We stayed at Lionshead, so we naturally had to try El Sabor, which is in the same building. I definitely recommend the patio in the summer- fantastic view overlooking the ski lift and Gore Creek. As far as the food- I ordered the Agave chicken sandwich. It is supposed to have a spicy habanero slaw. It came drenched in sticky Agave, and very little noticeable heat. The chicken was good and had good breading. I'd probably recommend toning down the agave and adding a few extras to make the sandwich really pop. The fries were good- waffle style, and well seasoned. Came with a very small portion, could've used some more. As far as the service- we had a new waitress- it was her first day, so don't want to give her a hard time, as she got a few things backwards. We ordered the chips and queso, elotes, bacon burger, Mahi Mahi tacos, carnitas tacos and chicken tacos. Our server Saul was amazing! Super friendly, helpful and made some great recommendations. To start we got our chips and queso right away, which we were so happy about because we were so hungry. The elotes were amazing! So much flavor and came out nice and fresh. One night I picked up some nachos from there because we're staying in the same building and it was good enough to carry us through dinner. Last night, we stopped in to say hello to some friends who were having dinner there with their grandchildren, but we didn't eat. My wife, however, spotted something on the menu called "Impossible Flan Cake," and she ordered on - in Strawberry. When the waiter returned, he said they were out of Strawberry, only had Chocolate. She said she'd try it and it was pretty good. I asked the waiter to bring us one to go for our daughter. This time when the waiter arrived, he was carrying two "to go" boxes and said he found one in Strawberry and brought that as well. It seemed like a nice gesture, since he was unable to find it when it was ordered. HOWEVER... when I got the bill, it turned out that they charged me for the extra flan that I did not order. The people we were with said to complain, but I didn't want to make a fuss. As I was thinking about it this morning, it seemed like really bad form to me. The Strawberry Flan should have been comped, since that was what my wife originally ordered. In any case, you don't bring out two desserts when only one was ordered, acting like you're being gracious, and then charge for both of them. What do you think? read more

We met friends for dinner last night. Let me tell you the good, the bad, and the ugly of El Sabor. The Good - patio -- great view and place near where kids can run around safely - brussel sprouts -- a refreshing side choice at a Mexican restaurant The Bad - the food - mediocre at best. We all found our entrees (tacos and enchiladas) extremely bland and without flavor. The Ugly - When checking our bill, we noticed the waiter rang up all our kids' sodas at the regular price, not free and included with their kid meal orders. When asked about the additional $9, erroneous charge the waiter simply replied with a chuckle, "Most people don't even notice." There are two other Mexican restaurants in Vail. They had a line to get in which led me to believe it would be better than it was. The chips and queso were a decent size portion and very good. I ordered the avocado tacos for my meal- they were ok. I also have no idea on the quality or taste as again defrauded at this point. I am not happy one bit and hate to say this but will be showing up tomorrow to talk with a manager. Update: Manager gave me a refund at least. Still will not order from here ever again. The issue is a bug or feature with their online ordering system. It will display the pick up time based off your device setting date time and not show or state what the Mountain Time pickup is. This should be fixed or addressed ASAP as more customers will order online and not always have their devices updated to the correct time zone. This could have been a great weekend. I read the reviews of this place and I was excited. The place looked pretty busy and the food looked great. My group walked in and we were told to grab a seat anywhere. There were seven tables outside but they were all dirty. The bartender told us that someone would be around to clean the tables if we wanted to sit outside. We decided to just sit inside as they looked busy. The waitress greeted us and was super welcoming. When we tried to order drinks, she told us that they were almost out of everything but tequila. Ok, tequila is fine but everything but the house margarita and Modello Negro is what they had. Then she let us know they only had chicken, or carne asada for food. She then let us know they would be closing for six weeks. We asked why they would be open then if the didn't advertise a limited menu. She told us "Please tell my GM that!" We told her we would gladly ask. She grabbed her GM and brought him to the table. We asked why they were open if they had a limited menu? The GM responded with I didn't want to throw food away and you guys are welcome to leave. We responded with, that's a great attitude. He then told us that we could leave and eat somewhere else and clearly we haven't ever managed a restaurant. Then he walked off to the back. The waitress turned bright red and apologized. We let her know that she was ok but speaking to people like that is not a great way to treat people. She also directed us to the owner who was at his other restaurant across the way. The sad part about this whole situation is that we all have retail food experience and multiple years of retail experience. We also are really reasonable people and would have gladly stayed if we weren't talked to the way the GM handled it. read more

Great experience for my first time at El Sabor. Greeted immediately and got to choose where we wanted to sit. Every seat has a perfect view of the mountains though. Camarones del diablo was so good. Never had it before. Has a little kick but they give you tortillas which helps the spice. I like spicy though so it was good for me. Good amount of shrimp too. Meal: we ordered el pastor tacos and Miguel's chicken enchilada. Also very good. Tacos were well flavored and that cabbage is a must. Beans and rice were great too! Wish they gave me a dollop of sour cream ha that's what other Mexicans spot give. Miguel's chicken enchilada was made very well! Wasn't expecting the mushrooms which were a great touch as well as the creamy sauce they used. The chicken tasted like shredded pork. Sooooo good. Dessert: they didn't have the fried ice cream but our waiter offered free ice cream since it was a disappointment. Thank you! Working in town during off season I understand not having all ingredients. It's just soooooo slow. So I'm sure the next time I order fried ice cream they'll have it ready for me Also everything came out less than 10 min. Really quick service! First off, I'd like to thank this establishment for being open and for being one of the few not taking reservations which allows for last-minute walkins or people such as myself who just didn't know to have plans every night. When dining in Vail, reservations are required pretty much everywhere so to have some flexibility is a huge plus. The service was amazing and the staff was very welcoming and wonderful. Being from Texas, I'm a little bit more critical when enjoying Tex-Mex or Mexican food in general which is why I had to give them a slightly lower rating because the food overall was just ok. We enjoyed a variety of different options to include the queso, impossible tacos (my meatless life), fajitas (which were a little bit more like a strip steak), and the cheese enchiladas dinner. Everything was OK, but definitely required some additional salsa all over it. The other reason to try this place is for the Tequila of which they had a really nice selection. read more

My favorite place in Vail as a vegan! This is my third year staying in Vail, and El Sabor has never disappointed. If you're vegan and have ever stayed in Vail, you know how difficult it is to find vegan options (especially a substanial meal) here. The Impossible burger and Impossible tacos (modified to be vegan) are such great options that we always come atleast a few times during each trip. The service and staff are great- I could not recommend this place anymore vegan or not. The coconut margs are out of this world also. Can't wait to come back! We are vegetarian and this place had a decent selection of tacos. We ate there a few times. The service was good. We have a 7 year old and ordered off the kids menu. While not exactly on the menu they made him grilled cheese. We went back the next day in the evening and the GM (Colby) was the cook. He refused to make a the grilled cheese. I asked the server to see if they would make the cheese quesadilla but add black beans and he said no and scolded to server for even asking him. The place was not busy. El Sabor has a five star view of the Gondola and Ski Runs. In a touristy ski town, that's like gold, people! It's convenient to ski-in or walk in from Lionshead Village, too. All we need now is some good grub. And we've got it. We had lunch here, sampled the burritos and a couple of their taco plates. All came with Spanish Rice and Refried Beans topped with crumbled Queso Fresco. So Good! My Fish Tacos, however, stood out from the rest. Fried Mahi-Mahi, Cabbage, and Steamed Corn Tortillas. It's like fancy street tacos, in the best way possible. Their chips and salsas were also a hit, what seem like house-fried flour tortilla chips and three varieties of spiced salsas, Roja, Tomatillo Verde, and CALIENTE! (The caliente was definitely HOT!) But what made me glow with happiness was their Mole Sauce. I'd been craving it for awhile, so I asked them to bring me a side of it just for kicks. Man, I positively LICKED that side dish clean. Their Mole had hints of the 30+ ingredients it takes to make a good Mole, with the strengths in this one being Adobo Chipotle, Chocolate, Raisins, and... Whatever the Mexican term for Umami was. I slopped that Mole on everything. Spanish rice? Drizzled with Mole. Refried Beans? Dunk 'em right in on the way to my mouth. Tortilla Chips? Hell yes! Fish Tacos? Yup, even those. This was our first visit to Vail for lunch. After doing some extensive research for a scenic inexpensive lunch spot in Vail, we decided on El Sabor located in the Lions Square Lodge next to the base of the Eagle Bahn gondola in Lionshead Village. The view out the window looks out at the mountain and Gore Creek. There were 2 entrances to the restaurant. One entrance was going through the Lions Square Lodge which had scaffolding all around the building. The other entrance was to dodge skiiers coming down the hill over the bridge and to walk on the snow to the outside entrance. The menu prices have actually gone down and were reasonable for Vail. The website menu needs to be updated to reflect the new lower prices. The $3.25 A La Carte menu needs to be posted on the outside of the restaurant, so skiiers can get a quick bite to eat. They have A La Carte Street Tacos, Gringo Tacos, Tostadas, Tamales, Rellenos, and Enchiladas. The dinner entrees range from $15-22. We ordered Guacamole and Chips ($7). The guacamole had some brown streaks, like it had been stirred. It was tasteless even though there were pieces of red onion and tomato. The avocado was probably mixed with mayonaise or something to stretch it and make it watery. The chips were thick and crisp. We didn't finish the chips or the guacamole. My husband ordered 2 A La Carte Tamales for $3.25 each. He had a Pork Tamale with Verde Sauce and a Chicken Tamale with Roja Sauce. He liked the chicken one better. They also offer a plate of 2 tamales with rice and beans for $11. I ordered the Tacos Al Sabor Plate which came with rice and beans for $10. I could have ordered the 3 tacos for $3.25 each, but for .25 more I got rice and beans. There were 3 white corn tortillas with chopped white onion, cilantro, avocado, cabbage, carnitas, and fresh lime wedges. There were no tomatoes or pico de gallo on it. The tacos were average sized tacos, not like the typical 2-bite street tacos in Denver. The refried beans tasted burned. The rice was okay. We would definitely come back for the views and for the A La Carte menu. read more
