Visited Monterrey Cafe for lunch. Restaurant has a nice traditional look and feel. Ordered the…read moreTampiquena plate. I requested beef fajitas, two cheddar cheese enchiladas, a crispy corn taco with ground beef filling. The plate included rice and beans, guacamole and a choice of tortillas. I asked for flour. When my plate arrived the food looked hot, tasty and freshly made. After giving everything on my plate a try, here is my subjective assessment of the meal. Again, this was my only visit so I didn't try anything else. Service: 5 out 5, servers were friendly, helpful and attentive. You can tell they take pride in their jobs. They all wore matching black T-shirts. They refilled my drink and stopped by to ask if I needed anything else. Atmosphere: 5 out 5, not fancy but who cares. It was clean, comfortable and inviting. It feels like it's been there since 1972. Food: 3 out 5, although the items on my plate looked fresh and tasty, I felt only two items really stood out. The crispy taco was the best item on my plate. It was crunchy and delicious. The flour tortillas were freshly made and delicious. However, the beef fajitas were bland and chewy. The cheese enchiladas seriously lacked flavor. The cheese filling and enchilada sauce could and should have been better. The rice and refied beans were flavorless. Overall, the flavors were muted and I would say needed more seasoning. I wanted to give it a higher rating. I may try going again in the future but I'll order something different. They serve breakfast too.

I should've turned around the moment I saw the dust and mold, but unfortunately, I stayed and…read moreregretted it immediately. This place is filthy. The AC vents are caked in dust like they've never been cleaned, and there's what looks like black mold throughout the building. If this is what's visible to customers, I can only imagine what's happening behind the scenes in the kitchen. Then came the service, which somehow managed to be even worse. The girl taking my order was unbelievably rude from the start. I ordered exactly what's written on their menu--a parrillada--and she acted like I was out of my mind. Instead of just ringing up what I asked for, she kept pushing a botana, which is something completely different, looking irritated the entire time. To make it even more ridiculous, I asked for chips because apparently an $8.99 order of guacamole does not come with tortilla chips and was told it'd be $4.50 if I wanted some. You've got to be joking... Between the dirty environment, the attitude, and the absurd upcharges, this restaurant is a hard never again. Save your money and your appetite bc there are way better places that actually care about their customers and their cleanliness. I'd go across the street to La Playa. Great customer service and food over there.

I also added a side of bacon and used half the tortilla to make one of my favorite breakfast tacos (chorizo and egg with beans and bacon). The serving sizes are huge. Even my dad didn't finish his plate. Mom ordered a breakfast plate that included pancakes and the pancakes were so fluffy looking. The only downside was that the ceilings were so high the noise carried too much, so it was very loud inside. But otherwise the food, service, and prices were great.
