Pupusas (we ordered them to go)

El Sunzal is an amazing place to get your salvadorean food fix. I've ordered Pupusas (Pupusas de queso con loroco (cheese with loroco), revueltas (pork and cheese), and frijol con queso (cheese and beans) they were delicious, the Pupusas are a bit small but they are super tasty and filled with cheese and your choice of filling that you'd like. I also ordered empanas de leche (plantains empanadas filled with custard) they were delicious!!! It's super hard to find a salvadoreña restaurant in Austin that has them, and they have them. It's a plus plus. I have included a picture but keep in mind that I ordered them to go. Highly recommend this restaurant, can't wait to try the rest of the menu :)

Extremely disappointed with this place, staff was rude and not helpful. Ants on table and hair in food, the beans were salty and it came with a mini peace of cheese. The salsa had hair and the chips weren't fresh.

We came here to try pupusas for the first time. One of my coworkers is from El Salvador and he is always raving about them, so we found El Sunzal Restaurant to try them. They did not disappoint! I got the cheese and loroco and the cheese and bean one and I loved them both. I really enjoyed the cabbage that they give you to put on top of them as well. The cabbage kind of had a vinegary taste, so some people might not want to put it on top, but I liked them with or without anyway. I also got the plantain empanada with beans inside. This sounded so weird to me so I wanted to try it. I love all three things so I figured I would like them altogether and I definitely did! Everything was delicious and the service was great. I'd definitely come back to this place!

I have been CRAVING Salvadorian food since moving to Austin and this is the only acceptable spot I've found. Pupusas and platanos are SO GOOD. Almost as good as Grandma's homemade comida back in the day. Definitely worth the trip. Go get you some cultura!

Good selection. Yucca (fired nice and crispy), pupusas were small. Chips and spicy salsa??? And a tamale.

I'm giving it two stars because the yucca was actually really nice. My husband wanted to try Austin's Salvadorian food to compare to back home. We walked in and the service is on par with places in Houston. Same cold blank stare from servers. Makes me feel like home. One huge surprise was that they didn't have coffee. What kind of Salvadorian place doesn't have coffee? That was a first. We tried to order a breakfast plate (which is normal to eat for dinner) and they said they ran out of eggs. Ok....sure. So we ended up ordering yucca, 2 pupusas (one mixed and one cheese), and a tamale. They brought over chips and some super spicy salsa (seriously the lady said "cuidado...picante"). Is this a Mexican restaurant or Salvadorian? I've never been served chips and salsa. So strange. Anyways, our yucca comes out first. It's relatively small with a little bit of meat. But the yucca is fried deliciously. Nice and crispy all the way through. YUM! The pupusas were tiny. Like smaller than my hand. they're supposed to be bigger! I felt jipped! I like the tamale but my husband did not. I really have experienced much better. This place doesn't know what it wants to be. I don't know why everyone is saying it's so great in the comments. Perhaps they've never had real good Salvadorian food. good luck.

This place is AMAZING. We found this place on google and decided to try it. They made date lunch here PERFECT and I left sleepy! (That's a good thing). Some really good authentic food. Friendly staff and a great warm environment.

Mis amores blancos, do you have taste buds? Do you like flavorful, home-cooked authenticity?…read more Also, everyone else for that matter; get in, we're going for pupusas. If you said yes, Pupuseria Usulutes is a chefs kiss. It's a hole in the wall, it was quiet on a Thursday afternoon, but maaaan does that make one feel lucky. I grabbed a breakfast plate, tamale, and some pupusas. OH my lawd, even the beans were delicious (where usually I find that to be the blandest part). Perfectly pickled veggies, a fall of the leaf tamale, and a dayum good pupusa! The flavors were 10/10. For the nitty gritty, the price range is no more than most places now-a-days, and overall cheaper. I only grabbed take-out, but as far as that goes, no notes from me. I'm eager to go back and have a sit down there someday. Eat here, ya'll. It's good~

There's too few pupuserias in Austin! Overall a mediocre food experience, but if you're in the mood…read morefor papusas, not much choice for us here. Met up with friends and one of them loved the authentic vibes. When we're the only non-Hispanic people in a relatively full restaurant it's a good sign! Usually "authentic" when on the cheaper side means that it's cheaper quality but full of flavor, as people with lower incomes know how to make great tasting food that's filling for a lower cost - hence how ox tail and po'boys got created and has becomes staples. I can definitely attest it's authentic, however the taste and food quality is a tad lacking. Carne Asada - my friend said... I'm still chewing it when I asked how it was. Definitely low quality piece of beef, however not made any better by the flavor or the way it was cooked. Fried Fish - definitely the star! Slightly overcooked, but still juicy and tender, the fish had an excellent flavor. Warning it can be a lot of work to avoid the bones! (one friend had a tough time, while the other had it eaten in just a few minutes) Papusas - Mediocre. Good enough to fill the craving, however not the best showcase for the famous El Salvadoran dish. Good amount of filling and with ok taste. It could use more salt and be cooked a little crisper on the outside. Make sure to ask for the cabbage topping in case they don't bring it out - it was nice to see that the container for the cabbage had a prep date. Chicharron - Overall a little overcooked, but I feel like this is typically the case every time I've ever had it at any restauraunt. Chewy and overall good flavor. Tortillas - Thick!! And homemade! Yucca - I wish now I had known they had fried yucca, as it's harder to find than one would think in Austin. Make sure to ask for this fried treat, as it's 10x better than French fries!
