I asked for a modern mullet, I showed a photo showing specifically what I wanted and that's not what I got. My barber was cutting my hair so fast like he was in a hurry. Mind you I was the only other customer in there so I don't know why Kenny was rushing it. My hair had shape and flowed very well and that's what I love about my hair and I always keep that in mind with getting a haircut. But Kenny got rid of all the things I wanted in a haircut. I hope this place does better because they should follow what the customer wants because it's not their hair that gets ruined! read more

A good friend recommended KS to me when I was new in town and in desperate need of a good shearing. When I first entered KS I was a little puzzled as to how the system worked, and realized that the you simply sit down and figure out amongst other waiting patrons who goes next and to what barber. You can wait until your desired barber is available or just go to whoever is assigned to you. I was paired fortunately with Lee (back right chair) who trimmed my beard and cut my hair stylishly and expediently to my specifications. Lee has since cut my hair and trimmed my beard about 4 more times and has always done a great job. He is meticulously yet efficient and solicits my feedback at every step. Even when the shop is swamped, he makes sure I look good. I do not have any experience with any of the other barbers in this shop but have heard good things about Kenny (the owner, front right chair) and ND (back left chair). There are some minor cons to this place. The aforementioned waiting arrangement seems like it could go awry at times. Similarly, service is strictly first come first serve (no appointments), which can be problematic if you have limited availability. Also, there can be a bit of a language barrier with some of the barbers (pictures help a lot here). All that being said, this place strikes a great balance between value and service and is worth a shot if you're in need of a quality cut in Charlottesville. 5 stars for Lee and his service, but a slight downgrade to 4 for the overall experience. read more

I have always liked the hair cut I've gotten there. I overlook the uncleanliness of the place, the smoky smell of the hair cutters and the language barriers, because I like how they cut my hair and the it's a good price. But, when I went in Tues, I had a terrible experience around paying. He wrung up $16. I gave him 2 twenty dollar bills I got from the ATM because I wanted to leave more than a $4 tip. I left a $9 tip, seems fair for such a reasonable cut price. Only after getting home did I realize I was shorted $10. I returned. They argued that they cut was $26, except $26 is wash/cut/blowdry and all I got was a cut. They argued there was no $16 service, but I KNOW that was what was wrung up. They began to show me the register record, but stopped after asking Ben about it, said it was too far back (1 and a half days). I pressed for them to show me the transactions to prove there was not a $16 charge, they refused. Ben gave me $5 back. So, I paid $30, still not a terrible price, but definitely a terrible experience and I have no doubt he was ripping me off and the owner. So, if you go, ask in advance what the cost will be and count your change. read more

Not gona lie when I pulled up, I thought this place was sketchy as f*ck. But the interior is really nice. And how the staff dressed; I got a guy who had a white suit on with a white hat looking like a southern Colombia coke boss. In a good way. The guy was fly. When it comes to the haircut itself, it was done well. I don't know who this Kenny or whatever the name of the guy everyone is raving about is but my guy can cut hair too. Maybe he was Kenny. Lol. The only downside is I couldn't communicate with these guys very well. They spoke too fast and in broken English. So after I told my guy what I wanted and he didn't properly do it, I had to point to their haircuts on the wall and say a number like I was ordering take out for him to fully understand what I wanted. Recent transplant to Cville; and nervous about finding a new barber as I wasn't finding a "traditional" quality/hipster barber shop. KS is NOT hipster, but it IS quality. Came home and told my wife it was the best hair cutting experience of my life, and i wasn't joking. Fast, meticulous cut both times I've gone. There is a language barrier with the man who has helped me, but it's actually refreshing to not feel pressure to hold convo. Went with a picture of desired cut, and got exactly what I asked for. Only $23, but I have him $40 because the quality is something I would expect from a bigger city barber type place. The barber I requested (John) had the day off. Instead, I had Ben. We spent a fair amount of time before the cut ensuring that he knew how I wanted my hair cut. I wanted only 1/4 inch off the sides (that normally are slicked back) and about the same off the top. And I wanted the ears outlined so hair did not fall over them. What I got was about 1/4 inch of less off the top and all of the sides cut to less than 1/4 inch in length--he took off about 3 inches. There is nothing to comb back. It will take at least 3 months to have a cut that looks decent. Although we did not discuss the hair in the back, he cut it to about 1/2 inch up to the crown. So, the slicked back fenders were removed completely--sides and back. I don't think I'll be going back there again. I will say he and the other barbers were friendly and professional, but Ben ruined my hairstyle. He did not come close to what we agreed on. (To be clear, the cut itself is not bad. It's just that he did not give me the cut I requested and about which he seemed very clear.) read more

Went to Jacky and told him to give me a 1.5 to a 3.5 fade. He immediately grabbed a .5 and started cutting. When I told him to stop and he went to short he stopped but then didn't even out the other side of my head. Definitely won't be going back here. read more

After reading the reviews, I expected good results. Not only did I waste $100, walk away worse than I came before, but I am so frustrated and annoyed by how truly horrific my hair is now. I kept on telling my guy specific instructions WITH pictures AND videos. First, he gave me a haircut which was turned out hideous. He chopped it and thinned it beyond repair without any consultation or input from me. Then I told him AGAIN that I came in for a perm; he then proceeded to give me a perm but it quickly became evident that he had no idea what he was doing. When he washed my hair, he dug his nails into my scalp. Then with the blow dryer, he burned my scalp because he constantly kept the air very close on the hottest setting. This has been the WORST haircut experience I've had in my life. Maybe it was just the guy I had, but I will never come back here. I am truly shocked at how badly someone can mess up hair. I am horrified, shocked, and frustrated by how disastrous my experience was. I'm normally never this negative but the guy who did my hair had no clue what he was doing or what I wanted even after specific, repeated instructions WITH pictures and videos along with constantly checking on if he was doing what I wanted. As soon as I left, I RAN home to shampoo and condition my hair MANY times to get rid of the horrid perm. I really tried to trust the process, but wow...it was disaster after disaster and very apparent that there was no process. read more

Went to KS Hair Studio today, as I've been searching for the place where I want to make myself a regular, and think I found it. I went in the morning, so there wasn't any wait. I was immediately shown to the place where they shampoo your hair before the cut begins. They ask what you would like and they do it with both speed and precision. After he was done, I asked if I could get another shampoo (since who likes having to go home to wash their hair again?) - and they did it before styling my hair. Kenny was the best barber at Chung's, and when he left there to open his own place, I followed him. In my 29 years of getting haircuts, nobody has done a better, more consistent job than Kenny. My son got a whack job haircut so I had to ask them to just use a trimmer and cut hair very short. Those guys were laughing as his hair were being trimmed rather than being apologetic.
