El Charro is a decent Mexican restaurant in Farmington. When I visited it was a very busy Friday night and had to wait 45 minutes before being seated. Initially I wasn't sure if I even wanted to stay to eat, as there was heavy cigarette smoke outside the entry doors and that just kind of threw me off a little bit because it gave a "dive" feel to the restaurant and didn't really come off as family friendly. However I waited it out and finally got seated. Once seated I was able to order drinks right away, which when delivered were huge! I didn't realize there were different margarita sizes and was given the largest size which was so huge. For me, I asked if I could have a smaller drink because I didn't realize that there were different sizes (nothing listed and nothing shared by waitress). The waitress was a little frustrated it seemed but she took it back and gave me a smaller size. (I also had to ask for a water because they weren't delivered to our table.) The margarita I found to be quite sour and a little "fake" tasting compared to other margaritas I've had. Upon ordering, I asked for the Fajita Mexicana with chicken and shrimp (additional $2.99) and included bell peppers, onions, rice, beans, guacamole, pico de gallo, shredded cheese, lettuce, sour cream, and tortillas. My husband got the Alambre with chicken and with bacon, bell peppers, and onions on a bed of corn tortillas; served with rice, beans, shredded cheese, lettuce, and sour cream. We also asked if we got chips and salsa because nothing was delivered to our table yet and so the waitress came back after our order placement with those. My husband requested an additional side of Queso which was cold when delivered to our table. We had to ask the waitress to warm it because it tasted awful cold and really had limited flavor, even when warmed. When we got our meal I found my shrimp was not thoroughly cooked - still cold in areas and my husband had to pull the Alambre bacon off because that was not cooked either. I found that the overall flavoring - spices and such - was limited. There really wasn't much flavor at all and I found myself having to use quite a bit of salt and pepper, of which I normally don't do. Overall, I thought it was quite pricey and the taste of the food and drink to be a little off. I've driven pat this spot many times but tonight was my first visit. Was looking for authentic Mexican food so I knew this was the place. Pulling into the lot, I couldn't tell if the windows were tinted or if they were closed, I couldn't see the open sign until I was walking closer to the door. Welcoming atmosphere with quality service! Hooked us up with chips, guac, salsa and queso blanco that is the truth!! Split the molcajete Guadalajara with my wife and couldn't decide if we wanted corn tortillas or flour, but our server suggested the flour so that's what we went with. The food at El Charro was good, but in the middle of our service our server was FIRED. I hesitated to even include this, but it was a huge part of my experience. At the time of our visit, El Charro had only been open for three weeks. We arrived around 8pm on a Friday and decided to sit at the bar. Our server/bartender was friendly, and helped walk me though the different margaritas and pointed out several things on the menu that she recommended. We munched on chips and some disappointing watery salsa while looking at the menu. Our food was unmemorable based on what happened next. In the middle of our meal, our bartender said she had to go call her manager and would be right back. She was gone for a while and when she returned she was crying. She apologized and said she was sorry, but she had to leave immediately. We were shocked. A coworker walked up and hugged her. Once she left, the atmosphere changed. We could hear other employees talking about it in hushed tones. We were largely ignored after she left. Finally, someone showed up behind the bar and chatted with us for a minute telling us that yes, she was fired and then TOLD US WHY SHE WAS FIRED (which I refused to disclose, based on principal). Not only was she fired in the middle of our dinner, but another employee was now discussing it with us! I was stunned and still am. Our new server got our check and said "since I didn't help you, you don't have to tip me." Win? I have no freaking idea. We saved $6 and saw the hopes and dreams dashed of a very friendly woman. I 110% wish El Charro had waited until the end of my server's shift or spoke with her at the start of her shift. However, I do not know what happened - just the servers version. Perhaps something happened that could have not have waited until the end. I wish El Charro the best, however I'm extremely disappointed in how it was handled. I tried to give a star rating based on the experience without the drama and came up with three stars. I took a star off for what I witnessed. read more

I was here to celebrate a family birthday with the wife and kids. It was mid afternoon on a weekend and it was very quiet around the place so we were quickly seated. The restaurant is newer and was remodeled before opening. Given this used to be a Burger King, they've done a good job fixing the place up. They have a full bar with a menu of margaritas. They served us chips and salsa right after seating us, The chips are good, not great, and the salsa a little mild by my taste, but then I like things a little spicier. I like my salsa a little chunkier, hotter, and with stronger cilantro. I ordered the Alambre, my son, tacos, my wife a taco salad, and the girl enchiladas. The food was good. The cheese on my Alambre was odd, had a processed cheese taste to it. Everyone else liked their food. I found the food to be good, not great but good, I would like to see a different cheese used, a bit more heat in the salsa, but overall things were fine. The service was very attentive. Since there were very few people in the place we had the full attention of our server. She did a great job taking care of us. I appreciated the great job she did. read more

When I was there I was greeted instantly within entering the building. The people inside were very cheerful and I felt welcome. In my small town of Farmington in the 4 years I have lived here, I have seen around 6 different Mexican restaurants come and go. We have a limited number of restaurants to choose from, and we typically find ourselves in either Lakeville or Rosemount to grab a bite. I had been resistant to stop and try El Charro after hearing several bad first hand experiences by friends and family. Last night I finally gave in and we stopped in for a bite. We got there at 8pm (they close at 9) and the hostess at the door did not seem all that excited to seat us. There were two other families dining at the time and the bar was empty. It did turn around however, as the server was very polite and checked in with us on a regular basis. The food came out quick, maybe too quick, but I chalked it up to ours being the only order they likely had. I ordered the Tacos de carne asada, with a side of beans and rice. Beans and rice were your typical Mexican restaurant side you have come to expect, not bad, not really great. The tacos weren't too bad. The steak could have used some seasoning as it was pretty bland, but one thing they do not hold back on is portion size! These tacos were loaded with A LOT of meat. So much in fact that adding my lettuce, cheese, and pico de gallo was difficult due to the lack of space in the tortilla. NOT a bad problem to have, and two tacos were enough to satisfy my large appetite. I will likely give this place another shot, in hopes of maybe a little more flavor. read more

This place was a swing and a miss. We had wanted it to be good, as Farmington has had a few Mexican restaurants but they never stay for the long haul. We went on a weekday evening and it was not a busy night, so we were seated pretty quickly. First to come were 2 glasses of water and some very greasy, cold and stale chips accompanied by very watery and flavorless salsa. I ordered the carnitas street tacos and when asked if they had corn tortillas he said they don't - which is pretty rare if you are staying authentic to real street tacos. When my order arrived, the tortilla soft shells were soaking wet from sitting in a puddle of grease on the plate. My food was covered in shredded American cheese, lettuce and more watery salsa - not I expected for street tacos - which the server said was very authentic Hopefully it gets better with time, but the food needs a major overhaul read more

I am writing this as I sit with a stomach ache. Work found me in Farmington and son wanted a chicken burrito. I show up a few minutes before 3 and can still order from lunch menu. First impressions of the paper cups on top of liquor bottles should have been my cue. I ordered a chicken burrito and a chicken and chorizo mix up with refried beans and rice that came with some tortillas. I am told 10 minutes. Another patron was at the bar, no-one else inside. I pay and notice a 50 cent takeout charge. Really? I left a $1.00 tip because he just brought out a bag. The good: son liked the burrito. The bad: refried beans and Mexican rice had no flavor. The chorizo sausage and chicken was mixed together. I ate only half and don't feel good. Now son wants me to get a Chicken burrito next time I'm in Farmington. I should have asked to try it.The prices are high at $9 something and I've had better Mexican. Now to take some pepto. read more

This place is just average. I got a beto burrito which had chicken and chorizo. I thought it was pretty good. My wife got some seafood dish. Wish I remembered the name and will update the review if I ever go back with it (unlikely). It was a specialty dish but didn't taste special at all. It was advertised as spicy but our kids (whom are picky with spicy) had no problems eating it. It was nothin special and would definitely not order it again. We ordered the kids a soft shell taco which was good and a cheese quesadilla which was not very good. A cheese quesadilla ... how do you not make that good? Well, I found out! Not have the cheese fully melted and the tortilla still be soft and not slightly crispy. The service was also average. Had to grab the waiters attention a couple times. Didn't really get water refills. Now that I write this I'm thinking service really wasn't that good. This place is good enough for me to go to if I'm craving Mexican and don't want to drive far. Me and my family have been going to El Charro for years now, and it's our favorite Farmington restaurant. I have been going here for my birthday every year since they have opened as well as gone to their previous restaurant, Big Sombrero. From my understanding, you may enjoy this place more depending on the service provided, but my family has always had a good time. Depending on how busy it is, we get our food fairly quick. You will automatically get free chips and salsa, but my family always orders queso (cheese dip), which is my absolute favorite thing there, and I recommend trying it! I'm also a fairly picky eater, and I've always ordered really simple things, like a quesadilla with fried rice. Even with the simple stuff I order, I love it! My family is more adventurous than me, but love the food they order too! read more

I had to only give 3 stars because of the last meal I ordered take out. We ordered the Mexicans which was supposed to be a ribeye type meat that comes with rice and beans and tortilla's. The meat was so fatty and horrible I should of instantly called and complained, how disappointed I was with this meal, (I didn't) I can't believe they would actually put this in a box for take out. Most of the tough meat and grisle went to our dog. We also ordered the philly cheesteak burrito or enchilada's. They weren't as bad but still I wouldn't order again. We paid 28.00 for a horrible meal. We have both eaten inside the restaurant before and ordered the chimichanga, we know they have good food because we have had it in the past. The service has always been friendly too. So I am glad we have had a good meal there before this meal or we would of been a one and done for this restaurant.
