First of all they serve this amazing hot chicken that is apparently top secret it is not even on the menu to order. You have to ask for it and then you would be told how to order it. Great low key bar off the beaten path, went on a Friday night, great bartenders great drinks great music, great people, great atmosphere. Went back 2 nights later on a Sunday night and had a different bartender who was really arrogant and rude. Saw several people leave in frustration waiting for drinks, we also left as we couldn't get the bartenders attention while he was hitting on two girls at the end of the bar. I agree with many other reviews that list Bar Sovereign's not being on Broadway as a plus. But I didn't leave that impressed by my first visit to Bar Sovereign (it had been on my list for a while, but I'm rarely in SoBro). I had dinner with some friends at Green Pheasant, and we wanted to get a couple of drinks after. Bar Sovereign was a 10-minute walk from the restaurant the right way (away from Broadway). None of us had ever tried it out, so we made our way over there. The bar is a bit hidden (just a metal plaque next to the door lets you know you've arrived at the right place). It's small and long. I liked the decor - definitely more understated that many places in Nashville now, but still very cool. The bar menu had five cocktails on it, so all but one of us ordered classic cocktails that weren't listed on the menu (G&T, Boulevardier, Manhattan). My friend did like the summery tequila cocktail option they had on the menu. No prices on the cocktail menu, which is kind of a pet peeve of mine. I like to know if I've found a secret place where a classic cocktail is going to be $8 or if I'm at another Nashville bar where a cocktail is $13-16. The options for beer and wine were limited, uninspired/ing. I thought I was going to go beer or wine for my second drink, but nothing sounded great, so I went with a second cocktail. The service was pretty good. There were three bartenders for the whole bar on a Saturday night, but they managed to be pretty quick and notice when you finished a drink even if they weren't very friendly. The bar is long and narrow, so there's not a ton of seating. The four of us ended up taking four seats at the bar, since all other seating was taken. It's definitely not a large bar and not a place I'd go with a big group. Definitely the kind of bar where you might have to stand with your cocktail and stand awkwardly over someone's shoulder who's seated at the bar to order a drink. On Saturday night, there was a DJ and it was definitely loud (my voice doesn't carry well so I was definitely shouting at my friend so she could hear me), but the DJ was fun and it definitely gave the bar a different vibe than your downtown/Honkytonk experience (for those tourists that are staying in the area but want to try something else). Since the four of us all live in Nashville (one local, and three people that have lived in Nashville for 3-10 years) and none of us had ever been, I can't say whether this is more of a local spot or a bar for tourists that want to get off the beaten path. It has been around for several years and is pretty close to many SoBro area restaurants, so it could be a local spot that just none of us had been to or heard much about. Not a bad bar, but definitely not a bar I'd go out of my way to go to. If you're eating in the area or are in the area for some other reason (even at Ascend, for example), it's a good place for a classic cocktail or some beer/wine. But it didn't stand out to me as anything more than an average bar. read more

This is a pretty chill bar that's off Broadway and a 10 minute walk out of the main downtown strip. I almost missed the bar because it was so unassuming as the only signage is a small one next to the door. They have a DJ who plays pretty good music. My first drink was the B.S. ($12) which kind of tastes like a paper plane with the whiskey and lemon. My second drink was the Boondoggle ($12) which was more spirit forward and also pretty good. The service wasn't great and it took a while for the bartenders to check up on me and also to make my drinks and it wasn't super busy either. This was a great bar tucked away in a developing area of Nashville. Yelp saved the day after we realized we were way too early for our dinner reservation so we found this spot to have a pre-dinner cocktail. It was early still so we were the first to kick off the bar night. They have a great menu of cocktails - our crew each ordered something different so I got to try a sip of everything. I got their version of an old fashioned with a rye whiskey. Superb and well balanced. The B.S. is great too. The bar menu for light bites was delish. We ordered fried pickles to share. They're lightly battered pickle chips with ranch dipping sauce. I devoured most of them. The space itself is fun and funky with random decor, intimate lighting, and cozy nooks for sitting. I do not agree with other reviews saying the bartenders are cold or snooty to non-locals or regulars. I heard them being helpful and friendly to all guests- even obvious tourists. I thought the cocktail menu could have been a bit longer. They have a lot of neat and interesting liquor and mixers- I bet they can make a large amount of cocktails but there menu was a bit limited to 1-2 cocktails per liquor. If you're lucky enough to grab a seat at the bar and it's not too busy, the bartenders are willing to listen to what you like and don't like and make recommendations based on taste. They also have a secret ramen bar located in the back of the bar. It is completely separate (different tabs, you have to go order from the ramen window) but you can sit and eat in the bar. The ramen was great- but save room for the yuzu cheesecake. Wow. I was blown away. I heard about this place from the friend of a friend. I probably shouldn't be writing this review because part of its charm is the obscurity of the location which has led to few people knowing about such a unique bar with a eye popping decor. The lights are dimmed just enough to make it a perfect first date spot....if you make it early. The bartenders definitely add to the charm of the place. On this particular night I had the pleasure of talking to Christina. She informed me that although it's slow until around 930 or 10pm once the DJ comes the atmosphere does a 180. Talking to her while listening to a playlist of Motown music created a comfort you can not find at most bars around Nashville. I also got to try Fernet. Apparently peoples opinions are split on this liquor. For 7 dollars you get a shot of Fernet and a PBR. I loved the Fernet. It was light and aromatic and went down really smooth with a very slight bite in the aftertaste. Easily one of the better shots I've had in a while. There is a debate as to whether or not it's a good liquor, which is silly. It most obviously is a great liquor to take a shot of. All in all a great bar that no one should come to before 10pm( so I can enjoy myself). And everyone should show up after 1030pm. read more

I've been to Bar Sovereign twice on nights that were a bit... unstructured but I've always had a good time here and enjoy their cocktails. They do border on more of a experimental side if you are ordering off the menu, and I've found that I just like simpler drinks. The great thing about Bar Sovereign is that they make custom drinks and do a great job of creating something that you'd like so there's something for everyone. And yes, you can be super lame and just get a beer if you want. I love that they have a speakeasy vibe off the main drag of downtown (it's easy to miss them) and the interior is just relaxed and fun but still nice and well designed/decorated.
