For Context about myself - This is my First! ever review about a restaurant in my 46 years being alive - I moved to America from Jamaica when I was 18 years old, I've travelled to the Bahamas, Honduras, Belize, Mexico, Cayman Islands, Trinidad - You get the picture. I can also cook very well and I enjoy trying foods from different countries and I understand every island and country prepares food differently.
When you name your food store 'YahMon' you are giving the impression to the customer that this is Jamaican inspired restaurant, FYI! this isn't Jamaican at all!
I still am unsure what kind of food this was. I could write 5 pages about this place but I don't have the time, so I'll just state the bullet points for YOU! the potential customer.
- The place had one Car Salesman type of personality guy that was the Greeter, Host, Waiter, Bartender all in one. He was the only one running around serving the tables, I did see some kids working in what appears to be the kitchen area - He appears to be the owner or had some financial stake in the business. Based on how Sales oriented he was. He was a slick talker that tried to upsell us on a Booth when I entered the STORE, said it was $399.99. A stanchion was in front of the section and some wine was on the table - as if it was a Club section, I laughed and told him no, Just a regular table would be fine.
- No menus were at the table, you had to go to his site. All the food was over $39, even the chicken dinner. We became very skeptical at this point.
- I posted a picture of my food and my reciept so you can see what I ordered. ( The Roti came after the pic was taken) we ordered 2 Beef patties, 2 Ginger Beers, 2 Waters. I didn't want any cocktails because it was overpriced. For Dinner we decided to share the taste of the Islands for $47, that had Curry Goat, Jerk Chicken and Oxtails. It came with rice and peas, I added the Mac and Cheese and Roti as a side.
- The Oxtails where soft but tasted like bottle seasoning, it was untrimmed and had the large fatty pieces.
- The Boneless bottle seasoned chicken thigh was ok, I'll give them that.
- The Curry Goat was the worst curry I've every had in my life, I'm still wondering if it was actual Goat meat or some other animal.
- The Roti was an insult to anyone that knows how 'Buss up Shot' should taste. I swear it was flour and water made like a thin Pancake, Horrible!
- The Mac & Cheese was Mediocre at best.
- The Rice and Peas had no Coconut Milk and was unseasoned
- The best thing I had was the Patty and Ginger Beer. I'm certain they got that from a real Jamaican bakery and the Ginger Beer was from island store that sells Grace Products.
I would've let everything above that I wrote slide because I have spent hundreds of dollars at terrible restaurants in my life and just said 'I'm not going back there', if I didn't like the food. Plus, I like to see another Black Man run a Business because I'm an Entrepreneur myself. But.......
This Guy came to us with a White Card Machine and told us the total was $130 and showed me NO other option but to leave 20% Tip, it even had 30% and 40%. I asked him for a receipt he advised me - 'They don't provide that, but he can send it to my email or Text it to me. I said "Text me" - I selected the 20% option because I always tip servers.
I'm pretty quick with numbers and I knew something was wrong, When I sat in my car I looked at the receipt and saw that he added a 20% Service charge to the bill and didn't disclose that to me. I was very angry and I didn't appreciate the Deception and Failure to disclose this to me. I left 2 couples eating in his "Store", I refuse to call that place a Restaurant. I didn't want to ruin there night because the store was small and I can be Rowdy if need be.
But YOU the person reading this review, Do not eat here!! Go anywhere else!! I have no affiliation with these restaurants 'what so ever' - But try "Dunn River Island Cafe or Bahama Breeze" or cook at your home. This Slick Talking guy is a Criminal and Needs to be Exposed!! read more
