Amazing Dominican spot in Tampa! It's cafeteria style and they have so many options- everything looked fresh. The baked chicken and the roasted pork were really flavorful and tender! We got rice and beans, mac salad and the avocado salad as sides which were also solid. Prices were super reasonable and we had enough food for a second meal. Casual dominican restaurant offering delicious typical dishes. Every time I visit Tampa, I try to pass by Tipico and pick up lunch. There are many Latin places in Tampa to pick up some food but I found this place to be one of the best ones in the area. The food is simply delicious! They cook with sazón for sure. Also, the restaurant is always clean and organized. The staff was friendly and bilingual. They offer daily specials and family meals. Some of my favorites are the mangu, majado de viandas, avocado salad, codfish salad, stew pork chops, baked chicken and rice with beans. Everything I tried so far is been delicious. Portions are good and prices are reasonable. They have so many delicious options to choose from that it is difficult to make a decision. One good combo to share with a group is combo #1 which includes fried cheese, fried chicken, longaniza sausage and tostones with a 2 litter Coke for about $20. It was good for 4 to 5 people. I had also ordered a few of the other family combos when I have my family over and it works out great. Everyone enjoys it every time. For dessert, I always get the coconut flan. It is just the right amount of sweetness to finish a perfect lunch at Tipico Criollo. This is absolutely a great casual place to pickup some real Latin food for you and the family. read more

I have ate here 6 times. It's my go too lunch spot when I'm at work. Food is always ready just place your order from the many options I f meat, Sides and salads. My favorite is the fish and avocado salad. It taste the same overtime. The rice is a hit and miss, on some days it's dry. When the rice is good I ts good. First time. I've been looking for GOOD Puerto Rican food. I ordered a side of green bananas. They were delicious. I also got a pulled pork with black rice and yucca. The pork was so flavorful. This place is so good! We recently found it. It's so sad we passed right by it for over two years!! The location is not the best, it's in a shopping center off Memorial on your way to Veterans Express. But the restaurant itself is very clean. It's cafeteria style hot food. Im Dominican and I most definitely know what's supposed to be going on. This place is good. I wouldn't go as far to say that the food is fresh but, it's delicious. The food is made then stays out in the open so that customers can choose what they want on their plate. Don't fear, the food is made well. Their natural juices are amazing and can either be made with milk or just water based. If you're on the healthy side, get the water based juice. The yuca con cebollas are divine and so is everything else. I highly recommend this place if your out for lunch on a date, from work or simply craving a good bite. read more

I was told to come here after complaining to a Dominican guy I met that I'm so mad that Mangu in Brandon closed down and that was THE best Dominican food in Tampa Bay although there are several Dominican restaurants nearby. Well, El Tipico Criollo is no Mangu Cafe, but it's very good Dominican fare. HubbyStanks is Dominican. My mother in law and sis n law cook really well, but they aren't going to teach me anything (we'll just leave it at that), so I just figure it out...and although I haven't mastered every Dominican dish out there, the ones that I can cook, Sancocho, Mangu, Dominican Pastelon, etc. etc. I make very well. So, I'm picky when it comes to Dominican food. For the items I don't cook or if I am too lazy, I hope for a great restaurant with decent prices to fill in where I lack the skills (or the time to figure it out). There was a convenience store on Waters that served Dominican fare, but it got bought out by who we assume is a non-Dominican Hispanic. El Tipico so far is the closest Dominican spot to my home that can fill that void. I had the chivo guisado (goat), mangu, rice and beans and avocado salad. All of it delicious. Only reason this doesn't get a 5 star is because I now rate every Domincan restaurant against Mangu Cafe and it was like Mangu Cafe was adding a bit of crack to everything because it was out of this world good! El Tipico is a solid choice, however. It's also better than all the Dominican restaurants I've tried in the Town and Country area. Ordering is easy because all the food is laid out on a line in front of you, so you can see what everything looks like. I haven't eaten in, but I picked up my to-go items during lunch and there was plenty of seating as well as outdoor seating and the seats were filled. The staff is nice, but more of a no nonsense, what the heck do you want and I'll give it to you kind of nice, but you better know what you want...I may just feel that way because I don't speak Spanish. Mangu Cafe spoiled me because they were one of the few Spanish establishments in the same category that had customer service down! I know I keep talking about Mangu Cafe and I heard that they were trying to make a comeback...until then I can live with El Tipico Criollo. This place is a bit in the cut off of Memorial. You can see the restaurant from Memorial, but it's easy to miss if you're not actually looking for it. I want to go back and try other items, like pollo guisado (chicken), rabo (oxtail) and sancocho (national dish meat stew only served on weekends). read more

I am so happy a coworker recommended this place to me. I am always skeptical when people tell me they know or have been to a Dominican restaurant. I am Dominican and every place I have had the opportunity to check out here is actually either Cuban or some Dominican hybrid/fusion; there is nothing wrong with this but sometimes I just want tipico (typical) Dominican dishes. This place is not exactly close to home but it just so happened I would be in the area that weekend so I decided on the way back home I would pick up some food for my honey and I. The place was easy enough to find using my GPS. It is located in a little strip mall, I believe there was also a barbershop and laundry mat in the plaza. When I walked in and checked out the menu and the spread before me I was very excited. Dominican staples! Including Dominican bizcocho (cake) and natural fruit juices. I was in a bit of a rush and honestly not 100% convinced the food would be good. I decided to do 2 lunches which included rice, one meat, one side and beans of choice. My lunch was white rice, pernil (pork), maduros, and lentejas (lentil). For my honey I got him white rice, pollo guizado, maduros, and habichuela roja (red beans). I was tempted to also get some empanadas, some Dominican cake, a juice- especially the morir soñando (a juice which translates to die dreaming), but I decided I should give this food a try first and if its good I could come back. Well I'm happy to report I cannot wait to get back! This is as close as it gets to Dominican food in Tampa. Now don't get me wrong my mom has them beat on the white rice but the pernil, oh my god that pernil! It was so moist and juicy- even the next day after heating it in the microwave! My honey said his food was really good too and even ate all his left overs. This will never be your Dominican moms' or aunts' home cooking but its also not the Dominican restaurant food that's jeopardized some of its flavor due to the mass quantities they have to make. This place is not a fancy place, but it does have standard seating. I would eat lunch here or take to go. It does not seem they have servers, you order at the counter where the food is behind glass, buffet style, and then you pay at the end of the counter.
