As soon as I walked in, it felt like home. (I'm Dominican.) The bachata music was the perfect touch. I went on a Saturday afternoon after a hangover so I was in need of some good food! They had a variety of things out to choose from. But we ended up ordering sancocho with rice and Mangu, salami and queso frito. The man who was there was so friendly and pleasant. He literally did everything! He greeted us when we walked in, he served the food, he cooked the food, he cleaned the tables, he got our drinks and was the cashier as well! The staff is super friendly and the food was so authentic and flavorful. You walk up and order off of the buffet of food. They have lunch specials for $5.99 which includes rice, beans and a meat. If you are looking for a cheaper big eat, this would be the place. You can pick it up as cafeteria style or menu style. I was looking to have some mangu, but that is actually served for breakfast. The typical Dominican breakfast from my understanding is mangu, eggs, salami, and fried cheese. We were there for lunch, so that is not available anymore. I tried the baked chicken which came with a huge mountain of rice, a bowl of beans, sweet plantains(they were colder though), and asked for a side of fried cheese. It was alright to me. No biggie biggie. They were nice to explain everything. It was easy to speak with them and ask questions. I just did not find the food a big deal. I believe it was about $8 for this entrée and a few dollars for the two pieces of fried cheese. They have different offerings such as baked chicken, pork, beef, boiled yucca, chicharon, and sancocho(beef soup). They also have mofongo(Puerto rican plantains), shrimp, and fish. The offerings reminds me of stew type food for the most part except the baked chicken, and the shredded pork. read more

The restaurant has the two choices for the food. You can pickup by cafeteria already cook or from the menu. We have order two dishes from the cafeteria and one from the menu. The first dish is a soup with tripe, pig feet, and veggie. Most people only cook tripe soup by it own. It is good twist with the pig feet. Good soup. The second dish is a tomato base whole fish. It look awesome but it not my liking taste. Fish meat is too loose. The third dish is a cook up dish of grill steak with onion. I can hear they pound the steak at the kitchen. I like my steak grilled with no sauce. But Dominican steak has sauce on top but a bit salty. The food is average. If I choose Latin food, I would go with Cuban style bistec. First time here! After getting my nails done I was starving! This place was less than a mile away and bookmarked so I went for it. The place was quite empty for a Saturday around lunch time. They had the foods displayed so that you can choose what you want just seeing how delicious everything looks. I decided on baked chicken, rice, beans and a piece of Dominican cake called Biscocho. Everything was delicious and I ate every single ounce of it. They filled the tray up to the top so I definitely felt I got my money's worth since they are slightly more expensive than most of Spanish restaurants. They man behind the counter was extremely nice and tried to get me to try the 'flancocho' which is mixture of flan and biscocho. Next time, my friend. Next time. I'm not a fan. This place is a one trick pony in my opinion...and the one trick isn't the best: Mangu, salami, fried cheese breakfast. My husband who's Dominican is very happy with the mangu breakfast combo but I wasn't impressed because I can do better and I've had better from non-Dominican cooks. If anyone knows Dominicans or Dominican food then you know that platano (plantains) is life. I got maduro and baked chicken (an abnormally big chicken thigh which leads me to believe it was pumped with GMO's) and the maduro tasted completely off. The chicken wasn't very good and flavorful enough for me to down the hormones. I also asked for a tostada con mantequilla (pressed Cuban bread with butter) and they didn't even press it right. I had to go home and put it in my toaster for a bit so it wasn't so soggy. I usually try Sancocho if it's available, but it just didn't look good. This place has been the home to a lot of different Dominican joints. We liked it best when it was Salsarengue as the shrimp ceviche and San cocho was decent. So here in Tampa unless I cook the meals at home I don't find a spot where I live in Wesley Chapel And being 4 months prego I had to get my good share of mangu with moris sonando wow I was impressed. I found this great little Dominican restaurant, named Sabor a Merengue, located in a shopping plaza along Waters Avenue, right near the intersection of Hanley Road. I knew that Dominican cuisine features Mofongo, which is a Puerto Rican dish made with fried plantains as its main ingredient. Plantains are picked green and mashed with salt and water in a wooden pilón (mortar and pestle). The cook produces a tight ball of mashed plantains that absorbs the flavors of the vegetables, meats, and seasonings. Most dressings and mixtures include broth, garlic, and olive oil. It was my plan to order some Mofongo for lunch, until I saw all of the steam table daily specials. Dominican cuisine is new to me, but I saw a lot of my favorite Latin & Spanish favorites, so I certainly felt right at home. Sitting out on the steam tables, they had roast pork, fried pork skin, fried pork chops, Longaniza sausages, grilled chicken, pepper chicken, garlic chicken, fried chicken, baked chicken, chicken stew......wow, the list just went on and on. The roast chicken looked fabulous as it had some of the crispy pork skin mixed in. That came with Moro de Habichuelas made with yellow rice and black beans (like a traditional moro rice). This delicious platter of food cost $8. YUM!!!! If you prefer to order off the menu, you can select many of these same items, along with appetizers, soups, Mofongo, beef, fish, seafood, desserts, and my personal favorite -- De Todo un Poco platter. That translates into a little bit of everything, and for about $25 you will be served fried beef, Spanish sausage, fried chicken Dominican-style, and salami with fried plantains. If you're a breakfast person, Sabor a Merengue opens early, and they have egg platters, breakfast sammies, and strong coffee for their customers.
