While I've come to realize that Canadian wines may not be my thing (a little too dry for my liking), a great atmosphere sure can make up for it. After a meal at Ask for Luigi, we were hoping to do a little tasting flight over at Vancouver Urban Winery. They do have food options as well, but we opted for the bar to taste and did end up ordering a little dish of focaccia. What stood out about this place was the atmosphere and service! The low lighting and barrels in the dining room make for an intimate and romantic spot that's still good for groups of friends or larger parties alike. The bartender was so incredibly sweet and friendly. I swear her voice was like ASMR. She even gave us complimentary glasses of champagne for celebrating our honeymoon. The wine itself did surprise me. Even if not what I'd usually choose, it was better than the wine we'd tasted previously from similar regions and I appreciated getting a solid taste for what Canadian wine has to offer. Wine flights = love. Visited Vancouver Urban Winery after a day of brewery hopping. I love beer, but after a day filled with hops - grapes were such a welcome treat! From the moment you walk in this location is spectacular. You are greeted by wine barrels, comfortable seating and high ceilings that have you in awe of this space. The winery is located in the Settlement Building, which is home to this spot, as well as a delicious kitchen and brewery, too! Since this review is strictly for wine - I will stick to that. I enjoyed a lovely wine flight, great service and awesome company. The wine was lovely, my favorite being the rosé. My friend and I stopped here on a Saturday afternoon for wine flights. We ended up drinking two flights (five 1 ounce pours per flight ). The wine flights are certain the way to go to be able to discover new wines that are local. The wines are preselected for the flight. There are options on the flights as you can choose from just reds, whites and reds, white, red and rose, all whites, and a premium selection of whites and reds. My first wine flight was Seeing red. Our server explained that it is best to drink from left to right and try each one first. My favorite was Steamboat Pinotage/Pinot Noir '15. My taste buds were dancing with this dry red. My second flight was the Vancouver Urban Winery flight. The flight is a mixture of red, rose, and white and of course all were Urban Winery's own wine. My favorite from that flight was the Vancouver Winery Reliance '15 (merlot). There was food for purchase but we didn't partake since we had a late lunch. However, I will say that the food looked quite delicious from the few plates I did see. read more

We were near the area so we decided to try some wine after dinner! I would've tried their dishes if I wasn't so full from dinner. The atmosphere inside the shop was so cute. The lighting was dim, but made for an intimate conversation. My two friends aren't huge wine fans so they got the white & pink flight which had a selection of white wines and rose. I went for the sommeliers choice, which had two whites, a rose, and two reds. My favorite was probably the rose - the clos du soleil rose. The wines would've definitely paired well with a charcuterie board! My only concern was that we walked to the winery late at night and the area was a little sketchy especially at night. If you read my Belgard Kitchen review, then you already know how much I love The Settlement Building + Vancouver Urban Winery. I'll keep this short and sweet since I went into detail in my other review, but let me just start by saying that they have 34 different wines on tap. Yup. 34. I mean, can your wine get any more fresh? Yes, probably, but that's besides the point. You can also get wine flights to sample and find your favourite one. You can buy bottles of their wine in-store and enjoy that bad boy at home or bring it to your next party to share (if that's your thing). As a person who is keen for design and detail, I love the labels and branding that the winery uses for their bottles - reminds me of a fancy chalkboard. I'm into it. Pair any of these wines with the food from Belgard and you have yourself a great evening out. Plus, the building alone is reason to visit. SO COOL. Ceviche, meatballs, gnocchi and charcuterie board were really good, great flavors and fresh . Service: very good, unpretentious, attentive and fairly knowledgable about wines. I love all the locally sourced wine and food. The vibe is hip, cool and upbeat. The building itself is pretty cool. One star knocked of because of the buildings location, very sketch about a block away, a large tent city looms from a distance. Ok... so this is more than "just ok"... but I can't say I'm truly a "fan"... so 3.5 stars. We were out being tourists, and I saw the reviews for this place and knew we had to try it, and it seemed like it was close to Gastown. (It's less a mile from the edge of Gastown.) Plus, I love wine tastings and trying new wines so I figured this would be a good place to try some "local" wines.... and it was. The wines are "on tap".... just like a brewery. And there's lots to choose from. I didn't count, but I figure probably over 30 different wines to choose from. We did a white wine flight and a red wine flight... each flight had 5 samples that consisted of 2oz pours each. The wines were interesting but nothing jumped out at me and made me say "Oh my gosh... I could drink you all night." They also offer a nice appetizer menu and a full menu because they are a restaurant as well. We ordered the charcuterie plate and it was pretty darn awesome. So, if you're looking for a place to meet up with friends, I'd say this is a good spot. The locals probably know the ins and outs of how to get here, but as tourists... I'd recommend taking a taxi to and from this place when it's dark. It's in an industrial part of the city which is neat, but it's very close to some not-so-nice parts of town. read more

I'm sorry, I wasn't that much of a fan of Vancity's urban winery. I was stoked to try this place out, but the whole experience left me wanting more. Here's why: Let's start with service. Our server was fabulous, and being at the bar seating was so great! I highly recommend it because you get to chat with all of the servers and get a "front of the house" feel. I have all good things to say about our wonderful service experience. We didn't have reservations when we walked in on a Friday night, but we only had to wait maybe 10-15 minutes to be seated. I forget our sweet server's name, but he was so attentive and provided a 5 star experience. However, that was probably the best part about the entire thing. We already ate dinner beforehand, so we were mainly excited for the wine! I mean, they are an urban winery...so I honestly didn't expect the focus to be on anything else like the beer and food that they offer. I got a flight of red, white and rose even though my personal preferences are reds. I love me some rose's and dry whites. I worked in the industry for a few years, so I am all about that diverse full-on experience! I thought that the pours weren't as generous as what most wine tasting places offer. However, the presentation with the flight racks are great. The wines themselves left us feeling unsatisfied. I only enjoyed one of the reds which wasn't even on the tasting menu, that our server so generously let us taste out of the kindness of his heart! I did enjoy the variety of flavor profiles of each wine: I distinctly remember a buttery white vs a crisp/floral/honeysuckle white (sauv blanc blend). I can definitely appreciate that, but none of the wines in the flights wow'd me. If you're a huge wino, I wouldn't say that I would recommend this place for your tasting desires. I think I just assumed that an "urban winery" would be a winery with the full wine geek/tasting experience...just in an urban setting. I was disappointed because the PNW has so much yummy wine with Walla Walla and Columbia Valley to their name. But this spot is definitely better at other components like aesthetics and service. Yes, the place is beautifully decorated so you feel like you're in a modern-day Gothic hipster home, and the aesthetics are all pretty fire. ALSO how heavy is that thick door at the entrance! So this establishment is really 3 places in one (wine = Vancouver Urban, beer = Postmark Brewing, food = Belgard Kitchen), all in the same space. Kind of silly having 3 different entries. This review is about the wine side of things. As with my other reviews, the place is quite classy, and they did the whole "converted old warehouse" theme quite well. Staff are friendly, and the place definitely impresses. My friend Ant F. tried the wine taster (5 glasses) while I had a flight of beer. Suddenly he stops and scowls. Our conversation stops abruptly. What's wrong? One of the wines (Noble Ridge Chardonnay 2013) is awful. He passes the glass to my other friend. She takes a sip and immediately spits it out with a frown. I take a sip and wow, it's um, sour and kind of tastes like there's a bit of bleach in there. Is it a bad one? Maybe it's supposed to taste like this? We flag down our waitress (took a few minutes, she was running around like crazy), and inquire about this one. The waitress goes to the back, and does a huddle with another waitress. I watch them discuss for a few minutes, then our waitress samples it. Then they discuss some more. After 10 or so minutes, she returns and says that's what it's supposed to taste like. It's definitely possible (I'm no connoisseur), but the 3 of us still thought the wine was "off". She gladly gives my friend a glass filled with another type of wine, no questions asked. My friend approves of the taste of this one, and the rest of the evening goes smoothly. Props to customer care here. Not sure if I would recommend the wines here (I'm not much of a wine person), but my friends approve. And I can definitely vouch for the beer and food here (see my other reviews). read more

Really cool building, though not in the nicest part of town. So definitely go in a group, and in broad daylight. The sights we saw walking back to out condo were eye opening. But the winery is neat. They do generous pours for their beer and wine tastings, which we tried both. Wasn't a big fan of any of the beers, which were a little too hoppy for my taste. The wines on the other hand, were pretty good. They only make a couple of their own at this point, but they serve wines from other winerys in their flights. This was a very interesting place, in my opinion. It's kind of out there and not in a very safe neighborhood. We walked there from the Seawall near Canada place and saw lots of homeless people and even some police activity. The place itself is really cute, very hipster. I got the red wine flight, and honestly didn't really like any of the wines. Maybe I'm just spoiled living near Napa and Sonoma, but I don't think I'm a fan of Canadian wine. I came to an event here for Okanagan Crush Pad and was so impressed with the space. How these guys managed to get the licensing for this space is beyond me but good on them for jumping through whatever hoops were required. Someone told me it's $10,000 just to rent the space for an event. Whoa! If you've got the money though this is a sweet-ass venue for something spectacular and unique. I like the idea of wine on tap. Great idea for a by-the-glass program. So many events fail when it comes to a decent glass of wine. I checked out their website and they even have a band for your event if you need it. I don't see anything on their site about catering so I presume you're free to go with whomever you choose. I see they hosted a course for the Secret Supper Soiree which is pretty cool. By far one of the hippest and coolest places to go to in Vancouver. Whether you're on a first date, out with a friend for lunch, or meeting with a group of people for drinks, this is the spot to go to! However a little bit out of the way, the Winery is still a close walk from Gastown and has nearby parking right outside of the restaurant. All the wine and beer is locally made, and some distilled right in the very restaurant! Guests are even welcome to a free tour of the distillery during less busy hours (though not very big or very exciting, unless you're curious to see what it looks like.) With a cozy set of couches and seats against barrels stacked tall, a beautiful (marble, maybe?) fireplace, incredibly high wooden panelled ceilings, and other exquisite decor, Urban Winery's got a concept and it's flying! Overall the wines were very disappointing. It was my first time having Canadian wines but I guess I shouldn't have expected much. The salumi board was pretty expensive for what we got. The place can be hard to fine, just over sized wooden doors that don't look like you are about to enter a winery. I ordered a flight of wines and their beet salad. Everything from the food to the service was amazing. I would highly recommend this place if you're in the area. One thing to take note of though is parking. It is street parking and if you are from the States, not the signage. My car got towed, the restaurant was helpful in helping me locate it, however an employee said the same thing happened to them as well. Besides that, I would want to return again, just maybe on foot since Canada doesn't have Uber or Lyft. read more

Glad we ventured way out of the busy streets of touristy Gastown to walk a few blocks here. This is a full-on industrial winery where half the tall warehouse was relegated to wine-making and the other half to wine-drinking. We enjoyed a 5-glass flight with 1 oz tastings for $15. This was a red and white selection called "The Goods" and there were a few other options depending on your varietal spectrum preference. We had to sit at the bar but it was fine. Food is pretty good but I was a little disappointed in the meat, cheese and dip platter. I wouldn't order it again. Hummus and pizza were good. Wine flight was fun and there are 4 or 5 to choose from. They don't have a lot of beer options so for picky people looking for beer you probably won't love the selection. I've been to VUW twice now. The first time was a few years back, and they only had wine. The decor is amazing, the location is a bit out of the way, but the actual atmosphere was so wonderful. We sat upstairs as it was a birthday party and we had the entire top floor. A big square table that you can actually see each other. The server was super knowledgeable and it was really lovely. Take it to nowish. I went for another birthday party. Now they have food. And beer. We were also downstairs which can be crazy but again, the server was very patient and on top of everything. 3 of us got chintzed on the wine pour (which she did rectify). Some people had beer, some had wine which was great because it appeased everyone. Note: There rotating tap was amazing. It was cucumber beer but once it's out, it's gone! The food was amazing! We had brunch and I would go back for it any day. I had the Railtown Breakfast Wrap(fried egg, bacon, avocado, arugula, sprouts, pickled onion, hummus, flatbread + brunch spuds) minus the bacon and it was everything I could hope for and more. My parents got Sommelier's Choice Wine Flights ($12) which included 2 white, 1 rose and 2 red wines all produced in BC. They really enjoyed trying out different types of wines selected by our sommelier. Because of the hot weather I got a glass of pilsner instead. For wine paring, we got delicious Seared Scallops with Terrato + Bacon Jam ($16) which consisted of Cauliflower Puree, Pickled Mushrooms and Crispy Kale Chips. It tasted amazingly good. Regardless of its small portion, it definitely deserves its price. The scallops were very fresh and I loved the puree as well as a hint of enoki mushrooms. Our second dish was Flank Steak with Chimichurri ($14) which had slices of medium steak with sprouts, malbec molasses and chimichurri (Argentinan green sauce made of finely-chopped parsley, minced garlic, olive oil, oregano and white vinegar) on top. As I am not a big fan of steak, I didn't really enjoy the meat itself but I loved all other ingredients they used for this dish. It had interesting flavours that blended well with the steak.
