It's nice to have a good restaurant in the neighborhood. Food is good and prices are fair. I had the fish tacos which are tasty and my wife had the tamale trio and that was fantastic. Their margaritas are real good and their large draft beer is well....Huge! Great value all around. I am not even concerned about service since it has been open for about a week but it was good. We were heading into Cool Springs to do some furniture shopping for our new house and were craving Mexican food. A quick Yelp search led us to El Sombrero, where we were excited to see what all the Yelp fuss was about. Sadly, this experience was kind of a bust for us. The salsa was meh, and the chicken fajitas we'd ordered with no oil came drenched in both oil and some sort of salty, overpowering seasoning. The plates were fine, but we both agreed we wouldn't be back again. The $7.95 lunch special was a fair deal and the portions were plentiful, but they won't be luring us back anytime soon. As much as we like to support local restaurants, we both agreed that we'll head to Chuy's the next time we're in the area looking for decent Mexican food near Cool Springs - or stick with our local spots before we head out. read more

Hip Hip Hooray! A Mexican restaurant literally two minutes from my house! I love my authentic Mexican food, and I've never lived so close to a Mexican restaurant. So thankfully, ever since El Sombrero has opened it's doors in the McKay's Mill subdivision, I've been very pleased. Nice and clean on the inside, good service, and the food has been great. Salsa above average but not my favorite. Pancho's Place still is my favorite Mexican in Franklin, but El Sombrero is still a solid choice and we'll be regulars there due to convenience. read more

This is the best Mexican restaurant that I have eaten at in the Nashville area. Full menu, everything I have tried there is excellent (especially the Burrito Verde, Chicken Tortilla soup, and Entomatadas). The service has always friendly and excellent, and it has that homey, neighborhood feel to it in Mckay's Mill, which is 5 minutes from my family's house. Nothing bad that I can think of. read more

Another typical Americanized Mexican chain-like restaurant. I was hopeful that this hidden gem would surpass my expectations but judging by the decor and the same menu compared with other mexican restaurants (but a different color).... I knew the answer before I ate it. It seems like most of these restaurants stick to the same menu, ordering their food from the same distributor and loading up on Pancho Villa decorations. I try nearly the identical chicken (pollo) chimichanga with the only difference being the portion of chicken, rice or beans. The sauce is sweeter than most, which is a drawback for me however the chips tasted very fresh. The entrée itself was no different than any other place. I could see myself eating here if I lived down the street but I'm not going to travel 30 minutes to eat here when I have 4 others almost identical to it in Spring Hill. It seems like one of these places opens every month and depending on location and service, they thrive or close their doors. Luckily this is the closet restaurant to the nearby neighborhood but I have a feeling if another one were to open that offers better prices but identical food, it will be a taco shell of its former glory and close. Why can't we get a different brand of mexican inspired food instead of the Taco Bell sit down eateries? Pros: If you live near it, then boom. Cons: Nothing extraordinary here. read more

It is really nice to have a good neighborhood restaurant. El Sombrero's interior is well appointed and not as garishly overdone as most Mexican Restaurants. The food is very flavorful and was cooked to perfection on our visit. There was nothing we would have changed about our meal. While the menu isn't overly creative, there are still more unique dishes than most of the other awful Mexican places we have here. That is probably a factor of the clientele. Of there was one item keeping this place from getting five stars is that there isn't a window treatment done to keep the car lights from blasting you while eating dinner. This is our go-to Mexican restaurant in Franklin. Their chips and salsa are amazing and our kids go crazy for the queso dip. I always get two beef tacos and beans and rice. I am new to the Franklin area and am constantly looking for new places to try. I have a true love for good Mexican food, and though we normally find our way to a Las Palmas, I was short on time for lunch and decided to try El Sombrero. I wont say that I was disappointed, but I was not particularly pleased or impressed either. On the upside, the food was a to-go order. It was hot and ready when I picked it up. The staff was a little slow, however. I ordered my food at least 20 minutes before I arrived and they still were "making it" when I showed up. The price is fair for what you order. The menu is pretty much like any other Mexican restaurant you will see. I ordered the two enchiladas, taco and rice. The enchiladas tasted fine--just fine. The cheese was not melted all the way, but the sauce made up for it. The rice was perfect. The taco was the best part. They do pre-wrap them in foil however, so I can see how they can easily become mushy in a short amount of time. The meat was tasty and not salty (beef), and the cheese is great. The true downside was only the salsa and chips. The chips are hard store bought corn chips that have no true flavor and poor texture. The salsa is SO BLAND. I have never had salsa that bland before! It had no flavor, must be store bought. Also watery. I will say that the convenience and location is what will keep El Sombrero open. It definitely is not the taste. I will probably stick to Las Palmas or Chueys next time that I want some "decent" mexican food. read more

Not the best. Basic tacos have no flavor and the taco meat tasted like browned hamburger with no seasoning. The shrimp tacos were equally as tasteless and served with a soupy mayo slaw. Really? Mayo slaw with Mexican shrimp tacos is a bad idea. We won't be back much better options around. read more

This is the closest restaurant to my home, so of course I was delighted when it opened. Mexican is one cuisine I can eat several days in a row and not get tired of it. When they first opened everything was awesome. But I will admit there had been a slight decline in service and even in food quality. We kind of slowed up on going there for a bit. But I have to tell you in the last several months we have been there weekly! I have not ever sent anything back or had anything come out cold. The wait staff are very friendly and attentive. Recently I had a dinner party at my house for 50 people. I had them cater. We had chicken & beef fajitas, rice, beans, chips & salsa, cheese dip, tortillas & all the toppings. It was awesome! Everyone loved it and it was really affordable. It was however a ton of food. PROS: * Decent Mexican food at an affordable price, plus it is close to home. * Something on the menu for everyone. * They Cater! CONS: * Well it's TN so sitting in the bar is almost always 1-2 tables with small children at them. (not all children behave in public) * Can get a little loud at times. Love this place and so do my kids age 8-21. Having lived in Arizona for most of my adult years, good authentic Mexican food is hard to come by. Along with Pueblo Real this is my fave. Only wish someone here made green corn tamales. Only disappointment has been the chile rellenos. Sorry and not good. Otherwise it's good. Shredded chicken anything is excellent and flavorful. We are new to the area and decided to try to neighborhood Mexican restaurant. BIG mistake! We didn't know if we were supposed to wait to be seated or seat ourself, so we waited...a couple of minutes before we were even noticed. The chips were stale, the salsa was runny, the (alcoholic) drinks almost tasted watered down. When we got our food, my little one's taco was somewhat warm, but cooled very quick to the point that she refused to eat it. My husband's food was also not hot like it should have been. We were never offered a refill of our drinks and we had to stop our server to ask for the check. Poor service. Mediocre food, but it seemed like a great place to sit and chat (as long as you didn't want to eat or drink anything). read more

If you've ever been to San Diego, this Mexican food will be a disappointment. The taco shells differed from the chips. If you're going to fry your own chips, why buy store bought taco shells. I have no idea what they were doing with their cheese enchiladas. It tasted like marinara sauce that they tried to "mole" up. The cheese didn't melt. On the outside of the enchilada it melted but on the inside it stayed firm. The salsa was something that my mom gave me when I was 5 because she thought anything hotter might be too hot (it wasn't then and isn't now). The fajitas weren't half bad, just didnt wow us. The refried beans, guac (I was expecting it mixed with sour cream to lighten the taste but it actually had a spice or two and no sour cream) and sour cream (they use crema in San Diego) were good. If your from So Cal, I'd suggest getting a bag of chips, beans, guac and sour cream and call it a day. And if your local, stick with burgers and bbq or pay the $300 round trip to San Diego to get some good authentic Mexican food. To be fair, I know why they probably do this. Spices and heat in the middle of Tennessee, is probably not going to go well. There'd probably be 50-1 star reviews calling the food too hot and too spicy. I know you have to cater to your clientele but if you're going to call yourself a Mexican restaurant, at least try to be authentic. No store bought taco shells, use shredded beef or if you're going to use ground beef, don't mix it with whatever that was. The cheese in the enchiladas should melt and be gooey. Try and make an actual mole sauce. The salsa should be spicy. Based on my tongue and what I'm used to, I'd give 0 stars. But since I know what they're doing (which is good to make money but wrong to bring people fake Mexican food ala Taco Bell even if that's what they want), I'm going to give a 3 because that's inline with the overall review of this restaurant. read more

C- Mushy fish, marinated in mostly lemon, not lime per the menu "Street Tacos" C These are tacos but not street tacos. 1 tortilla and they fell apart. Carnitas C Nice try but tough and dry. Beans. 3.5 actually. I'm not a big fan of Mexican food typically; but ended up here at lunch time today and was very pleased. Especially nice is that this restaurant is in McKays Mill in Franklin. I'm doing a project at the hospital and it took less time to get out to McKay's Mill than it would have to wade through Carothers or the Cool Springs area for lunch. The food was delicious! I had shrimp tacos...very fresh, good sized shrimp. The slaw served with them was tasty without being doused in mayo..kind of unusual but so good. Chips, fresh salsa and yummy guac. Nice looking full bar too, but we're not allowed to have drinking lunches anymore so that part will have to wait. Will definitely be back! Oh...and the service was polite and friendly. My husband and I love this place. We get terrific service, and the food never disappoints. While my husband gets the same entree every visit, I have been much more adventurous. I particularly enjoy the Tortilla Soup, which is thick with bigs chunks of tender chicken. I am also very fond of the various seafood offerings, particularly the shrimp dishes. Tried once before and felt it was a pretty decent place - 2nd visit was a major turn off - service was excruciatingly slow - our party consisted of an infant and although I ordered. my food immediately it was well over 45 minuted to get our plates - didn't order anything crazy : one taco ( soft) one enchilada , rice and beans ???? the restaurant was not busy but the staff seemed overwhelmed . So, my son and I were there last evening (1/5/19) and never had such bad service and food. 1st, the waitress, when I placed the order i forgot to mention I wanted corn shells - shortly after placing I got her back to ask for corn shells - her response was "I already placed the order and did select corn anyway". 2nd, when the food came - not impressed at all - the chicken was EXTREMELY dry, no lettuce or cheese but did have lots of onions. Again, got her attention, informed her of my concern and her response was "those are Mexican tacos". Really - Never returned to refill drinks nor see how were were doing - I am not a naysayer and this one bad experience has turned me away from here out of convince to go else where. We just moved to Franklin, & as we are from California, we had little hope of finding good Mexican food this far East. I'm happy to say we have! El Sombrero's menu is large & varied. It's authenticity can compete with any CA restaurant. My test for a Mexican place is to order cactus. They provided a perfect grilled cactus pad, sliced attractively. They also have a dish called "Molcajete Special" served in a hotter-than-heck stone bowl that keeps sizzling for 30 full minutes. It was delicious. The restaurant is located smack in the middle of a neighborhood, you'll think you're in the wrong place. It's easy to miss, but worth looking for! read more

Been several times, even took dad here for fathers day. Nice little place, Service is excellent. Server was at my table less than ten minutes after I ordered apologizing for the delay and I didn't even think there was one. Food came out shortly after that. They have a big menu and big portions. They have a lot of offerings I havnt seen at other places. Food was is very flavorful and the price is right too. Soo much better than the place close to the house I have been going too.
