Update ( I guess I forgot we ordered here before and only realized when we left the review but the food seems to be consistently bad ...dang they got us again for being so close lol) I've tried the chicharrones from this place twice now, (3 if you count 8 months ago when I forgot) and both times were a letdown. The first time, my partner picked up the order in person , we paid for a pound but got maybe 3/4 of a pound, and they were just fat with no crunch at all. They had the audacity to be bad and on top of that SHORT US. I decided to give them another chance and ordered through Uber Eats. They were still warm, so clearly fresh, but they were the chewiest, most unflavored and unappetizing chicharrones I've ever had still just full of fat. I love this place sooooo much! It has the greatest yuca sides, and I love their plantains. The hot food bar is a little intimidating for me, but the food is honestly worth it. The portions are also enormous, and I think a box is enough to feed a family. The staff here are very welcoming, and they helped me to make some menu choices. read more

I have come here throughout the years since coming to live in Florida. Food has always been tasty. One of my favorites are the pasteles. Very tasty, great flavor. I went this Friday November 21 again. I dug into my pasteles and there was a human hair in it!!! There went my ability to keep eating! Good bye Lechonera! It was nice knowing you. The restaurant doesn't look like much and while you sit there, you realize that most of their orders are out go and pick up orders by local Hispanics, but the food is really great. La Lechonera is my go-to for Puerto Rican food in Tampa. It's a cafeteria-style restaurant and they have serve dishes that are exclusive to Puerto Rico. They even serve Medalla and Coco Rico. I've been eating at La Lechonera for at least 15, possibly 20+ years and it was always a reliably tasty Puerto Rican casual restaurant. Mi Pueblo (RIP) and Casona were my 2 favorites and then came La Lechonera. But, lately, me and a few other loyal followers have found the food to have declined and not be the same type of consistently good PR food. The Rabo (oxtail), overly salty. The pernil lacking in that tasty garlicky / mojo goodness. The chicken stew...meh at best. I hope they return to their former level of very tasty dishes. A meal last week at Oasis Rotisserie and yesterday at Tropical Cuisine on Adamo & 301 confirmed to me how much La Lechonera has declined. We were in the mood for lechon and decided to try this long-standing Tampa classic! It's super casual, clean, cafeteria style and unbelievably affordable. It was obviously our first time but the staff were gracious and served us up a massive quantity of lechon, rice and beans and maduros or yucca for $10 each. Ask for the garlic sauce they have as it's fantastic. The lechon is moist, well flavored and really just right! You get your food on a tray and then eat at a table. Paying comes later, when you are finished. No hurry! Just relax and enjoy! It's not fancy nor does it have an amazing atmosphere. It does provide a huge amount of food and friendly service. This is another hidden gem that I can't be selfish with anymore. I believe this is my second visit to this establishment. OMG!! It seems they cook with love and flavor. It feels like you are back in Puerto Rico with someone's grandmother who is cooking for you. We started with the traditional Coco Rico sodas. As for the entree the oxtail which was more fat them meat as you can see in the pictures. A side of Maduros, and dirty rice and peas. The flavors when combined are delicious. We also ordered a shrimp Mofongo which was also very delicious but ordered 1 because it is made for 2 people. The only real problem is the line wait if the help isn't there you will be online a bit. But I promise you it's worth it. These are the mom-and-pop shops we should be raving about. That old traditional cooking with flavor and love that these cooks are using. The ambiance is like an old lunchroom when you would go to school back in the 80s. The decor, old history of Puerto Rico. If you love some real authentic Puerto Rican food this is the establishment to be. Kudos to LA Lechonera for giving the community some flavorful dishes. Rice looked old and I asked if it was today's rice, she Says yes. Sure enough I asked for it, and it was cold and and hard like day old rice. I asked her to warm up which she did.. but there was no fixing the rice . Alcapurrias were very good though. Unfortunately I won't be back. read more

I walked here as my husband was having an out patient procedure a few blocks down and I'm so glad I did. It was just as they opened so it wasn't busy. The decor is so cute and they were playing all the old songs I grew up listening to while cleaning the house on Saturdays with my grandmother. My Spanish is halfway to halfway decent but the ladies serving were definitely helpful and they serve more food than you can eat in one sitting. This was the worst Lechón I have ever had in a restaurant! The meat was bland, as if no seasoning. The meat tasted burnt, even though it didn't look burned. The pernil had an unusually slightly "smokey" flavor. You had to dump your own food in a bin that had a dirty flap messed with other people's food. YUK! I had to put my plate in a bus tray that was packed and over stacked. I ordered the Cuajito to go. When I got home, I tasted it and threw it out!
