Finally got to try this wine bar because it has always been so busy and packed when i tried in the past We arrived at shortly after it opened at 4:05pm and there was already a short lineup. Service was impeccable and the wine selection and the wine knowledge of the staff was amazing we ordered the cheese board and meat and pickles charcuterie board and both had great variety it was unfortunate that we couldnt get a table inside the restaurant to try the kitchen items recommended as a great spot for a wine with friends outdoor with great weather

Wanted to love this place but sadly did not. Cute neighborhood bar but very, very small. We got there at 5pm on a weekday and left our names before venturing off to another restaurant nearby (8th in line). We didn't get a text back until 7pm. At that point we made our way back. Restaurant itself is quite charming. Appreciated the complimentary popcorn. We got a glass of red each (the Markus was very nice) and liked the logo on the glasses. We got the charcuterie as a little snack and found it very underwhelming and mediocre for the price point. Getting to the washroom is a little maze and requires a fob.

I came on a Tuesday night, right after work and arrived at 4:30pm. They were offering their "happy hour" from 4-5pm and it was a fun menu. I know their venue is a little bit small, but I had such a fantastic time with me and my friend on the wine and their food menu. I dove right into the place with a half carafe of their red wine for the night. Their house red wine is a bottle of Cerejeiras, from Portugal and it was a very comfy red. I could literally sit in front of the TV and finish this bottle easily. And when I saw down, I was offered a small plate of popcorn to start off the night. It was perfect and a great entry snack while having some wine. It felt like I have arrived home. I look around the venue for a bit, and then looked at their offering. I loved the little menu, stamped and printed on a simple piece of paper. I heard so much about their house made bread with cultured butter, I had to order some to start off my night. Sitting right at bar, I kept seeing how busy they were and all the action of their tsuedo open kitchen. It is small, but a very strong one. You can see Chef Jorge going at it all night as he passes the food to the servers and the swift movement of him moving about. As I waited, I smelt the bread coming from the oven, with a good simple browning of the edges and a very soft, fluffy inside of each slice. I ate the first slice with some butter, and the emmaculate saltiness and savoury of the butter was amazing. It was creamy and perfectly doused with salt all over the plate. Simple but delicious. 4/5 Waiting for my friend arrived, I went ahead and ordered the pil pil prawns with smoked chili oil and garlic crunch. Once my friend had arrived and I poured him a glass of the red, we dove right into the shirmp. It was plated like a small mountain, and the chili oil looking like a bright red snow as it dripped down. I cut the prawn and smelled the smokiness of the chili oil, amazing. The perfectly cooked prawn was bouncy but yet not hard. And the chili oil is just carrying the whole plate. I wish I had some more of that bread to dip into that chili oil. 5/5 We then ordered their variation of the bagna cauda with seasonal veggies. Very simple but divine. Their Bagna cauda tasted like a variation of the chili oil, but made it creamy and a hint of paprika. Their seasonal veggies were endives, white beets and some brocolini. Love how the bagna cauda mixed well with the bitterness of each veggie. A good plate, but as the season changes, I hope their bagna cauda changes to match the veggies. 4/5 The last plate blew me away, the Ricotta Gnocchi is just spectacular. I love how each gnocchi is extremely pillowy and their butter base, confit garlic and lemon was the perfect cut to the flavours of the abundence snow of ricotta cheese on top. Would 100% recommend this gnocchi. 6/5 I had a fantastic visit and I love this place a lot. Will be adding this as a must visit spot in Vancouver and an amazing time was spent here. Thank you Tom and the staff here. Such a good little snack bar~!!

Review Highlights - Dear Gus Snack Bar

Tried a few things from their menu (pork belly, charcuterie board, house bread) and all were good - it's a place to go for drinks and a nibble, not necessarily a full meal.

The servers that brought out hors d'oeuvres were very friendly, professional, and attentive. The bartender was great as well. She worked efficiently and also checked that my drink was to my liking and even offered to add more simple syrup if needed it. I throughly enjoyed both of my mocktails; blush hour and another drink that isn't normally on their menu that had ginger. My favorite hors d'oeuvre was hands down the scallop. It was perfectly cooked and seasoned. We were offered a 5 course meal, thai soup was amazing. It had a kick to it thay clung to your throat but kept you wanting to coming back for more Chicken and waffles was too battered and salty for me, although I liked the pickled purple cabbage that came with it. The sorbet oalate cleansers was refreshing I had asked for my steak to come really rare and found it to be a bit overcooked. The texture seemed slightly different too. I would have enjoyed this more if there was a bit more sauce. Thr mashed potatoes were delicious and so were the Brussel sprouts and garlic carrots. Dessert was chocolate mint pot de creme. I normally don't like pot de creme but I will say that theirs was pretty decent.

Good wine list! Hubby switched to a negroni that he liked and I had more wine but this time late night happy hour had started which was a nice treat! We ordered the Dolce de leche dessert and the kitchen was lovely and gave us both desserts on the menu as a bday treat. The rice dessert was incredible - it was like sticky toffee pudding but with a rice base. The caramel sauce was killer! It blew the dolce dessert outta the water. The service was also kind and attentive! The music choices were odd for our night, I love vinyl and collect it myself but just wasn't feeling the vibes that evening, it was a lot of house style music and the same beat over and over with no lyrics. Some folks loved it tho and had asked to move closer to the speaker so to each is own. The tables are also really close to your neighbor so you catch quite abit of convo around you and it's a touch distracting especially when it starts to get little loud as the room is small. It was fun to people watch though.

Ordering style was interesting, after we ordered our small plates we were ready to select our main courses but the staff just took our menu away and we had to ask another server to put in our main entrees. I understand they were busy so they may have assumed we were done ordering but it was a bit of an off putting experience. Overall food was good, the bread was divine. The highlight item for us was the tuna tar tar with chinese donuts, the chili crips totally brought the dish together. Everything else was pretty good, but wasn't amazing as I hoped. The citrus notes in the canton noodles threw me off and the chicken liver mochi balls felt more like a dessert dish than an appetizer for some reason. Highlight was having the DJ also be one of the servers!! Love the vibes that Bar gobo had, definitely a good date spot. Will have to come try it out again next season.

We sat at the bar and enjoyed chatting with Taku and watching him prepare drinks. They have an impressive cocktail list. The bar stools didn't have a backrest so it was a bit uncomfortable after awhile, I would've preferred sitting at a table. We started off with the June brioche and it was pillowy soft. Foie gras was their feature of the evening and although it was delicious, we were told it was cooked, but it was prepared as a cold dish. The crispy eggplant with tomato base was tasty. The mussels were incredibly fresh, topped with petite frites. Pasta for Rachel is named after the chef's wife and it was rich and addicting with potato filling. The only dish I didn't care for was the Fraser Valley chicken as it was a bit dry. I normally don't care for chocolate mousse but really enjoyed this one. They even added a candle for my birthday and gave me a mini ice cream cone.

The sauce that it came with was so delicious that I literally drank it all up. It would have been perfect if they made a soup version of it. The Hamachi Crudo was also delicious. It was very fresh and tasty. The Frog Legs were surprisingly really good. They were deep fried and tossed in what I would consider to be a sweet chili sauce. The Beef Tartare and the Striploin didn't have much flavor. We upgraded the fries that came with the Striploin to truffle fries for $20. The additional $20 was a bit ridiculous, but it was nice to try. They had tons of truffle in the dip. The Trout Rilette surprised me by how good it was. It was packed with flavor and was slightly smoky. I enjoyed the Crispy Eggplant, although it was on the smaller side. It got soggy quickly, so I recommend eating it quickly. The Brussel Sprout Salade was served slightly warm. I liked the slight acidity of the dish. The Mussels were unique. The petite fries were slightly spicy. The sauce was good but could have used a touch more flavor. The Pasta for Rachel was disappointing. It didn't have much flavor. However, we really liked the Butternut squash and truffle ravioli. It was slightly sweet. I would have much preferred a double portion of this, instead of getting the Pasta for Rachel. The customer service was really great. The staff checked up on us and took the time to explain their menu. I found the restaurant to be a bit too dark for my preferences, but it was still acceptable. 4.5 stars
