Finally tried out ELISA Steak for a special occasion! I've heard many good things about ELISA and I couldn't wait to see how it pairs up to other iconic steakhouses in the city (i.e., Gotham). TLDR: Sides are delicious, steak was okay, service was decent.
The waiter started us off with some bread, which was a combination of baguette and sourdough. Baguette was just a bit too tough for me but the sourdough was perfect! I also got a drink to start -- Spring in Toki-yo ($17), which was not overly sweet and had a nice hint of yuzu.
We ordered the beef carpaccio ($25) to start. It had quite an overwhelming cheese taste, and you can taste the truffle towards the end of each bite. The slightly sweet sauce was delicious and added to the depth of the dish.
For our main steak, we ordered their special -- boneless rib eye priced at $95 (~14oz if I remember correctly). They recommended to have it cooked medium and was perfect! Steak was juicy and had the right amount of fat on the sides. There wasn't large bits of tendon that made it hard to chew, and it was easy to slice into small bites. However, I find it slightly too salty for my personal liking.
We also ordered some sides -- mac & cheese ($17), brussels sprouts ($13), and mushrooms ($15). Out of the 3, I would say that the mushrooms surprised me the most. At first taste, I noticed that there was a hint of Asian-infused cooking, and turns out they added baby shrimps into it (most likely to enhance the flavour of the mushrooms). Super well done!
The mac and cheese was created using large tortellini shells with a nice cheese crust on top. I felt that the truffle was there for mostly decoration -- unless you had a bite with the truffle, it didn't really add much to the dish.
Lastly, I find that vegetables are usually a hit or miss at these restaurants. At ELISA, it was definitely a miss for me. The brussels sprouts had such a strong vinegar taste to the point where it tasted super sour and I didn't enjoy it. It was cooked well and not overly hard though. The asparagus and broccolini that came with the steak was also okay; however, you can taste that the broccolini was old.
I would say it was a nice experience, but I don't know if I would be returning. Nothing in particular really blew me away -- everything was standard (if not a bit lower) for its price point. The sides are quite pricy for their portion as well and honestly feels like I could find similar dishes elsewhere for a fraction of the price. I think it's worth to try it at least once though. read more
