I LOVE their chips! I dunno how they get them so thin and crispy, but they are the best!!! Also, the ranchera (white dip) and salsa are tasty together. Service was pretty slow for a Friday night and it wasn't busy, but we were patient/ not in a rush. I was debating between the chicken chimichangas, fajitas or the chicken salad. I ended with the chicken salad and my teen got the chimis. I was jealous, because the chicken isn't as flavorful on the salad as pre pandemic. It was less like the fajitas chicken and had a little not so great seasoning. The chicken chimichangas were good as usual, but the beans were darker and different flavor than before. Not sure? I like finding another authentic Mexican restaurant and El Toro fits my expectations! The chicken Fried Chimichanga Lunch was delicious and not at all overly fried, it was simply nice and crisp under the generous sauce. The toppings came separate and were perfect, the lettuce, tomato, guacamole can be added as you wish. The carnitas Street Taco was delicious with an abundance of sweet onions and cilantro. The carnitas was flavorful and the light corn tortillas (you get two and you need them because you'll fill them both!) were delicious. My only complaint is that the Bean Dip was very soupy and I prefer not to drink my dip, lol. The queso blanco, however, was excellent - creamy and thick, the Bag of Chips thin and crispy and the guac was chunky and nice, full of flavor. I appreciate when restaurants put hot food in foil containers because when I can't finish something it's nice to pop it into the oven for a reheat. read more

Had lunch at El Toro today. The restaurant is very dated. Our table wobbled up and down if you put any weight on it. I had the Burrito San Jose lunch. I thought it was ok but I was surprised that it did not come with rice or beans on the side. It was just a big burrito on a plate. I guess the beans and rice were in the burrito. I believe this restaurant gets more of a 3.5. Its hard writing reviews when taking into consideration COVID precautions. We got our menus and they were wet. I assumed it was sanitizer but our server was not able to confirm. They had taken some tables out to make sure they were in line with reduced capacity so kudos to that. I ordered the queso fundido. The best part about this appetizer was that there was so much chorizo in the queso and the chorizo had a lot of flavor. Definitely one of the better queso fundidos I have had. I ordered the fajitas tropical as my main dish. The fajitas included pineapples and the dish came out in a hollowed out pineapple instead of the usual sizzling skillet. Definite bonus points for that. The downside is that they put so much pineapple in it it drowned out all other flavors. I found myself picking out pineapple just to taste the meat. The side dish had a table spoon of rice and a table spoon of beans. Smaller portion of rice and beans than I am used to. There were highs and lows of El Toro but I wold eat there again for a quick lunch as the service was very fast. read more

I'm from Arizona and while I know that MN isn't really the place to expect great Mexican food, I keep trying. I will say that of the places I've tried so far, this is one of the better ones, although I wouldn't call it good. We were greeted and seated very promptly. The initial waiter didn't really speak English so the drink order was a tad confusing but that's no problem. I took it as a good sign. I ordered a Chile relleno and a bean and cheese burrito. I judge Mexican food establishments on their retried beans and tortillas. The relleno was just ok. It was a real chile and not canned but there was some sort of cheese sauce inside that absolutely does not belong. The waiter asked if I would like red sauce on my burrito and I said yes. Much to my disappointment it was tomato based. I've never encountered a tomato based red sauce ever. It was like spaghetti sauce. I expected enchilada sauce which is usually what is put on an enchilada style burrito. The beans were bland, no flavor. They didn't taste canned though so that's a good thing. The salsa was pretty good but the chips were bagged type. There was also a little bowl of something white served with the salsa. I assumed it was queso. It was actually some sort of sweet ranch type dressing. Weird. If you're from MN you will probably really like this place. If you're from somewhere where authentic, flavorful Mexican food is what you're used to, keep going. read more

This has been my family's go to Mexican restaurant since I was a little kid. The staff there is so kind and always want to make your time at El Toro special! As I said I have been coming here for years and my order has changed. When I was younger I would get the taco salad in the crispy tortilla bowl which was so good! Now my go to is either fajitas or grande burrito. The rice and beans here are outstanding. When you walk in there are beautiful tile details along with murals on the walls. This place used to be be good from a food and service point. Unfortunately it doesn't seem that there's much care put into either anymore. Our family used to make a handful of trips there up until a few years ago about when the food and service just took a dive down. The service I could deal with as sometimes we would order to go anyways. The food is another thing lol and there's no let up on that, it's just disgusting now or at least the last 3 times ordered. Picked up dinner tonight and it was just as delicious as dining in. Not only are the portions huge they are authentic! Every order was accurate and sealed well! The manager recognized my husband and continued to make him feel welcome. My husband walked in to pick up order and noted that the interior was extra clean. Ate here on the recommendation of the friends that I was visiting. The food was pretty solid, but the red sauce on my burrito was a tad bit watery. However, all the food tasted fresh--a crispy shell around the taco and the rice had good flavor to it. The unlimited chips and salsa was also a nice touch; the salsa had a nice zing to it. I would have given four stars, but my server got "distracted" (during my 2PM visit, with very few other patrons in the restaurant) and charged my card the full amount instead of splitting the bill like we had requested. After hearing that servers begrudge doing separate tickets, I thought I would extend the courtesy of telling them just to split the check. This was obviously a mistake and I will return to asking for split checks in the future. read more

A friend and I came here after visiting the horse racing track and casino somewhat by it. When pulling up, I was a little sketched out by the exterior, but we went in because of the reviews on yelp! We were promptly seated, and ordered a large queso. (They did not have a medium size) it was $7, which I thought was a little high, but we were impressed with the taste! It was safe to say it was the best queso we've ever tasted. I got 3 tacos, which were a little pricy at $2.75 a taco, and I also got fries which were $3.39 for a small plate of fries! I thought this was very expensive, but the food tasted like authentic Mexican. My friend got chicken fajitas and he was very impressed. My family ordered a DoorDash order from this restaurant, and we ordered 4 meals. When our food was delivered one of our meals was missing. My husband contacted the restaurant and they stated that it wasn't their problem, as we ordered from DoorDash. My husband didn't get his meal, nor did they try and rectify this situation. Also, very rude when we tried to tell them our food was not correct. Do not order from them, they steal your money and don't give you the food you ordered. I ordered a dinner combo (enchilada and taco) and my boyfriend ordered chimichangas. The hard shell taco was super soggy which made for a super unappetizing portion. Having spent 55 years of my life in California, I am spoiled when it comes to Mexican food. I was delighted to find El Toro, as they serve authentic cuisine that actually has some flavor and texture. In fact, their food is delicious, starting with the salsa and chips. While I would like a bit more heat in everything I tried, I understand the local palate and am quite happy to add some hot sauce on my own. We brought in a party of 13 including my in-laws and a handful of kids after a hot day at Valleyfair. You have to understand that my in-laws are real meat and potatoes folk who normally blanch at the sight of anything green on their plate. Thusly, I was a little nervous making the decision to go to an untested-by-me Mexican venue. When we arrived at El Toro, it was just before the normal dinner hour so it was mostly empty and there was definitely room for our large party, but our wait staff was very eager to accommodate us. I'd have to say the service was excellent (5/5)- our waiter was very friendly and right on it every time a drink needed to be refilled, or when my baby girl spilled water everywhere - and the chips and salsa were kept constantly full, despite our best efforts to keep them empty. Food - great (4/5). I'm from California and El Toro has some legendary competition in my schema of restaurants Mexican, but this is some of the best Mexican food I've had since moving to the midwest. The salsa was great (4/5 - wasn't quite hot enough to rate a 5), and I was able to sample a few plates from around the table. I can't remember the names of most of them, a few were standard Mexican-American fare, tacos, enchiladas, quesadillas, and a few were the larger entrees (steaks, etc). All were prepared well and were very tasty. Arroz y refritos (rice and beans) with mine were okay (3/5), a little dry for my taste, but satisfying. Prices were about where you'd expect and the portions were generous - nobody went home hungry! Overall I give the food 4/5 because it really was good and didn't detract from my experience, nor that of the picky group I was with. Ambiance (4/5) - It was relatively clean and COLD as there was an A/C vent blowing right on us. You have to understand that it was 92 muggy degrees outside and having been in the sun all day riding rollercoasters, that was just what a couple of us needed. Now, a few in my party would disagree and they actually went outside to warm up a bit, but this is my review, not theirs, so cold = good. Overall, I'm going to give El Toro a 5 star review. It really deserves 4.5, but as far as Mexican in the midwest goes it was a great experience - you should definitely stop here, I know we will again. read more

My review before I entered the restaurant tonight: One of my favorite Mexican restaurants in the area! Food is always really good and service has never been anything but great! Tonight: Our food was mediocre at best. Our children's food was promptly served, however they were long finished with their meals when we had to start asking where ours were. Almost twenty minutes difference between our meals ad out kids meals was awkward. Our server could have cared less. Asked for the bill as at this point we were now running late and it never showed up. Finally we just handed him the credit card to run and had to get our food to go. No apology from the waiter, nothing. I think this was the last time I will be coming here. Update: a few hours after leaving El Toro I'm changing my review from three stars to one after getting food poisoning! Bad service and mediocre tasting food is nothing compared to spending your evening puking it back up. Never again will I frequent this restaurant! It used to be one of our favorite place to go. Because El Toro is fairly close to home we have given them like 5 chances. Each time I am completely underwhelmed. The menu has about 500 choices and none are good. The food is actually WATERY and flavorless. It also doesn't seem that clean. The portions are big, so it would be good for anyone who wants a lot of bland food. Had the enchilada supreme which consists of 4 enchiladas: 1 bean, 1 cheese, 1 beef, and 1 chicken. The first 2 were very good but the later I would pass on. Not good. This is NOT authentic Mexican food. I live in Chicago and came to visit my friend who lives in Chaska. After reading yelp reviews we decided to go out for authentic Mexican food. Now I've never been to a Mexican restaurant that doesn't offer steak in their burritos or tacos. This was the first bad sign. Then I tried to customize my order by asking for specific ingredients to not be in my order.(I asked for my order to be plain. Just meat, sour cream, and cheese on my burrito) while I understand this doesn't make it authentically Mexican my wish as a customer is to order how I see fit. I thought he understood me but then while we were eating chips and salsa he brought me a big bowl of sour cream. I then was confused and thought( I think he didn't understand me) ( it's true, he didn't ) so I told the guy my order in Spanish this time so he can clearly understand. My friend ordered tamales. When they came we both stared at the plate thinking ( this is tamale's?) I never seen tamales that thick ever in my life. Believe me people, I grew up next door to a Mexican family that practically adopted me. I've had several Latino lovers in my life. I've made tamales with all of them. This is not Mexican tamales. While I understand that shockapee isn't the place to be looking for Mexican food, you read some of these reviews and hear they are authentic Mexican and are enticed. You get mislead into believing this is REAL Mexican. I think maybe these reviewers think it's authentic because they can speak Spanish and the staff are Mexican. But don't be fooled. This is just one step up from taco bell... I will say though, the staff was nice and they did try hard to please us when they saw us getting disappointed left and right.
