My son went to purchase 4 donuts this morning while I was standing in line at another vendor( farmers market) After standing in line for 15 minute my son approached the truck with a rolled up $20 bill. As he handed it to Danny Tassone, Danny answered back, how would you like it if handed you all of your change back this way! Don't be a jerk Danny. He's a kid and that's not cool. YOU are not cool for treating my son that way. Shame on you Danny Tassone! It undermines your entire business and now I understand that your customer, no matter what age, doesn't matter. If that doesn't attract your attention, the smell of fresh donuts wafting across the booths will. Founded in 2010, these are the classic, old-fashioned cake donuts of yesteryear, hence the name. You'll probably never find out how good most of their flavors are. The three Saturdays we've arrived within two hours of their opening, Ellie's only had the cinnamon sugar variety remaining. It is what it is. But even that style, the most basic of donuts, is exemplary. You'll notice the quality. Ellie's may not make my top five donuts in Middle Tennessee (unless I can get my hands on that elusive maple), but they're tasty, nonetheless. How have I not reviewed yet? These are the best doughnuts in Tennessee. They are hot and FRESH. We always make a point to get them when we see the truck but we recently went out of our way to support with all that's going on in the world right now. We ordered a dozen to keep at home (ended up with 16 bc the owner is so sweet and always gives us extra for the road) and they only lasted 2 days... oops. So delicious. We were in Franklin for a long weekend and arrived at the farmers market around 8:30am. The line for Ellie's Doughnuts was only about five folks long so we jumped in. We love that they only make the old fashioned cake doughnuts and that they were very reasonably priced. We got a half dozen, maple, cinnamon sugar, chocolate and plain. We wolfed down two doughnuts each sitting in the shade watching the line getting longer and longer. Very happy! Some of the doughnuts were still warm as we pulled them out of the bag. After we had our doughnuts from Ellie's we wandered into the Factory and saw the doughnuts at a shop there cost $4.50 each. Sorry folks, no doughnut is worth $4.50. Do yourself a favor and get some of Ellie's Doughnuts and you will be glad you did. PS-we ate the last two doughnuts the next morning in our hotel room and they tasted just as good if not better the next day! read more

Well, hello there. This was a welcome surprise from my time at the FFM. As I wandered the crowd and contemplated which fancy soaps I was going to buy (all of them; this is becoming an issue), I kept seeing all these people walking around with the donuts that should have been mine. If you've read my reviews for any amount of time, you know that this was a situation I couldn't just let be. I had to find the source of these donuts and have them all. What can I say? I'm an only child. I found a small hut churning out delectable baked goods at a fever pitch. Yes. Yes, this would do. I waited in line, made my way to the front and... ?? The demeanor of the person taking orders could be described as disinterested at best, rude at worst. I'd just seen him smiley and chatty with the patrons before me. I hadn't seen him receive bad news in the time in between me and them. But, without a doubt, my reception was much much cooler. Ordinarily, this would have been enough for me to get out of line, leave and never return. But, it was breakfast time, I was hungry and I wanted donuts. It is the reason why I can't rate this business any higher than four stars, however. And it's too bad for the snafu at the counter because the product is fantastic! I'm a fan of the donut stand at the Nashville Farmer's Market as well... but these... these donuts took me to a new dimension of fat kid glee. I'm sure that my sugar levels were in the danger zone for hours after this snack but it was a risk I had to take. The chocolate cake and pumpkin cinnamon donuts were symphonies of fried wonder. With every bite I was more and more in disbelief as to what I was eating. In fact, I had to sit down. I kid you not, I looked for seating because I was weak in the knees from these donuts. I washed them down with a nicely-spiced hot apple cider (appropriate for mid-autumn) and made sure that I'd stay jittery for the foreseeable future. The donuts are every bit as good as you want them to be. The food prep area is immaculate. The staff is about as nice as you can get. Absolutely worth the wait! $13 for a dozen and make sure you have cash, if not there's an ATM inside the market. I made the rookie mistake of not bringing cash and the staff were so friendly and pointed me in the direction of the ATM and didn't make me wait in line a second time when I came back with cash. Old fashioned doughnuts are my favorite kind and Ellie's did not disappoint. I ordered one of each flavor they had that day, Strawberry Shortcake, The Big Apple, Chocolate Covered Original and Original Cinnamon Sugar. All were delicious! The Strawberry Shortcake tasted so fresh and not artificial whatsoever like you would get at a donut chain. I loved the festive Fourth of July touch to the Chocolate Covered Original and I couldn't stop eating the Original Cinnamon Sugar. The Franklin Farmer's Market opens at 8am so get there as early as you can or shortly after. Will definitely be returning when visiting Franklin! read more

Firstly, the owners of this place are the absolute best people. They are so kind and so personable. They really care about their customers. Their donuts are one of my favorite things in this entire world! Every chance I get to go to the farmers market and pick up their donuts, I'm there. Their flavors and dough are very unique. They've worked hard on their recipes and the way they are made with such love really makes a difference. Fresh hot cake donuts from Danny's family recipe. Danny's family efficiently turns out delicious cake donuts right there on the spot at the Franklin Farmers Market on Saturdays. You can buy just one or two dozen for those you love. The serendipitous joy is that come Fall, Danny cycles through a variety of flavors: pumpkin, blueberry maple glazed (my personal favorite), chocolate glazed, and cinnamon sugar. I highly recommend eating one of these (try to do it slowly) at the market, perched on a bench, watching people on a cool Fall morning with a bracing cup of coffee. Simple but oh so good. read more

Where do I begin? Ellie's Doughnuts are my favorite doughnuts, period. I have never found doughnuts that compare, nor have I found any that are even similar in texture/quality. They are a fluffy cake variety of doughnut; not the dense, stiff cake doughnuts you find at almost any other doughnut shop. It is a forty minute drive for us, and we will often make the drive solely for the doughnuts. My wife grew up in San Diego, and in her words, the original cinnamon & sugar doughnut is "like a cake doughnut and a churro had a delicious, fluffy baby" and I would have to agree with her. In addition to the delicious go-to original cinnamon & sugar, they always feature two or three other varieties (including a vegan doughnut, which are good even if you're not vegan, though not as good as their non-vegan ones) which change each week. My personal favorites are their "Blueberry Pancake" and "Strawberry Shortcake", but they also have pumpkin doughnuts in the fall and winter (and possibly summer, too, but I don't remember seeing them). Their "Big Apple" would have to be a close third in my list. Here are some of the specialty flavors that I can remember: Glazed original Chocolate covered original Chocolate covered chocolate Strawberry covered chocolate Chocolate covered strawberry Apple cider Pumpkin cinnamon & sugar Glazed pumpkin Blueberry Pancake Strawberry shortcake Strawberry covered strawberry I'm sure I'm forgetting some. If you want any of the special variety, you had best show up early, or they will sell out of them! They are very popular. Danny (the owner/operator) is a heck of a nice guy (as well as his family who also help operate the food truck), the doughnuts are VERY reasonably priced (I would easily justify paying more for them), and the flavor is superb. I highly recommend warming leftover original cinnamon & sugar in the microwave for approximately 10 seconds before eating; they are AMAZING warm. Thanks, Danny & Co.!
