TLDR: So much potential squandered :(
Pros: cool setting in a hotel, classic mid century modern vibes
Cons: least attentive service I've ever experienced, disingenuous bordering on rude staff, and literally no sight of anyone eating while we were there, suggesting a poorly run back of house as well (although we decided to derisk our experience by aborting our dinner plans after a few too many red flags popped up)
More details for those who want it:
My fiancé and I decided to make a reservation here before a walk through downtown and over to the Gulch.
Despite our intention to dine here, we decided to abort our meal after a few too many red flags...
It was the host's first day on the job and she "didn't know what she was doing", a fact she shared with us immediately, as she guided us to a four top. It was a short walk, and somehow two members of the waitstaff almost bumped into us on our way over. Flag number one.
The dining room was decently full when we arrived with a single server covering the entire place. Flag number two.
We sat at our four top and something felt... off. There were maybe 10 other tables in our vicinity, yet no one else had any food on their tables. Flag number three.
A few minutes passed, the single server passing our table a few times, with no acknowledgement of us. Flag number four.
It's a Friday night in Nashville and I hope I have enough self-awareness to realize that I need to take a deep breath and move at a slower pace when I'm not in New York, but something still seems off.
A few more minutes pass, and a runner stops by our table asking us if we're waiting for another two folks to join us. Flag number five.
A few more minutes and the single server stops by. No hello or anything - just another question about the other members of our party that don't exist. At that point I was about to ask for some water and place my drink order but he was gone too soon for any requests. Flag number six.
Then the runner stopped by again and started to pour our water and my fiancé looked at me and had the brilliant suggestion to move to the bar, thinking that we might fare better on the service front there. We asked if the runner minded us moving and if there was a full food menu available. Not a problem and yes - full menu. Phew.
We head over to the bar, take our seats, and the three folks behind the bar notice us but don't quite acknowledge us. Strange, but we're a bit desensitized to the aloofness of the staff by this point. One of the bartenders has a large drink in a rocks cocktail glass that she downs. I tell myself that it's lemonade. Who knows. Flag seven.
A different bartender comes over, takes our order, draft IPA and a house cocktail. I notice him pouring from an already-open can into a beer glass, then opening another can and pouring a bit more into a glass, before bringing it over to me. Draft IPA from a can is a new thing I haven't tried yet, so I asked, and he said that they don't have it on tap. No discussion of that when I ordered it. No warning or offer for me to change my order if I was excited about having something on tap. But, strangest of all, I didn't get a can to myself. It was as if he was following instructions from the GM to make it seem like it was on tap. Otherwise, just give people a can and a glass. The lack of transparency on that front brings to mind other questions about nuance and details that are likely kept from other patrons. No cheddar, sorry, so we substituted American. We ran out of x so here's y, hope you like it! Flag eight, nine, and ten.
At this point, my fiancé made a joke about being on a candid camera show, and it was a bit too real for me. Time to go. Just have to wait for three members of the waitstaff to process another patron's gift card, for someone to see us trying to flag them them down.
I genuinely feel like I was being punked. I'm so happy we called an audible and spent $30 on two drinks over 45 mins instead of trucking through what I can imagine would be a slow, awkward, and even more painful experience. Instead of being frustrated, I left fascinated by the strangeness of the whole thing.
Hopefully ours was an anomalous experience, but based on some other recent reviews, I'm under the impression that this place has an absentee GM or an owner that is underinvesting in the budget required to operate a nice restaurant. I'm empathetic to the challenges of being in the industry after years of working as a bus boy, and working as a server, and despite that, I have trouble being empathetic to a business owner or operator that feels comfortable providing this rough of a product to their patrons.
Here's hoping they figure it out. Beautiful place and I'm sure in the right hands, it could be a fun place to have a slightly upscale dinner! read more
