We were on a quest during our lunch break for a food truck. There was supposed to be one down the…read morestreet, but apparently, they're not there anymore. Then, we saw this one and decided to try it out. The entire menu was in Spanish and neither of us are native speakers nor have we taken it in school. Lucky for us, I'm from California, so I can understand enough to order some food. How hard can it be, right? Being that the menu is in Spanish, I make the assumption they probably don't speak English or their English is limited, right? (After eating here and before posting this review, I read the reviews and it's confirmed you have to order in Spanish.) Luckily I had enough understanding to order and we got everything we wanted, with no glitches. So I had no true understanding what the lady was saying, but I think I did a pretty good job assuming what was said, as I understand a few words here and there. I was expecting the pupusas to be small...about 3 inches in diameter and pretty thin. Let me tell you...they were probably about 6 inches in diameter, pretty full of filling. We got the chicken and cheese. They were really good. We also ordered the carne asada. The meat was pretty chewy, but was salty and flavorful. The rice, in my opinion was a little blah. It had enough seasonings, but it's not not my cup of tea. I prefer Mexican rice. You get a scoop of salsa and some salad with some kind of red sauce in a baggie. It didn't really taste like anything...maybe watered down tomato juice or something similar? The salad has seen better days. It was starting to brown, so we didn't eat it. It was supposed to come with 3 tortillas, but it came with 2. We were expecting them to give us either flour or corn tortillas, however, what came were tortillas that looked like thinner pupusas without filling. They weren't bad, but I would have preferred regular tortillas. Overall, it's not really that bad for the first time trying out El Salvadorean food. I can't attest to the authenticity of it, but nonetheless, it was pretty good. Next time, we'll skip the carne asada and stick to just a pupusa or 2. Pupusas were advertised as $2.50 each. We ordered 3. Our total was $21, so I am assuming the Carne Asada was $13.50. There were no prices for anything other than the pupusas.

There's too few pupuserias in Austin! Overall a mediocre food experience, but if you're in the mood…read morefor papusas, not much choice for us here. Met up with friends and one of them loved the authentic vibes. When we're the only non-Hispanic people in a relatively full restaurant it's a good sign! Usually "authentic" when on the cheaper side means that it's cheaper quality but full of flavor, as people with lower incomes know how to make great tasting food that's filling for a lower cost - hence how ox tail and po'boys got created and has becomes staples. I can definitely attest it's authentic, however the taste and food quality is a tad lacking. Carne Asada - my friend said... I'm still chewing it when I asked how it was. Definitely low quality piece of beef, however not made any better by the flavor or the way it was cooked. Fried Fish - definitely the star! Slightly overcooked, but still juicy and tender, the fish had an excellent flavor. Warning it can be a lot of work to avoid the bones! (one friend had a tough time, while the other had it eaten in just a few minutes) Papusas - Mediocre. Good enough to fill the craving, however not the best showcase for the famous El Salvadoran dish. Good amount of filling and with ok taste. It could use more salt and be cooked a little crisper on the outside. Make sure to ask for the cabbage topping in case they don't bring it out - it was nice to see that the container for the cabbage had a prep date. Chicharron - Overall a little overcooked, but I feel like this is typically the case every time I've ever had it at any restauraunt. Chewy and overall good flavor. Tortillas - Thick!! And homemade! Yucca - I wish now I had known they had fried yucca, as it's harder to find than one would think in Austin. Make sure to ask for this fried treat, as it's 10x better than French fries!

It was either too busy or just out of the way for me. At my girlfriend's request, she wanted De Nada. We got De Nada. With no reservations and no plans on a mid-Saturday, we were understandably banished to the outdoor tables. It was a hot day, but with the fan blowing and the cold drinks flowing, I thought we'd be alright. We scanned their QR code menu and got our drinks ordered. Me with a Modelo Negra, and my girlfriend with their Beso De Sandia frozen, with Mezcal, Chamoy, watermelon, and lime. We also ordered chips with Queso Blanco and Salsa Verde with our drinks. The queso was brought to us within the minute we ordered. No joke. It was efficient. Capital F fast. With our drinks eventually brought out, we were honestly chilling. My girlfriend previously had a vegan enchilada she really liked that they didn't have this time, so she went for a Camote taco. I went for their Pollo and their Barbacoa. While we waited, we were putting in active work on that queso, which we knew we would feel later. The tacos came out very quickly too. On my Pollo was confit chicken, poblano peppers, cheese, cilantro, and onions. I was hungry at this point of the day, so it wasn't long before I destroyed it. The Barbacoa had beef, habanero salsa, cilantro, and pickled onions. It was also an excellent pick. On both, the blue corn tortillas were thick, added a touch of sweetness, and just made the experience a little more fun. In seeing the pink menus, the overall aesthetic of De Nada, hearing the talk of the town, and just knowing the run around here, I didn't expect De Nada to have cheap tacos. $5.50 for the chicken taco is a little hard to justify, and $7.75 for barbacoa is intense, but everything hit the spot, and we rolled out spending about $50 plus tip between the two of us, so it wasn't anything too out of the ordinary for a lunch. I just do think going in with the expectation that it's those Austin prices, you'll be less shocked down the stretch, and if you're less shocked, you can actually enjoy the great food they throw down here.
