As a wavy/curly-haired person, I always feel nervous going to a new place for a haircut, but after coming to Honeycomb four times since moving to Cville, I can definitely say I've found my trusted salon in town! Crystal has talked me through different ideas depending on what I'm feeling and has shaped my hair for both short and long cuts, resulting in manageable hair that works with my waves/curls! And importantly, it doesn't turn into the dreaded triangular poof... I also appreciate that she takes into account what your typical regimen is when cutting your hair (I'm very minimalist aka don't typically style my hair with tools and like to either air dry or throw my hair into a bun); she has given me low maintenance tips on how to manage it that I continue to use. Definitely recommend coming here if you have wavy/curly hair! Note: The front door is a bit hidden between two larger shops so look for the yellow honeycomb sign on the door and go up the stairs and into the left door. I just got a haircut with Skye and I am completely blown away. I'm in my 30s and this was the best haircut experience I've ever had! First, the place is SUPER cute - aesthetically so pleasant and beautiful inside! Second, Skye was a gem! She was a pleasure to talk too, absolutely beautiful inside and out and took so much care in STYLING my hair. She didn't just give me a hair she STYLED IT-- and I was shook at how cheap it was! The Honeycomb is fantastic! I've been in a few salons around town and have not found the "one", however I stopped looking after I had my first cut with Leah. The girl is excellent with a pair of sheers! To me, my biggest priority to an awesome cut is that it should be low maintenance and manageable with use of 0 products. She rocked it. Leah listened to what I wanted and delivered one of the best hair cuts I've ever had. I asked for a relayer of my straight yet sort of wavy hair with a cut that would grow out nicely. After the first week post-hair cut, I couldn't stop marveling at how great it looked with out the need to blow dry, product, or brush it (yes I was that lazy one day). I was super impressed with how she was not only able to gauge the properties of my hair but she had the foresight to envision where the cut would go next while I grew it out. I really dug how Leah had such an easy-going personality which made it fun and relaxing to hang out as she cut my hair. I also really appreciated the fact that Leah took the time to answer my questions about how to achieve healthier hair without feeling like she was an infomercial for products. I took a long time when I moved to Charlottesville (for graduate school) to choose a salon, because I have thick, curly hair and a bad haircut leaves me looking like a poodle...especially in the C'Ville humidity! I asked everyone I knew who had curly hair where they went, and it seemed that almost everyone went "back home" in fear of bad curly cuts. Eventually, a friend told me that her room-mate swore by The Honeycomb and Bella, the resident curly expert. Initially I was a bit afraid of the $50 pre-tip price, but this is definitely a "you get what you pay for" experience! First of all, the salon itself is fantastic. I knew as soon as I saw the resident dog, Clyde, that I was in a friendly environment. The décor is also seriously cool with an airy, modern vintage feel. The ladies also all have amazing tattoos...and even better hair. Bella is definitely the most experienced person who has ever cut my hair. She took the time to analyze my curls before she washed them and then we planned the cut. She was exceptionally dedicated to making sure that I was okay with each step of the cut and explained to me what she was doing not only with her scissors but also with products and the diffuser, which apparently I had been using all wrong! In addition to Bella's excellence, I also have to attest to the amazing product line they just started carrying: Davines. I had long been looking for an eco-friendly product line that also could manage my mane without giving it the "hippie" look, and this Italian, highly-sustainable brand was just the thing I needed. It smells amazing and leaves my hair soft, shiny, and set for a Virginia summer. I left after my cut with a few samples, but I soon returned (after some budgeting- these products are pricey but also very worth it) to buy the suite of curl-friendly products. This review is somewhat lengthy but totally worth it. First things first, go to Leah if you have curly hair. And here's why... I'm from Los Angeles and went to school in DC, and then moved to Charlottesville to work at UVA. Needless to say, I've had a lot of good cuts from these major cities and was EXTREMELY skeptical about letting someone cut my hair from tiny cville. The main reason being I'm half black and half white, and honestly A LOT of ppl can't cut curly hair. Adding some black texture to it kinda throws people off. Also, not many mixed people in cville so I figured they didn't have much practice in my hair type. I found a few reviews on here for honeycomb and curly hair, and Leah had several reviews. Way more than anyone else that I could find, so I cancelled my appt at moxie and tried Leah. Leah is AMAZING. She first asked how are my curls and I told her. I told her I wanted a trim, some volume (somewhat loose but tight curl pattern) and try to keep a little length if possible. Mind you, no one has ever really been able to keep the length but could give me the volume. I didn't even show her a pic because I didn't have a good one in mind but she listened and did her thing! She added internal layers... never heard of that but I'll be sticking to them from now on! I was so blown away by her work and she's so nice! I wasn't exactly sure what I wanted but Leah gave me exactly what I needed! I'll only be going to her for as long as I'm in cville. Wonderful place on the Downtown Mall, I'm so glad I came here. It was my first time ever coloring my hair and Hannah did an amazing job. The whole place has a relaxed fun vibe. All the staff were super friendly, welcoming, and knowledgeable AND they played good music (which is important when you are going to be sitting there for 2 hours). She wasn't exactly sure what to do to achieve what I wanted so she asked her fellow stylists for advice. I really appreciate someone who isn't too prideful and who is willing to ask for help when they need it. My hair had highlights that were growing out badly and she fixed it with an all over color. She was very prompt and the salon was really nice. It was also really affordable - I think because Leah is is junior stylist. Plus the owner brings her dog in sometimes and he was super sweet and he licked my toes. Bonus points for the dog! I saw Ashley for my super duper curly hair. She is a curl hair expert! She did an excellent job on my curls and gave me a much needed cut and style after not having had a haircut for over 6 months! She definitely understands how curly hair works. Leah knows exactly how to cut and style curly hair, especially if you're super curly like me. i left Honeycomb with all my length still intact but with beautiful volume, layers and clean ends. I'm pretty picky about who cuts my hair, since I love having my hair long and it seems like every hair stylist I meet thinks that short is the way to go. But after having at least four other people personally recommend The Honeycomb, I knew that I had to try it out. First, scheduling an appointment was so easy. Obviously, you can call and set something up. Or you can visit their page on Schedulicity (https://www.schedulicity.com/Scheduling/THEBJL) and pick a date, time, and hair stylist that suits your schedule. Since everyone who had recommended The Honeycomb had personally recommended Claibourne, I went with her and was very pleased. She did a great job of listening to what I wanted, making sure that we were both on the same page, offering recommendations when I was unsure about something, and checking throughout the haircut to make sure everything was on track. She also checked a few times at the end of the haircut to make sure I was happy with the final product. All-in-all, I was very pleased with her work. Update: The last time I went, for a pre-graduation haircut, Crystal cut my hair and was also fantastic: she listened well, kept me updated throughout the haircut, and asked for feedback to make sure we were on the same page. Everyone at The Honeycomb is very personable and welcoming. They also just moved into a new location which is super cute with high ceilings and exposed brick walls. They have a cute little waiting area now with couches next to the check-out desk and what looks like 4 hair-cutting stations. The entrance to the new location is right off the downtown mall. Although they're talking about trying to get a sign put up outside, there's currently no indicator that you're in the right place until you go in the door and walk up the stairs (Suite 104). They also offer gift cards! I would definitely recommend The Honeycomb. $50 for a women's haircut is not a bad price to pay, especially with such thoughtful, personable, and competent hair stylists! read more

I had such a great cut with Crystal yesterday, and wanted to chime in with everyone saying what a great salon Honeycomb is. Their product line is super eco friendly, and the two products I bought ('love' curl cream and the leave-in volumizing conditioner) are some of the nicest I've had in a while. Love the ambiance, very welcoming and laid back, with really well curated decor for your eyes to wander over as you enjoy your appointment. Crystal is brilliant. She did a really thorough consultation, asked a bunch of questions to make sure we were in the same page, and would pause our conversation occasionally to check in. This is a review specifically for their colorist, Jahnavi. She is amazing. I'm new to the whole world of colored hair and was terrified about damaging my hair and the constant up keep. Jahnavi was great and very reassuring. We chatted about what kind of color I wanted and what kind of maintenance I was willing to do. I love the look of platinum blonde hair but who has the time and money for that? Instead we did a beautiful ombré with the ends being very light. It looks stunning and it's been over 4 months since she initially colored it. It's so easy to maintain and even though it was slightly expensive on the front end ($150 maybe? Remember I'm a hair color newbie) I think it was worth it considering I only need to go every 6-8 months or so since it grows out so nicely. Side note: I've also had my hair cut twice there but haven't loved either experience. I will probably try a different place for my next cut. read more

I had a haircut/trim appointment with Anna, the junior hair stylist at The Honeycomb. She was great and lots of fun and listened to all of my requests about my hair. My haircut turned out great and she was really patient. I really recommend her! Her rate is about half compared to the other stylists there but she is just as skilled. I got a blowout done here in April 2016 and my hair turned out looking crispy/fried. I will not reveal the stylists name, but needless to say I was disappointed. She told me that my hair turned out the way it did because I had not cut it in a long time. I didn't believe her though because the last blowout I got, my hair turned out looking sleek and nice and I hadn't had a cut in 6 months! So I'm a person who has lived in major metropolitan areas and have not been able to find a hair stylist that I liked (4 years in DC - I should have found someone!) - I would plan trips home based on when I needed my hair cut and go to my trusty salon. Do you ever feel like you're a really picky person, but don't want to tell the stylist that in case they judge you?
