goals. He knows how to teach proper form as well as nutrition. You won't regret having Kevin as your trainer! read more

I started training with Kevin after I saw the results he got with my wife! He made the nutrition and workouts simple and easy for me to follow despite my busy schedule. In about 2 months, I'm down 7% body fat or 20 lbs of body fat since I started. Kevin designs my workouts so that each session is a full body workout. I like that because we're not working to failure for each muscle group, I'm not super sore afterwards, and am still seeing good results. I highly recommend Kevin if you're thinking about personal training in the OC area! read more

He's knowledgeable with what he's doing and doesn't expect me to starve myself in order to get results. So far, I've felt nothing but increased confidence and I appreciate the push he's given me. After going through a drastic life change and falling off the gym for months, I found myself struggling to re-define and achieve my fitness goals. My motivation and discipline fell short, so I knew that I needed the guidance of an expert in the field to reestablish my why and how to get there. I knew what I was looking for in a trainer and after meeting with many, Kevin was the one who stood out to me. His EXTENSIVE knowledge expands outside the gym as he holds credentials within the physical therapy field- so you bet that he understands the foundation of the body and how to properly correct it through exercise and stretches. It has been a month since I began working with Kevin and the changes have been drastic: My strength continues to increase allowing me to set new PR's every week (no more plateau). My form has improved thanks to his constant positive constructive criticism, and the lower back pain I endured when lifting is pretty much gone. In the first 25 years of my life, I somehow managed to avoid consistent gym attendance, and so, going to the gym was a test of confidence. I felt awkward and misplaced amongst the alien machines. Kevin was the first trainer I've worked with, and my experience with subsequent trainers have emphasized the his excellence and experience. I looked forward to the hour we worked out together, and my body felt like it always pushed to my limits without injury. His explanations of anatomy helped me parse how my body should feel during lifting and stretching, and helped me avoid pain that I felt when I was working out alone. Most importantly, talking with Kevin felt comfortable. We eased between discussions about working out and conversations about life. We discussed books and relationships, shared our daily travails and small hopes. Quarantine will always be remembered with some amount of pain, but I'm glad to have met Kevin. It's hard to describe all that working out with Kevin has done for me, but it can summed up simply with "I made a yelp account so I could give Kevin 5 stars." 6 months into my program with Kevin and it has changed my outlook on fitness. As someone who has always struggled with maintaining a consistent diet and routine, Kevin slowly eased me into this transition with a strong emphasis on sustainability. Under his guidance, I learned to appreciate the progress I was making despite the minor setbacks. Not only is Kevin a highly qualified trainer, but he is also my strongest support system throughout this entire journey. Making him proud was more rewarding than the results itself. Just do it! I assume if you are reading this review you are thinking about getting a personal trainer like I was just over 6 months ago. Trust me when I say, just do it. You won't regret signing up with Kevin. He is kind and will get you where you need to be with your health and fitness goals. I'm in my early 50's and was just starting to feel like I was gaining weight and was having a hard time just trying to get a few pounds off because it is so much harder at this age to lose weight than in past years. I was getting frustrated so finally decided I wanted to find someone who could help get me back on track. I found Kevin and he did just that! He got my nutrition and macro plan set up first and knowing that he was looking at my food intake in the app made me feel more accountable for what I was eating. His workouts are awesome and he will make sure you are comfortable with all of the exercises. I hurt my knee (outside the gym) at one point and he was great at helping me work around that and even taped it up for me which I really think helped it to heal faster. My original plan was to stick with a trainer for 3 months just to get my mindset adjusted and change my habits, but here I am 6 months later and I don't want to stop because I am seeing great results! I have lost 10 lbs. of fat and gained muscle too. I feel strong and healthy and am fitting back into dresses that were on the verge of being donated because I didn't think I would get back into them and look good. Don't hesitate. Kevin is awesome and on top of being a great trainer, he is just a really nice guy and enjoyable to see each time we work out. read more

I was a bit skeptical going into the consult, but I'm glad I didn't talk myself out of it. Kevin is an all around great guy which makes him that much better as a trainer, but the little details that mean the most to me: 1. Well educated on all things fitness. I like to nerd out on the science and he keeps up 2. Incredibly accommodating with my busy and ever changing work schedule 3. He'll adjust and adapt to whatever my mental state is for the day (whether I need a gentler, more supportive approach or I feel like getting my butt kicked, etc. lol) His passion for personal training really shows in how he treats his clients and the genuine effort he puts into them read more

I can't say enough about Kevin and how amazing he is! I had double leg injuries in 2019. And kept telling myself I get myself back in shape and kept putting it off and wasn't doing it. I was at my heaviest weight I've ever been. So I sought out Kevin. Kevin didn't judge or come with any predisposed notions when we met. He has an amazing attitude and a let's do this! He was always encouraging and pushed me to do better. I trained with him for a year and am stronger than ever. I also lost about 30lbs and I'm still losing. I'm leaving for deployment so I couldn't stay but he still checks on me. Any person that trains with him is definitely getting the best trainer there is.
