*Update*: The owner of The Cutting Edge Salon, Anna, has reached out to me since I posted my review and offered to issue a refund to my original form of payment. She said they are training a new receptionist and will utilize my feedback for future staff training. I appreciate her reaching out to resolve my concerns. read more

I've been going to Anna for balayage for the past year and a half. She always gives me the perfect cool blonde tone. When I couldn't get a pre-holiday appointment with her, I chose to go to Leanne. Leanne did a beautiful job! She is friendly and professional. A few days later, I decided that my blonde was a little too "warm." I reached out to Anna, and she squeezed me into her schedule the next day for a quick tone and shampoo, at no extra charge. It is worth the drive from Richmond to keep coming back... not to mention the newest and sweetest salon pup, Weller! I highly recommend! read more

I'm usually very uncomfortable getting a haircut. At this establishment, I'm not. Ester killed it. She walked me through each step of the cut, and it's the best one I've gotten in years. Come to this place with confidence. read more

Terrible customer service. They confirmed an appointment and didn't honor it the following day. I was visiting from out of state, thankfully I didn't walk the 15 minutes from my hotel to find out I wasn't going to sit for a cut, would not have been pretty. Follow up: Anna, the owner reached out and expressed her apologies for the mishap and offered a complimentary cut. I appreciate the gesture. read more

Anna was wondeful and very gifted. She was able to calm my over dramatic reaction to a recent coloring and educated me on my hair's ability. I came in hating my hair color to loving my hair and knowing how to take care of it ! She is the owner and really cares about what her client wants! I won't be going anywhere else and I love an hour away read more

Today I had a wonderful experience at The Cutting Edge. My appointment started right on time, the salon was clean, and I found parking right outside. Jasmine was extremely personable and did a fabulous job on my hair. She listened to how I liked my hair cut and cut it perfectly! This Salon was recommended by a co-worker and I must say I am glad that I went. I have naturally curly ringlet-type 3B hair. I have been looking for a long time for someone who understands my curls and my hair's needs. Anna was amazing. I wanted a shorter, softer curl-cut. She listened to me and made professional recommendations. Looking around, all of the clients in this salon looked great when they left. I will most definitely be back. ~btw I was told that my new hairstyle made me look younger (I'm in my end 40's)...can't get better than this. read more

I had a great experience with Linda. She was super friendly and had great advice for my cut. Will definitley be going back.

Let me first start off by saying the staff is super friendly. Really great people. With that, I entered the salon, went to the front desk to ask if they do just appointments or offer walk ins. Lady was super friendly. Told me yes, but told me an appointment was coming in right then and couldn't get me till 5:45. That would have been a hour and half wait, which is fine. I told them I would just come back. Then we were approached by the gentleman who cut my hair who said his appointment was running late and he would verify if he was in the area. If he wasn't close he would start mine. I was in to get a new hairstyle that I haven't received before but have finally talked myself into and to cut my extremely large beard off. Well, we get started on the beard because the guy never answers. I'm thinking, great, I'll be able to get it now. A quarter of the way through my beard, the guy showed up. This is where I had my bad experience. From that point on, everything was rushed. He is clipping away at my beard. I don't mind that much because I was in to get it short, really short. But we only took it halfway because he was rushing to get to the other guy. Cool. No worries. I go sit down and wait till they are done. They finish. My turn again. He can take me now. Sweet. Go and sit down and he is ready for my hair portion. (I was waiting to see what my hair looked like before cutting beard anymore) I tell him what I want and he gets too it. We start talking about the top portion, and keep in mind, this is new to me. I wanted his full attention and professionalism. After all it's my hair everyone sees. He asks how much off the top to cut, I say not sure, let's start small and work from there. We've all said that right. My response I was given..."Well I have to get it right the first time because my next appointment is waiting for me right now." I mean really. Talking about making a rush decision. I felt rushed and unimportant during the whole haircut as he is cutting away. Needless to say, my hair cut was uneven in the back. Looks nothing like I wanted and I showed a pic of what I was looking for. My beard was only cut halfway because he wouldn't give me the time or attention. I've never been rushed like that before ever. It all could have been avoided if he didn't take more work than he could handle. That's unprofessional. I would have just came back and been fine. But he said he could take me. Because I'm a nice guy I still tipped pretty well too. Gave two stars purely on the kind staff. read more

I called ahead to see if they were open and if they were still taking customers for the night, but no one answered. First of all love the website. The stylist bios are cute and funny and actually helped me choose the right stylist for me for my first visit here. Also love that you can actually book an appointment online - so easy. The place is on the corner of Main Street so it is super hard to find parking - you have to find something on the street, they don't have a lot. The place is tiny but felt modern. Jessica cut my hair and I felt like she really listened to what I wanted, offered suggestions and took her time and didn't rush to get my appointment done even when her next one showed up. read more

Anna is amazing. SO talented; I have challenging curly hair with a couple of cowlicks & she cuts it so beautifully. Anna really listens and works with you to give you the haircut that you want. She is very patient and personable. Cannot speak highly enough of her skill and professionalism. I've gotten my hair cut at well regarded salons in Philadelphia and NYC, and the Cutting Edge is on par regarding skill, and light years ahead regarding friendliness! The staff are all welcoming and friendly, and I likewise appreciated the COVID precautions. They are doing a lot to keep staff & guests as safe as possible. Thank you, Anna! read more

I NEVER write reviews on Yelp! But I just have to at this point. Mike over at The Cutting Edge Salon is amazing. He takes so much time with you and really just gives you what you ask for. For as long as I live near this establishment I will NOT have anyone but Mike touch my hair. This is coming from a Navy Veteran who use to never care about his hair, or how it looked! Seriously... if you're new in town like I was 7 months ago don't waste any more of your time and go book and appointment here. I feel like I need to say that I've only had my hair cut by Mike, but I'm sure everyone else there is super talented as well!! read more

Justin is amazing! I have been seeking him out for the past 12 years and have recommended him to many people. I travel from Staunton to have Justin cut my hair! I love this salon! The entire staff is friendly and customer focused. Justin is consistently the best in the business. He is an artist with color and has always cut my hair exactly the way I ask. I am a customer for life! read more

This place is a joke...but not that funny when you go in an you ask for something and leave with a buzz cut! The girl that cut my hair didn't seem to know what the heck she was doing, and while I was there I felt totally cheated by what they have advertised on the website. Do yourself a favor, and stay clear. read more

Had an excellent experience there this week. They spent time discussing what the best color options were and how to repair the lousy cut a different place had given me. You don't feel like they are just processing you through but rather a real customer that they care about. I'll be back! Highly recommend! read more

I arrived 10 minutes early. The stylist who greeted me told me my stylist would be ready for my 1:30 appointment. She also gave me a bottle of water. Hence the one star. I watched as my stylist worked on one client; then moved over and worked on another. About 1:50 I figured it was my turn - but no! She started working on another. 2pm I got up and told the girl at the front that a half hour was long enough for me. "Did I want to book another appointment?" "Nope". Bad enough it took so long. Someone should have come over to me and said, "Hey, I'll be another 15 minutes or 20 minutes or whatever - Will that be ok?" But nothing. No recognition at all. So much for a first impression. I will continue my quest for a decent stylist in Charlottesville. 3 years here and not a one to be found. read more

Anna is so positive, professional, and really great at what she does. I love the cut and volume she gave me, and how she made me feel. Thankful my appointment time with Justin didn't work out... I was very disappointed with his service (I feel like he didn't listen to what I wanted or even try to help me achieve my desired color results) and his overall professionalism was awful. Anna explained the process to me within 2 minutes and did it in a way that was clear and honest. Thankful she saved my hair and overall experience today! I'll be back to see her. read more

The staff is incredibly nice. That being said, they should not advertise being able to do updos at the moment. I thought maybe my hair looked sloppy during the trial because I was just going to take it down and they didn't put in all their effort. When my wedding day rolled around, my hair was laughably bad, but I didn't have time to have them start over, nor was a confident it would get better with starting over. I went home and took it down and did it myself. My bridesmaids also had bad experiences. I didn't want to leave a bad review, because everyone there is very nice and I have gotten a great haircut there, but I felt obligated to say something in case someone was booking them soon for an updo. read more

After my first haircut I would've rated this place a 4 and decided to go back. The woman who cut my hair wrote down what she did the first time (very simple men's haircut with a part) so it should've been easy to do the same thing again. -A hair stylist should never tell you they made "an executive decision" and changed something without asking -She took two big chunks of hair out of the back of my head - it makes sense why she didn't offer me a mirror to see the back until I asked -The length was completely uneven around the sides - I needed my wife to touch things up as soon as I got home. Never going back to this place again. read more

I was really scared to try a new hair salon after moving to Charlottesville for law school, but it had to be done eventually. Luckily Ashley did an amazing job!! The color and cut were both perfect, and she did a great job with my eyebrows too! The prices are also really reasonable (in my opinion). I'd definitely recommend this place (and Ashley in particular) to others! read more

I would definitely recommend Niko for a curly hair cut and also very helpful with your questions.

Niko was great! I'm usually very low maintenance with my hair and I wasn't totally sure what I was going to do for my first dye but Niko was so helpful and helped me pick out the best color for me knowing that. He really listened and made my hair look so natural. He was training someone and listening to him Talk about his technique was so cool, he is so intentional in every aspect. I love the way it looks and as soon as my sister saw it she wanted the same look. You're in great hands with Niko :) read more

I NEVER write reviews, but I just had to do it for this salon! The salon is clean and has tons of natural light. Staff is knowledgable and friendly. Leanna gave me EXACTLY what I wanted. I was getting almost 6 inches cut off of and wanted specific layers that I showed her in a picture. She didn't chop it all off at first, she cut off about 4 inches and checked in with me to make sure I was ok with it and I told her it looked good and we could go even shorter. So great of her to do that and she also checked in with the layers to make sure it was what I wanted. I really appreciated this! The staff are listed on the website with their specialties, so if you wanted someone who is an expert at curly hair cuts you could look them up. And when you book along, you choose what time of cut you want (man/woman/child/short/long/curly etc). I thought that was really nice. ALSO THE HAIRCUT WAS LITERALLY $36!!!!! I haven't had a haircut that inexpensive in a long time, AND it was seriously one of the best cuts I've ever gotten! Also it is so conveniently located right between UVA and the Downtown Mall. I have been recommended to SO many people already and I just got my hair cut 3 days ago! read more

**UPDATED REVIEW** After my review was posted, I was contacted by one of the owners of the salon. He was very pleasant and informed me that the day was not the normal customer experience most people have. I believed this was the case initially, so I really appreciated it being confirmed by the owner. He addressed any and all concerns I had, and honestly, I likely would give the salon another try if I were back in Charlottesville. Anyone who cares that much about their customers and their business deserves it. read more
