We were crunched for time and hit up Elmyr before our show at neighboring Variety. Our server understood and was on the ball, providing quick, great service. The place is cramped, but it's definitely got its own personality as far as the art, decor and music that let you know you're in Little 5 Points. My husband loved his Thai burrito. I ordered the corn and bean nachos and was bummed to receive those cheap, round chips like you get at a kid's baseball game. The toppings were good, though, and the portions are generous. read more

Elmyr is a staple Mexican restaurant in Atlanta. It is a fantastic local spot, very close to the Variety Playhouse. The servers are fantastic and helpful. Just know it's always busy if there is a show so be understanding. Any margarita that has is a favorite of mine, but my favorite is Spicy. I always start with cheese dip and chips. if you like salsa get it because it is amazing. My favorite tacos are the BBQ, chili lime shirmp, or blackened fish. You get three tacos with black beans and rice on the side. I also love their quesadillas and usually get the grilled chicken or the grilled shrimp. read more

I went here the Saturday just after Christmas with a large group of tree huggers planting trees close to L5P. We arrived right at opening time and surely caught this place off guard. We took over an entire room and the waitress made a very generous exception to the no separate checks rule. Each order went to a separate page to make it full proof for food orders except it didn't. When the food started dripping out of the kitchen, some of the orders were wrong and it took a while to get the food to the right person. Again, we hit them hard and early so waiting almost an hour for food was a small price to pay. I ordered the Miga with chorizo and it was pretty good. Everyone else seemed happy with their food. With so many great Mexican places in town (especially Nuevo Laredo) I wouldn't make a special trip here for food but the next time we try to enhance L5 with free trees, Elmyr will be on my list. read more

Elmyr provided the perfect take out meal for meeting earlier this week. I was impressed with the menu offerings and proximity to my meeting site. Also had been invited to dine in on several occasions, and happy to finally get a chance to sample. The other committee members followed my lead and ordered meals including vegetarian options like the green burrito. Due to the consensus, chips, salsa, and guacamole were provided to share. My entree included three shrimp tacos and rice with black beans. The portions were large and enough to serve as a second meal. Seasoning was ample and nothing needed to be added. Salsa and guacamole were delicious too. Happy I selected this location for takeout. Previously I had walked by the location and was often met with smokers near the front entrance. Hope this has changed as Elmyr is a great Euclid Avenue staple. read more

We are big Elmyr fans. Big. Food always on point and the service when we dine in is excellent. The thing is we're middle age and on a Friday night we want take out. So we called - grant it 6:30pm isn't ideal timing - but it says to call to place and order so we did...and the phone rang and rang and rang. Finally someone picked it up and I was stoked. Except they actually never came on. They just picked it up to stop it from ringing apparently. Upon calling back multiple times it said "your call cannot be completed as dialed". My friends and I decided to check out Elmyr the last time we were in L5P for a Friday night dinner! L5P is pretty easy to find residential street parking, but we also realized later there's also parking behind the building! Seating is "seat yourself" and it was busy, but we were able to find a table quickly, which on a Friday night is HUGE! Much appreciated. Service is a little slow and the restaurant is a little divey, but honestly it fits the vibes of L5P and for a casual Friday night dinner with friends, it's kind of the perfect place. We ordered a couple of house margs and those absolutely get you your money's worth! We also ordered a triple drip combo (salsa, queso, guac) and chips and they were pretty average. The salsa was watery, the queso tasted like ballpark nachos, but the guac was pretty solid. Entrees, we ordered chilaquiles, shrimp quesadilla, and the pad thai burrito. The chilaquiles were missing tortillas or tortilla chips on the bottom, the shrimp quesadilla was simple but solid, and the pad thai burrito was surprisingly delicious, really interesting concept and flavors! We decided to finally come here after it being in our list for so long. There is some parking behind the building but we street parked which was easy enough. When you walk in, it is seat yourself so we found a table quickly. Service was slow but not terrible. We ordered some drinks and the chips for the table. The guac was the most amazing part of the trio! Delicious! The salsa was slightly watery and the queso was a little kid but overall just fine! For my main, I got the shrimp quesadilla which was giant and juicy! Was the food the most amazing thing on the planet? No but to me it gets a 4 because everything was well priced for some decent Mexican food and was fine! I've had better but I've also had better at ridiculous price points. HORRIBLE CUSTOMER SERVICE!!!!!! I did a call in was told it'll be ready in 15 minutes. It's a 5 minute walk so I waited 20 minutes and walked to the establishmen. Was overlooked by both the bartenders for a "WHITE CUSTOMER" and had to stop a random person for assistance. Once being waited on I was told my order wasn't ready. Elmyr combines my two favorite things-dive bars and Tex-Mex- and does it so well that it has become one my new favorite spots in town. A taste of home for this displaced Texan, Elmyr gives off heavy Austin vibes with its grungy interior, metal soundtrack, and greasy spoon Mexican fare that just warms my heart. We stopped in rather late on a Saturday evening and found a perfect high-top for two. After starting out with a couple of pretty good margs, we shared the chips and queso before digging in. From their ample vegetarian options, she went with the tofu quesadilla, whereas I had to try the migas, which were as good as any I've had back home. Came in after a concert at Variety Playhouse. Glad it stays open late it was right on point. Not a fan of the windows being opened and people smoking cigarettes right outside though. Awful experience! Went here around 11pm on a Saturday after seeing a show next door. I expected it to be busy, but my God. After about 40 mins, I asked the server when our food was coming out and their response was, "it's late so everyone is trying to eat here". I totally understand that, but not one server stopped by our table after we placed our order - not even to refill our water. There were other tables around us, and each of the two servers tended to them and seemingly ignored us, despite me waving them down and saying "excuse me" very loudly several times. It honestly felt very discriminatory. Our food was also cold when it arrived (45 mins after ordering), meaning it had been ready for some time. I'm giving it 1 star because the portions are huge, but the food was nothing to rave about. The quesadilla was okay, but the chips looked and tasted like the chips we got during school lunch - the round, stale ones. The lettuce also wasn't shredded. It was like a piece of lettuce you would put on a burger. So that was confusing. Do not recommend. read more

Bartender was extremely rude! We had came for a quick bite to eat and a drink. We sat down and never received menus , or water. We asked the bartender if he could make my sister drink sweet and he said no. So we just stuck to regular house margaritas. Any questions we had about the food or drinks. He said we have white and red. She said what type of white. He said white... Eventually someone else was starting to help us instead. Once we asked for our checks I tipped him $5 even though he did not deserve it! Mind you we still did not receive water. My sister did not tipped. The bartender preceded to ask what did he do to deserve no tip. My sister responded and said he did not deserve it . He got loud and said we were rude and did not tip him in front of the entire restaurant. And said he has to tip out servers . informed bartender I tipped him $5, his service was terrible and he did not help or check on us. He only made my one drink and someone else assisted us. If he feels like that way then can I scratch out the tip I gave just because. He said no you cannot .Then he said we need to leave and proceeded to yell at us to leave the bar. I have worked in the nightlife and bar industry for 5 years. I am all for tipping a server or bartender even when they don't deserve it. But this experience was uncalled for. We only drink wine so ~very~ limited choices - a red or white house wine and they were out of white. lol The one thing that detracts from the "ambiance" is that they play heavy metal music the entire time - at a restaurant that has a Mexican menu? Really did not expect that. Heavy metal gets old pretty fast. A friend joined us and mentioned that they blow through staff at this restaurant pretty quickly. Elmyr is one of the more popular and highly rated restaurant-bars in Little Five Points. This grungy little Mexican joint fits in nicely with the neighborhood and seems to have a strong local following. It's a popular place, located right next door to the historic Variety Playhouse. As thousands of others have done before us, we stopped here before a show to grab a bite to eat. The food at Elmyr is surprisingly good. The restaurant serves a decent variety of tacos, burritos, nachos, chips and salsa (and guacamole and cheese dip), and salads. I think they're best known for their huge burritos - the Green Burrito being one of their famous ones. It's made with spinach, broccoli, green chilies, guac, jalapenos, beans, cheese, and salsa, all wrapped inside a spinach tortilla. Most burritos, quesadillas, and taco and nacho plates cost no more than $6-8 each. A nice value for sure. We tried a few different plates: * Elmyr Nachos - Grilled Steak * Soft Tacos - Grilled Mahi * Quesadilla - Grilled Chicken In general, the ingredients were fresh and flavorful. The Elmyr Nachos were tasty. The crispy flour tortilla chips were smothered in lots of yummy Monterey Jack cheese with thick, appetizing chunks of savory steak, chopped red onion and pickled jalapeno, and topped with chopped green leaf lettuce, salsa fresca, and a dollop of sour cream. Additionally, a ramekin of salsa was served on the side. This is simple and gratifying Mexican comfort food. The Grilled Mahi Soft Tacos were served more like a wrap than individual tacos. By default, two tacos come per order (you have the option to order three) and they are served on flour tortillas. The two tacos combine to form one long "wrap" that is packaged neatly inside tin foil. The foil-wrap presentation coupled with the "creamy Mexicano dressing" (reminds me of tzatziki sauce) actually makes this taco look strikingly similar to a gyro wrap. Other ingredients include lettuce and chopped tomato and red onion. I'm not sure what's in the dressing, but it's delicious. The fish fillet pieces are big and meaty. Satisfying portion size on the Grilled Chicken Quesadilla. Quesadillas can be served on either flour or honey wheat tortillas. We opted for flour. The inside of the quesadilla was filled with plenty of lean strips of chicken plus lots of delectable, melty, stringy cheese. The quesadilla was nicely griddled with a pleasant, slightly crispy exterior. Sides included two ramekins of salsa, a bit of lettuce, and a dollop of sour cream. This is a casual, seat-yourself type place with a lively, alternative crowd. We sat on the elevated side patio which is enclosed all-around. Despite a couple servers seeing us enter and sit down, we were not handed menus and helped until about 15 minutes afterwards. To boot, our table was dirty and we had to clean it off ourselves. This all the while the tables on the patio were 50/50 taken/empty, so it's not like they were slammed. Not sure what the deal was there, but fortunately once we got our orders in, the food came out quick. The staff seems cool and friendly overall. Elmyr doesn't do separate checks. If dining in a group, use Venmo. Free parking is available behind the restaurant. There are spots specially reserved for Elmyr. If none are available, I would parallel park for free along one of the residential streets just outside L5P. Be sure to obey the signs because some of the bordering neighborhood streets may require a permit to park. read more

For starters, Atlanta allows smoking in certain bars - Elmyr being one of them. Newsflash, it's 2018, and this is crazy. I presume certain smokers appreciate this, but basically every other major American city prohibits smoking and life went on. With that being said, perhaps Elmyr isn't entirely to blame for the smoke factor. Nevertheless, that alone would be enough to keep me from returning. Additionally, the food wasn't very good. I got the special of the day: chilaquiles. What I got was 1/2 plate of black beans, 1/4 plate of rice, and 1/4 plate of what they called chilaquiles but in fact was 4 mass-produced small tortilla chips, some thick salsa, and a few pieces of chicken. I would rather give zero stars. My family of 6 were sent away after a waitress explained that no one under 18 was allowed in the premises. We had a teenager with us who was performing at 7 Stages that evening so we had decided on Elmyr for dinner due to its proximity and the fact that 2 of us are vegan and one vegetarian. The waitress was curt and rude and not apologetic in anyway. As we left, looked around for any signage we may have missed that validate the under 18 "rule" but I just couldn't find anything stating her claim. Afterwards, as we are next door at Ali Baba's, I checked the Elmyr website and also their page on Yelp and still could not find anything validation the waitress' claim. The perception I now have is that a waitress is now deciding who she serves and who she doesn't serve at Elmyr. It's always been a place where the cooler-than-you-tattooed-pierced-Eastsider's hung out for cheap grub and a pint. I get it. You have a place to call your own. I was there 22 years ago when Alex opened Elmyr. I ate burritos wrapped by Bill Kelliher of Mastodon when he was supplementing income between shows. But now, I won't ever be back.
