Been here 4 or 5 times. TODAY was pretty awful. Lunch -chicken fried chicken, way overcooked-couldn't cut thru the breading-mashed potatoes were so watery you could taste the water. Cream gravy not even luke warm. Frozen green beans barely heated up-and tasted like it-no seasoning whatsoever. Waitress off doing other things- slow service. REALLY OFF DAY. They could do better-mostly old folks eat here, but that's no excuse for laziness in the kitchen. read more

Felt like I was at home getting a meal made by my mom!!! We were only in town for a few days to pick up my son from the MMA and needed a solid breakfast before heading to the airport. We walked in, were pleasantly greeted by the servers, and seated right away. Our waitress (Blue) was the sweetest lady ever! She brought us water right away, took our food order and was just awesome to deal with. Our food came out super quick and was just what we needed! Tasted like it came out of my mom's kitchen. Food was great! Service was good. We went for breakfast. Their cinnamon rolls and pancakes are a must. Mainly elderly people who were all sweet or kept to themselves. When we drove up to the place, my Besti said, " Maryann, I dont know about this" but as soon as we got off the car, one of the staff members opened the door for us. It felt like valet parking. We came in and we were attended immediately. We ordered water and coffee. We waited about 5 minutes for our food. Fast service. I ordered the farmer #1 plate, my husband ordered the waffle breakfast plate and my Besti ordered the abc burger. The seasoned fries were amazing. The burger meat fit the bun. The coffee was so good. The waitress was courteous and attentive. Lots of Parking available! My Besti who is a Harlingen local said "I'm coming back again, this is a hidden gem." My husband and I are from San Antonio, TX and out of all the places we ate this weekend, this one was the best. My husband gives this place a 4 of 5. My Besti gives this place a 5 of 5. This was my mother's baby and a family owned and operated business where customers felt like family too. We truly miss this place and yes it's still in operation and our customers still come in, and yes, Lonnie herself is still working here because she loves her customers and she loves being at the restaurant. It's her home away from home. Great memories here since opening in 1991. Although some things have changed, I'm proud of this place because my mother put her all into it, and she kept it in business for over 30 years. She deserves to be recognized and congratulated for this accomplishment. She's the true example of THE AMERICAN DREAM. read more

Very small place and they opens at 6AM. I had a Corn Beef, Hash, Egg and Coffee for $6.50 (after tax), plus $1 tip. The food is delicious, I enjoyed it. Most of the people ate around me were locals which saying this place is good. My only complains is that I asked for hot sauce and they brought me salsa. On the way to the airport, we looked up breakfast at this 'hole in the wall' restaurant. We're so glad that we did! My friend and I got the 'Farmer's #2' for breakfast and it was so good! It was 2 pancakes, 2eggs, bacon and hashbrowns. Everything was so good and so cheap for around 6 bucks. Our waitress, Sara, was great! Never left our cups empty. My friend got the bacon cheeseburger and he said it was the best! Don't mind the super old people. We're a bunch college age kids enjoying some good food. read more

Stopped at this mom and pop place on our way back from SPI. I ordered the poached eggs with ham and cheese on biscuits. The rest of my group ordered a bunch of different things so I got to try a little bit of everything. Poached eggs and sunny side up (from my nephews plate) were OVERCOOKED!! The "poached" egg was pretty much hard-boiled egg because when I cut into it there was no ooze at all, this was so disappointing since it's the most important part of the whole meal. The cheese on top is just a half-cut American cheese slice so nothing special. The ham had very nice flavor though. The hash browns it came with were SUPER buttery! It tasted like pure butter so if you're a butter-lover, order hash browns. I also tried their pancake and waffle which were tasty but their homemade syrup had no flavor....they give you a store-bought "sugar free" syrup bottle as well and That actually tasted more like syrup. The food was okay....but then again it's cheap so can't expect much. The service on the other hand was amazing!!!! Our waitress was very friendly and cracking jokes all the time. She was the reason we enjoyed our not-so-good breakfast. read more

Food is great. Yet the old "red headed" lady is a bit strange. No scratch that. Very strange!!! Anyway. I went in regular clothes & was treated by said lady like a second class citizen. ( give me your money l, eat & leave) attitude! Then boy-oh-boy show up in a military uniform & get even stranger looks & fake smiles. At least the wait staff is great. I won't point out whom. I'm sure that lady would cause issues. Seems like a place with drama. Anyway. In search of a new, nice, old school, diner in the cauldron of hell and heat that is Harlingen in...Most months, I came across this hidden little gem. Walking in it felt like a homey, everybody seems to know everyone even if they don't know you kind of place. Tons of pictures of what I assume are family and friends as well as customers are on the wall. Hand made crafts available for sale. Nice combination of both crochet and bead work. When in the sun they look pretty cool. Apparently made by a regular customer - a winter Texan - from Michigan. Vivian (spelling) was my server and she was very good. Very pleasant and greeted everyone with a smile and a southern welcome. Very cool. I ended up going with the pork chop and eggs. Just enough to fille up but not feel bloated (TMI?). The food was very good and - for me - the barometer of the measuring stick was that when I asked for toast lightly toasted, it came back just that. Perfect! The eggs were great and the pork chop was generally tender. All that with some orange juice, coffee, and a little fruit, for $10. I'm a happy yelper. Highly recommend if you are ever deep deep DEEP in the heart of the hot cauldron of hell that is Harlingen. ( for the record, Harlingen is not that bad. Just too hot, too windy, too dusty for my liking. I need and prefer Rocky Mountains.) read more

Not down home at all!!!!!!I was not thrilled about this place . I'm from out of town and wanted a normal breakfast with hash browns ... Well I got hash towns but small portion. The service was very strict no splits , and ordered the coffee said I wanted to taste because since I'd been here the coffees were watered down some. So I told her I didn't like coffee but I will sip on this cup since it was already here. She said no you will have to pay. So Denny's would have been a better choice than this place for sure. No substitutions on food!!! They also charged the coffee that I was not aloud to sip on. read more

I came from California to visit my girlfriend here in Texas. I decided to take her to this place and was not disappointed at all. We both walked in there and noticed the heavy traffic. Despite the traffic we got our food at a reasonable time, and was really delicious! My girlfriend loved her eggs benedict and I liked the spinach and cheese omelette I ordered. To end our perfect breakfast and time spent together the cashier insisted we do not pay anything. I insisted we do but she insisted we don't. I have not had such a great experience in my life, even in California (and I love restaurants). I want to personally thank the owner or whoever did the kind act. I will definitely be coming back for their delicious food and amazing service, but the review here is for the great memory and wonderful morning hosted at Lonnies Down Home. God bless you. read more
