I hate I don't have better things to say about this spot that we were really excited to try. I will say that upon arrival, everything seemed to be going fine. The owner greeted us at the door, it was fairly empty so there was no wait and we were seated right away. The ambiance is nice. It does look like you've stepped into the VIP area of a restaurant, so it was cute -- not fancy, but cute. The owner then told us about the restaurant being inspired by his mother, they've been around for 10 years, explained the menu etc., it was nice. He also told us that he hadn't been to Jamaica since a kid and that raised an eyebrow -- but we let it go because he wasn't the cook. MIND YOU, I brought my cousin here (who is Jamaican) after seeing decent reviews about it. He brought over our first round of drinks and they were really good. We really enjoyed them. They weren't strong at all, tasted like juice. So I would recommend just getting juice instead of the +$5 to add rum. As we began to order and look at the menu, the prices were really HIGH, but I guess he was going for upscale cuisine -- so we said OK, let's see what this entails. We all ordered the Taste of the Island plater that gave an oxtail, curry goat and jerk chicken, rice and peas, plaintains and a tiny side salad. I wasn't mad at the portions given, but the flavor didn't hit the mark at all. NOW LETS GET INTO THE FOOD The Jerk Chicken was OVERLY spicy; we couldn't even enjoy the flavor. The oxtails were fatty, sweet and BLACK. Not enjoyable at all. The goat was OK, but not very flavorful in my opinion. The beef patties were good, but probably out of a box. The Roti was good and the oxtail dipping sauce was good. The Honey BBQ Wings were pretty good and cooked well. The Mac'n'Cheese -- DO NOT GET THIS. It literally has NO taste and reminded me of the cup mac'n'cheese that you put the powder cheese in. It took so long to bring it out, I guess he kept forgetting about it (they said everything is made to order) -- which, IDK how you make mac'n'cheese to order. Real cooks know, Mac n cheese is NOT a 5-minute made to order meal. He also didn't ask how we enjoyed the meal -- which I felt like he knew what we knew when he saw that not only did the other table leave a plate full of food (the meats) but our plates resembled the same -- he still collected his coin. There is a 20% gratuity that is added on at the end that is ridiculous considering the prices are already so expensive -- MIND YOU, it is not "Elevate Cuisine", its basic Jamaican dishes on Ikea plates. No special plating, no unique sauces or display, no chef's plating or anything. Just a plate of food. Everyone's bill came in over $100. The table nearby us order the same thing and inquired whether or not we liked our food, but we'd just gotten our food and hadn't tried it yet -- we did warn them about the chicken being spicy, but not everything else. They came after us and left before us and left everything on the plate except the rice and peas. 1st time here and wanted to check it out with a few friends of mine. So I decided to do so without a reservation. We went and see a a few ppl we know and said hello. After looking at the menu we decided to possibly change due to the price but we decided to stay and see what the hype and rating were all about. We decided to just order the wings since as we can all share them and they were the simplest thing on the menu. So we ordered some and couldn't believe that 2 dressings off the menu they didn't have so we took the jerk, mango habanero and honey bbq. They came with the drinks soon and the foot shortly after. We realized that 2 young kids were also at the restaurant which let us know ow for sure that's it's small and family owned. We ate and saw that everything is 20% gratuity already added. So we tipped anyway and left. The food and patties, along with coco bread was good but definitely way too overpriced. Listen... I was praying to God that the reviews wouldn't apply to me, but it happened. We traveled from MI. Walked here from Hyde Park just for some calorie burning exercise to get here and be met with a dark restaurant. This is the second time in Tampa that wr have tried to have Jamaican cuisine only to be disappointed. Another couple was at the door right before us and was also baffled because they drove 30 minutes to get here. This business really needs to do better. Update your hours of operation. The jerk wings were delicious! We had the oxtail and the Caribbean chicken sampler platter. The oxtail was truly fall-off-the bone and very delicious! The Caribbean chicken sampler platter had curry chicken, jerk chicken, and brown stewed chicken. The star of the plate was the brown stewed chicken. There was a tiny little salad for crunch, a couple of fried plantains, and rice. The rice needed some salt or something. Maybe it was a little overdone. This was a bittersweet experience. I am a Caribbean native so I try to support island cuisine even though I can cook it myself. Decided to try Yah Mon one evening with my family which consisted of my 2 year old. When we seated, I took out my child's sippy cup and was immediately told "no outside food or drinks". This was a sudden turn off. You never hear such ridiculous rules in other restaurants with the exception of Caribbean restaurants. Such antiquated thinking. The restaurant is supposed to be upscale Caribbean food but the appetizer plates were plastic and the napkins were paper. If the meals are over $30, cloth napkins and reusable plates should be standard. When it comes the food, again it is on the pricier side but it was extremely delicious. I had the Taste of the Islands entree which is perfect if you want to sample. The curry goat phenomenal, the oxtail, although only 2 pieces was flavorful. Tasty and unique! It's been a while since I had Jamaican food and I have no regrets in picking this place to satisfy that craving. Our waiter was very attentive from the moment we walked in and service like that must be acknowledged. He did a great job of describing the dishes and providing us with options. Yah Mon was a Caribbean inspired establishment; but this was not some beachside shack, not this was a tastefully appointed dining area, with dark seats, white paper table cloths & formal looking white upholstered booths. Soulful island music wafted in the air whilst a large HDTV screen showed a looping Caribbean beach scene, complete with endless soothing waves. All the art on the walls were beach or gently rolling surf scenes. A hostess stand greets you as you enter. A young man greeted me with a smile and welcomed me in finding a table by the bar. It was dinner time in a Friday, however there were only two other sets of diners - perhaps its early yet... Each table was adorned with a different sign boasting a pearl of wisdom... 'Don't count the days... make the days count'... 'Good things come to those who HUSTLE'.... I was in for an education whilst I 'chilled'... The man instructed me that the menu was online at their website. I thought that was all done with after COVID passed, but apparently I was wrong. I suspect that their demographic does not include the AARP crowd. As I called up the menu I noticed the first thing shown is a LONG disclaimer: "Kindly note that a 20% service charge will be included with each order to support the seamless execution of our services & maintain exceptional standards for your satisfaction. Most of our dishes are gluten-free, made with organic products & seasonings, & contain no MSG, artificial preservatives, fillers, hormones, antibiotics, or injections. Meals may take approximately twenty-five to thirty-five minutes to prepare and cook. Depending on demand, meals can be finished before or after the approximate time. Everything is made fresh. All sales are final; no refunds. One payment for a party of 6 or more. I gulped and the hesitatingly looked at the menu pricing... A Coke... $7. A Red Stripe (known as the cheapest beer in the islands)... $8. Entrees consisted of jerk chicken, oxtail, wild caught fish... the lowest priced Entree was $31 plus that mandatory 20%... so much for the $$ price rating on Yelp.... The fish averaged about $49 plus that 20%. I seriously considered leaving as these dollars were just not making sense to me... but the server returned and started rattling off all the tasty appetizers to get me going... Jamaican patties, jerk wings... it sounded good & quite frankly I was tired & couldn't be bothered to try and find another place. I relented and ordered a $7 Coke. I didn't even look at the appetizer prices, but rather decided on just an entree. Goat appeared, but after seeing what goats were eating on the island of Socotra, I passed. A Signature Ribeye was offered, however it stated it would be prepared Well Done only... Sacrilege!!! Who in their right mind would do that to a Ribeye?! To keep my blood pressure from climbing I opted for Janise's Jerk Chicken Pasta which was bowtie noodles and spicy jerk chicken with notes of asparagus. $35 plus mandatory 20% My server warned me it would take about 25 minutes to prepare... no worries to me as I had no place to go. My Coke arrived in a short, thin glass. Likely holding about 8 ounces. Maybe $1 per ounce... When it was delivered he tried once again to entice me into an appetizer to 'snack on' whilst I waited... I declined About 10 minutes after ordering, the entree arrived at my table; a cool 15 minutes faster than promised, making me wonder if the extended time forecast is just a ploy to get an appetizer ordered, or they have a very efficient microwave. The square white plate was nicely presented with a few small sprigs of greenery to offset the creamy pasty & blackened chicken. The taste was pretty good. Just the right amount of spice & heat for a good flavour. The chicken was just about to enter dry territory but the sauce from the pasta helped keep it in check. My Coke disappeared as I ate, but my server offered no refill... at $7 a glass (plus 20% surcharge) I guess they are barely scraping by. I finally caught his eye and asked for a glass of water, to which he tried on his upselling cap once more, trying to encourage me into a bottle of sparkling mineral water... uh, no thanks. Tap will do. The other remaining couple finished up then the server approached me with his 'checkout machine' in hand. There would be no paper receipt to preview the charges... instead he rapped a few buttons then ceremoniously presented me with the gadget, strategically navigated to the 'Tip Shaming' screen. Some of the best authentic Caribbean food I have had, hands down. I'm from Miami and I'm Jamaican so I know good Caribbean food. Period. Had the Taste of the Islands plate which included oxtail, curry chicken (typically curry goat but it wasn't ready) and jerk chicken. My husband and I found this place by the sign out by the road and decided to give it a try. We were greeted by a welcoming and charismatic man and taken to a table. The place was nice and clean but empty of customers. We were informed that the menu was only available on their website, so we took a look and ordered a Coke ($7), a Diet Coke ($7), the (8) jerk chicken wings ($15) and the coco bread ($7) to start, at the recommendation of the server. Both were a good choice. The wings were tender, fall off the bone and seasoned well with a building heat and the coco bread was fluffy and buttery. My husband then ordered the curry goat ($39) and I ordered the oxtail ($39) for our entrees. Both were tender with good flavor, but the oxtail gravy stole the show. Deep brown in color, not too much oil rendered from the oxtail fat leftover and cloves of garlicky slow cooked goodness. The curry goat was definitely lacking in our opinion, but we couldn't place what was missing, it was just a pasty, almost grainy texture, but still tender. The rice and peas and the plantains are always a good side dish. Overall, it was a nice experience and the service was top notch, as I would hope with an automated 20% tip for all checks (this wasn't told to us directly, but is on their website when you go to look at the menu). My only complaint and concern through the whole experience is that our bill should have been around $115 before 6% tax and the automatic 20% gratuity based on the advertised menu prices which would have been around $148 total max. However, we were presented with a handheld point of sale computer at the table. The server held the handheld in front of us and quickly scrolled through the receipt before proceeding to the checkout screen and setting the unit on the table. The screen displayed a $174 total on a new tip screen and the server indicated I should leave a tip if I wanted to, I quickly confirmed that the $174 total displayed included the automatic 20% or not? He confirmed it did already include the 20% and that I could just skip. I skipped, checked out, and we left wondering how the bill got to $174 so quickly. We have been to many other upscale dining experiences and spent the same for more food. I should have asked for a receipt before we left but didn't quite register that there was a TWENTY-SEVEN dollar difference between what should have been the total vs what we were presented with as the total until I double checked our math in the truck. Overall, I'm left with an uneasy feeling that we have been taken advantage of, but I hope not and encourage customers of this establishment to PAY ATTENTION TO YOUR BILL when closing out. read more

The star of the dish was the oxtail which was also very tender and flavorful. There was two in the dish. The plantains were cooked well and rice tasted homemade. The kale salad was familiar to something I buy from Sam's Club. Drink: I also tried a blueberry lemonade (alcoholic). It was very nice and tropical. As for the overall experience. Our server Andre was very polite and personable. He smiled the whole night. The food was a bit slow to come out. The restaurant is pretty small and there was not a lot of people there with us. Apparently they are in need of a few more staff. We are glad to ordered a starter. Lastly, I would say the food is a bit pricey. I scheduled a 4:30 pm reservation for my wife's and I wedding anniversary. Set up babysitters based on our confirmed reservation time as well. Arrived at the restaurant at 4:30 to find an empty and closed restaurant. I double checked the time and confirmation of my reservation, checked online to see if maybe they closed but could find no reason why they'd be closed at 4:30 when the business hours state they open at 2. AND I HAVE A CONFIRMED RESERVATION! About 5-10 minutes go by and workers pull up saying they can't open up until 5:15. You have to try this!! The location from the outside doesn't look like much but the inside is very clean and elegant. It's a small upscale Caribbean restaurant perfect for date night. I don't think I would recommend for happy hour because they don't have a bar or a large selection of drinks. The drinks they do have are fresh made with fruit and you have the option to add alcohol. I highly recommend making a reservation first. Seating is limited and there is usually one person (I believe he is the owner) waiting the tables. The menu is posted online but I ordered the Caribbean chicken meal. It included jerk chicken, curry chicken, brown stew chicken, salad and rice with peas. I also ordered a veggie Pattie. I can whole heartedly say this is probably the BEST Caribbean food in Tampa, hands down. The flavor was so deep and the chicken was so tinder. Yah Mon 10/10 definitely recommend. Drinks: passion fruit juice and Arnold Palmer Appetizer:beef Pattie, jerk wings, coco bread, and Roti for an appetizer. Entree: Caribbean chicken platter (curry chicken, jerk chicken, and brown chicken stew with rice and peas, plantain and organic salad) Everything had breath taking flavors. I made a reservation weeks ago for my boyfriend's BIRTHDAY! I found this place and thought he would love it as he's Jamaican and the food looked amazing. Got a confirmation email about my reservation confirming for tonight 11/15 at 7:45pm. We show up and they are CLOSED!!!! No one called. No one emailed. Nothing. Bad business!! So now here we are. I was surprising him with dinner in a Friday night at 8pm now where do we go? Sooooo disappointed.
