James is a pleasure to work with (so easy going and professional) and he is always around working and managing during the project. For the work A Better Craft did for my project - see below. WORK COMPLETED: Painted my unfinished basement from top to bottom (including painting and tacking up messy wires and finding a way to conceal them), smoothed over an uneven concrete basement floor, patched up parts of the ceiling where you could see the rafters, installed recessed lights and moved electrical outlets, built a closet with doors that his team constructed from a picture I showed them, patched up and painted my cracking concrete steps in the front and back of my house, installed a ceiling fan in my bedroom, hung heavy gym wall mirrors on the concrete walls in my basement, eliminated my rodent issue by adding wood siding under my steps and deck and had my iron gate repaired in front of my home. James is a talented painter and he knows his team well in addition to knowing all the local hardware, paint, and electrical stores which helps with product and pricing. You will enjoy working with A Better Craft!

We did a gut…read morerenovation of bathroom and kitchen, sanded and stained floors, built out two closets (wall work), did some large demolition, and did electrical work such as adding fixtures. Hiring a contractor is like getting married - you are going to be spending a lot of time with the person, so trust and communication are key. I met three contractors at my apartment to get an idea of price and their approach to the work. One contractor came recommended by someone in the building, but when he told me that he recommended scaling back part of my bathroom renovation to make the project easier, it didn't sit well with me. If the contractor is saying "No" at the beginning, imagine how that is going to sound one month into the project. One contractor seemed great in person, had a lot of ideas, sent me a detailed quote, and then was very hard to reach for weeks, explaining that he was doing a lot of traveling. I believed him, but I am on my phone all the time, and I wanted someone more accessible. Although I was tempted to go with the second person, I was a little weary about the communication issue. A friend who works in real estate told me that is normal with contractors, that you have to bug them to get a response. I believed him until I spoke with Jeff, who is the owner of Prime Renovations. He met me on time, replied to my emails and phone calls quickly, and had a lot of ideas for make my renovation happen. There were a number of pros to choosing Prime Renovations: - Communication: This is huge, Jeff is available by email and phone all the time. This is so important when you are dealing with all the stress of a renovation. - Quality: Very high. I am a little shocked when I look around my apartment. It looks so nice that my wife and I can't believe that we live here. This also meant that many little things were done that make the project look high end. - Subcontractors (flooring, painting, electrical, plumbing): These guys were excellent. When we had an issue or wanted to change things, such as the location of our chandelier, moving a ceiling fan, dealing with a problem dishwasher, etc., Jeff was quick to deal with it. - Integrity. I don't use this word lightly. I am a psychiatrist and spend all day trying to help people understand their motivations. I believe that Jeff is an honestly good person who would not cheat a client. Although renovation is inevitably stressful, I trusted him with my home. As a result, we love living in our renovated apartment. I am thankful I chose to work with Jeff and Prime Renovations. ONE YEAR UPDATE: The quality still looks great. We had an issue with the W/D and Jeff came out himself to look at it and then sent the plumber, who came for free. Outstanding guarantee. Also, my father is an engineer and home builder outside of the city and he specializes in spotting mistakes and errors in construction. He stayed with me for a few days and spontaneously said that the construction was very well done, especially the small details. Huge compliment and it speaks to the quality of my renovation. I love my apartment post renovation.

His guys came in in the morning, measured the area, came back within an hour and put up the wall up before the end of the day. I happily offered to write a glowing review because Jonathan was responsive, polite, and very easy to work with. I almost never write reviews, but I had to make it a point to do so because they really did a great job. The wall looks amazing, it was exactly what we needed, when we needed it, and within our budget. The nature of NYC forces you to be very assertive and clear about all details when you're hiring someone for a job, because workers can be sneaky, they can throw in costs you weren't prepared for, and they can't always be reliable in timing/delivery. There were no issues whatsoever. It was one of the only headache-free experiences I've had dealing with an NYC-based service ever, and I highly recommend these guys to do your next wall.

We had a great experience with Genny. We hired rock star renovation to a big project on our house…read more We renovated our kitchen, living room, bathroom, 3 bedrooms and hallway. Majority of the work was gutting and a complete rebuild. Our end result was above our expectation. We first renovated our basement with another contractor and ended up very dissapointed. We were then given a recommendation to Rock Star and then had Genny in our house the next day after calling her. She came into the house with an enthusiastic attitude and a lot of great ideas to add on to what we were already planning. She lead us to add parts to the project that we never would have surmised yet she always was very mindful of our budget. I could tell she was trying to make this a great renovation but was always cognizant of not pushing us beyond what we could afford. She really treated this project like it was her own house and I could see the excitement she held with approaching each part. Our kitchen involved a complete gut and we turned a closed concept into an open. She was able to put in a huge island that can now double as a ping pong table. One idea she added to the kitchen was to put heated floors (which we are loving during this particularly record breaking cold winter). All the work is high quality. Our living room floor was sanded and stained to a nice grey tone. Genny's carpenter put in a custom designed railing that looks amazing. Our bathroom is the pinnacle aspect of the project. It was gutted. Genny enlarged the bathroom. This allowed us to go from only a shower/tub to having a whirlpool tub and a walk-in shower. The painting around the house was all done with Benjamin Moore paint and looks wonderful. She took out our window/wall unit air conditioner and gave us slimline HVAC system so we now can heat/cool rooms separately. One of the more unique but eye catching part of our project was making what some would label as "catification". She put a catwalk on our living room wall that anyone that sees it first compliments it as a great looking shelf, but then are impressed when we tell them it is a catwalk. It runs the length of the wall with steps that lead up to it. She even added cove lighting to it for a little extra pizzaz. One of her coolest ideas was adding a seperate entrance to our bedroom for the cats. This allows us to keep our bedroom door closed when we have guests or when we want to just turn the air conditioner on in the bedroom and still allow our cats to come and go without annoying us to open the door. Another one of her great ideas was putting in a skylight that opens electronically and gives us amazing amount of natural light. All in all we are incredibly happy with the end result. We enjoyed working with Genny and her crew. They were respectful of the neighbors and our time. The quality is superb. I would hire her again in a heart beat for any future projects and would recommend her highly to anyone who wants a great contractor who always seems to enjoy what she is doing.
