The staff was very rude. No one acknowledged our arrival. I did enjoy my massage by the girl that washed my hair but my enjoyment ended there. The young woman that cut my hair didn't have a clue. She said if I wanted my hair shorter I could come back another day? The salon was not busy. They did not wash my sister's hair and never asked if she wanted it washed. She was very disappointed with the cut. Again, not as short as she asked for and not anything like the picture she showed the girl that cut her hair. Definitely will not be back. Just moved here from Florida, and my hair was an absolute mess. Not only was it way overdue for coloring, i had colored the roots with a touch up myself, cut my own hair VERY poorly & had tried to lift it myself! Easy to call them & book an appointment. I was booked with Megan, she asked me what i needed and I told her at our consultation, and she gave me a quote on the spot and we set up an appointment. While she fixed up my hair and was blowing it out, i just kept saying "wow. WOW!" she went above and beyond, and has a repeat client for sure!! The girls there are so sweet, fun, and talented. Do NOT go to Esther! I gave her two chances to fix the HORRIBLE balayage she did on my hair! She was beyond unprofessional when I came back to get it fixed when she told me to go get a cape. She seriously had me go fetch my own cape for her to bleach my hair. Only "fixed" half when I came back and left me with so much damage! On 6/23 I had my first apt at face value salon and it was absolutely amazing! I don't travel to that side of Charlottesville much but I had final found somewhere to do my make up for my bridal shower so I was not passing that up! When you walk in you are immediately greeted and offered coffee, calming tea or just water which is way more then anywhere offers that I have been to. I didn't get my hair done so I couldn't recommend a hair stylist but I can say all the ones around me at the time of my appointment were professional and were taking the time to get to know their clients. Now for the fun part reviewing my artist. Yessi was my makeup artist yesterday and I will be first to admit I'm super nervous when someone does my makeup first the first time I use to go to the same person every single time I got it done. YESS WAS ABSOLUTELY AMAZING THOUGH!!!!!! She took the time to get to know exactly what I wanted she helped to figure out ways on how to exactly do the eye make up I wanted. I couldn't have asked for a better artist. If you have a event or just want to have fun and get your make up done go here and ask for Yessi she was so kind and sweet and helped me look beautiful for my special day. I had a good fIrst appointment with Brooke for a cut and highlight. I wanted to book her again but she was booked, so I took an appointment with Taylor. I had blonde highlights previously but wanted to go more towards my brunette natural color. I liked the color when I left the salon, but after 2 days, the underside of my hair was turning a blonde-green color. I was very frustrated, as I followed the recommendations Taylor gave me for shampoo/conditioner/products. I called the salon and it took the manager a week to return my call. I really thought they just blew me off. After a week, the manager called and offered for Taylor to fix my hair. "Fixing" my hair just meant toning it. When I left the salon I could still see the blonde peeking through and an uneven color. I pointed this out and Taylor insisted it looked even to her, and asked me to step into the lobby light to see. She insisted again it was even and I just accepteed that I wasn't going to be happy with my hair here and left. Another few days and the underside of my hair started turning again. I eventually had my hair fixed at Cutting Edge Salon and they got it right the first time! I am so so happy with my hair now and can't understand why two tries weren't enough for Face Value to get it right. Even if my hair did turn out thee second time, I still would not come back due to the terrible customer service from the manager. read more

I highly recommend this salon and Bea. I had my first appointment at the salon on July 12th. Bea took the time to listen to what I what I was looking for in the cut and color. The service was both professional, friendly, and relaxing. It is expensive but she did let me know exactly what everything cost before the service and I checked other salons and actually they weren't that much higher. I love Aveda products. I had been with my last stylist for over 6yrs and was very concerned about going elsewhere but got such a bad haircut previously. Where to begin... I'm new(ish) to the Charlottesville area. A little over a year ago, I relocated here from Richmond, where I lived for 6 years. Due to my hectic work schedule, I haven't been able to explore / embrace this quaint and beautiful city. We all know how difficult it is to find a good stylist. Especially for me because my hair is VERY long (almost to the top of my bum), but once we find that person, we commit to them. Due to my move, a combination of distance and scheduling conflicts made it impossible to be able to make an appointment with my RVA stylist. Unwilling to settle on just any ole body, I chose to forgo cuts all together. I was so overdo for some hair care, that I finally broke down and chose to take a risk. I'm a spontaneous person, so I chose at the last minute to try and make a same day appointment on a Saturday. The only salon that could accommodate me was Face Value Salon. I made an appointment with William, and despite the anxiety, I went in with an open mind. This is where it gets good: William was INCREDIBLE. We sat down and had a brief but thorough consultation where he asked key and specific questions to get a better understanding of me and my expectations. I went in thinking that due to my negligence, I would have to chop off at least 4" (HORRIFYING), but he explained how he would incorporate long, tapered layers into a healthy cut, and to my most delightful surprise, the biggest cut was less than 3"!! William made me feel so comfortable! I loved his welcoming nature, and his extensive knowledge of hair health was impressive refreshing. By the end of my appointment, we hugged like old friends. I am beyond words for how pleased I am with my visit to Face Value. William--you have a client for life! read more

Yari did my balayage color and it's stunning. I get so many complements. It especially looks pretty in the light when you can see the full dimension of the color.(I'm not sure if that's the correct term for it but you can see all of the shades and it looks like a prism of beautiful color.) Amazing experience with this salon! They have a great staff that is friendly and works with the clients to make sure perfection is achieved! I felt comfortable at my hair and makeup trial and when I walked out of the salon I looked absolutely amazing. My wedding was a wonderful experience. The artists arrived early and made sure all of my wedding party was happy with their results. I was a bit stressed out being the bride, but they made sure I was calm and relaxed before starting my makeup. All of my wedding guests complimented my hair and makeup. I went to this salon because I have had luck with aveda salons in the past and I not from the area. That being said, stay away if you can! I should have known when I made the appointment on the phone and the receptionist sounded like she was put out that I even called that I should have gone else where, but I didn't and now I am paying the price with an aweful haircut. I went in wanting a pretty major cut (my hair was down to my mid back and I wanted it to my shoulders). I brought in pictures of exactly what I wanted and described how my hair reacts when it is cut shorter. Then when she made the first cut I think the stylist knew she messed up bc she paused for a bit but then kept cutting. I am now left with a very unflattering bob haircut. I will not be returning and I would suggest that if you are wanting to make an appointment here only do it with their highest level stylists. read more

I cannot recommend this place enough. I have never colored my hair, because I've always been nervous of ruining it, but this summer I was determined to go blonde. This place was recommended to me by a friend, and from the time I set up the appointment I knew I had a made the right choice. Everyone in the salon contributes to making it a fun and welcoming experience. I came in for a full balayage and Justin did an AMAZING job. I was nervous to go from brown to blonde, but during the consult, Justin was so thorough in explaining how we could accomplish this and what color I would most likely end up with based on my natural color. The entire thing took over three hours, and it was such a fun and comfortable experience. I could tell that Justin was thorough in everything he did and nothing felt rushed. My end result was EXACTLY what I wanted. When my appointment was finished, it was pouring rain, so Justin walked me to my car with an umbrella so my hair wouldn't get messed up. I have never had such a wonderful salon experience, but the stylist was also so interactive and took the necessary time to hear about my hair - the concerns, the positive aspects, and the direction I hoped to go with it. I got great service for about a year, then found they are a victim of their own success. It has a very nice separate "mens" area, but it is not staffed, you have to make a salon appointment. I have been paying for a "membership" which entitles me to unlimited cuts...if you can get an appointment. Unfortunately, I have had to make them further and further in advance. I have never been successful getting a walk in cut. The realities of my personal and professional life precludes appointments weeks in advance. Thus, the membership option has become a big waste of money. If you have a busy, chaotic schedule, dont buy a membership. read more

I had my bridal hair and makeup done with Face Value. The mothers and bridal party also had various services. I worked with Lucinda, who is definitely a character. She does good work, but she also talks a LOT about how good her work is. My biggest piece of advice would be to make sure that you 1) do the test - it took a while to get her to understand how I wanted my hair, and 2) leave a LOT of time since she is so chatty. To her credit, during the test, she was inistent that I not leave until I was completely happy. She also took photos to be sure to remember how I wanted it done. My bridal party was also happy with their services. The salon is quite nice, and they let you bring in lunch (there are a few little lunch places nearby). read more

I have been going to Face Value for several years and have been thoroughly pleased with all their services. I have enjoyed working with Julia, Chelsea, and Carolina. They all do an excellent job with my very troublesome hair. Today I want to talk about Lucinda and wigs. Lucinda guided me through the process of picking out the best wig style and color to most closely match the above mentioned troublesome (and rapidly disappearing) hair. When the wig came in, she spent a long time trimming it and styling it. I have learned that wigs right out of the box need to be tweaked to look natural. I just came back from a second styling session and the wig is just right. It looks like my hair used to look. I strongly recommend Lucinda and Face Value for anyone who is contemplating getting a wig - either for fun or to help with a serious hair problem. What a wonderful salon this is! My daughter-in-law and her bridal party including mothers and grandmother recently had our hair and make-up done for the wedding. There were ten of us. The staff was ready for us and moved us through the different stations efficiently but with great attention to detail. They made sure that they discussed each step of what they were doing and asked for input, but they are truly artists and brought out the best look in all of us. We were allowed to bring in food and drinks and had a wonderful experience. Before we left anyone who wanted or needed a touch up could have that done. I had my hair and makeup done by Lucinda for my wedding in October 2009, and my husband and I have been regular clients of Face Value since then. For my wedding hair and makeup, Lucinda rescued me after I had 2 failed hair tests at another local salon. She was able to give me the style I wanted, which ended up requiring clip-in hair extensions (something I had never thought about before!)-- and it looked fabulous! I got so many compliments about my long hair at my wedding...Nobody guessed it wasn't my hair! :) For my makeup, Lucinda kept it very natural and elegant, and she used the makeup I asked her to use (that I brought), and I also purchased some from her own line that I really liked. All in all, it was a pleasure to work with someone who was SO concerned about me and what I wanted. I felt like I could tell her if I wasn't happy with something and I wouldn't offend her. It's really all about the client! Lucinda did my hair and makeup at our wedding venue, and she stayed past her scheduled time so she could touch up my hair and makeup during photographs; it was very sweet. Additionally, my bridal party had their hair done by the other stylists at FV, and they were pleased with their hair and the atmosphere in the salon. Currently, my husband is a client in Face Value's barber shop and really enjoys the "men's club" atmosphere. He gets a soda, there's a TV on, and he gets an old fashioned neck massage each time he gets a haircut. On the other side of the wall in the main salon, I get offered coffee and tea and surround myself with the other women coming in for highlights and blowouts. I get my haircut by Andrea, whose signature haircut is a 'pin-up girl/hollywood glam' cut that is absolutely fabulous and wearable. Try it out! You'll love Face Value. read more
