Capuccino

My partner and I ate breakfast here during our cruise stop and we ordered the Machaca de Cangrejo (Crab Machaca) and Eggs Benedict with Salmon. Service and ambiance were excellent! Our servers were excellent and I'm sad I forgot their names. Our lady server was Spanish-speaking and was very nice. Although I spoke little Spanish, I was happy that we were able to understand each other and she was accommodating and understanding with my broken Spanish grammar. Our male server spoke English and was accommodating to my partner and I as well. I enjoyed how no one pressured us to eat at the restaurant and the rest of the customers were mostly locals. The food was SO delicious. I've never had crab for breakfast so I was very impressed with the food and how it tasted. I will definitely be coming back if I am ever in Ensenada and will recommend this restaurant to other tourists and people!

Dona Pepita omelette - excellent

Wow - yet another incredible culinary experience in Ensenada! It was a weekday morning and we were craving some breakfast after making the trek down from San Diego the previous evening. El Rey Sol came highly recommended from our airbnb host. A short uber ride later and we arrived. Masks are required for entry - after taking your temperature and requesting you use hand sanitizer, we entered the dining room. Fancy. Maroon walls are adorned with artwork and the lighting from chandeliers. All the servers are wearing formalwear. Menus are available via QR code or printed. Yes, there's an English menu for those still working on their Spanish. Very attentive hospitality from Luis. We started with almond croissants from the pastry carts. They were huge, fresh, and decadent. Caffeine sometimes gets me going too hard so we opted for fresh squeezed papaya + grapefruit juices. Solid. Now onto the entrees. We shared the green chilaquiles with green salsa and chicken. Incredibly flavorful, with bright notes contrasted by hearty cheese. Next up was the Dona Pepita Omelette -- named for the original owner of the restaurant and her recipes that are now nearly 75 years old. The highlight was the béchamel sauce that covered the dish. Unbelievable umami and richness. All accompanied by salsa arbol and grilled Serrano peppers. All this for about $30 USD out the door for two people. Enjoy!

Tableside Cesar Salad

Classic French restaurant in Ensenada with amazing service, table side Cesar salad, traditional French onion soup that was absolutely delicious, fabulous fondue and wonderful pasta courses. Wine pairing from Santo Thomas was excellent.

Excellent food, impeccable service, freshly made Caesar salad at your table from scratch. Wish I lived closer - I'd be a regular! Nice decor- quiet and comfortable.

Soup special of the day (some sort of beans)

Came here for an early dinner - they had live music that was a plus. We all shared a large cheese board and received soup with our meals - some sort of bean soup, It was very good. Got the steam clam appetizer for a main and It was delicious. Great attentive service as well. We came dressed casual as It was early, but could see this being a little more upscale later at night.

I didn't realize you needed a reservation to come here but Nathan who owns this beautiful property with his vintner wife opened up their table for the best tasting we ever had! Each pour was delicious and we also got their charcuterie board which is not on the Malva menu but you can request. Nathan was very descriptive of their wine and praised his wife on creating so many of their wines. He made it clear that this is a woman owned vineyard and he just helps out. This made us chuckle because we all are married and would love for our husbands to praise us like he did! The vineyard is very resourceful and does clean practices for winemaking making it shine in their wines. I ended up going home with their Julio wine. I can't wait to try it at home and you can be sure we'll be back!

One in particular loved to ask for head scratches by resting his head on your leg waiting for you to pet him. We got there right when they opened so service was a bit slow but that's understandable because they were still preparing for the rest of the day. Presentation was on point and made for a very fun meal. The horse mackerel rosette while not in an actual rosette was very good. Nice touch of citrus. Sea urchin flan was very umami and very filling. Gyozas were more like dumplings because they did not have any crispness to the bottom and the gyoza wrappers tasted like they were dried out in a fridge. Filling was an ox tail filling and worked wonderfully. The ramen broth however was just a bit too salty. I think if they made it into an aspic and put a bit of it with the filling it would have made for a better flavor explosion. Catch of the day was ok. The skin of the fish was kinda soggy but overall flavor was good. I think the crispness of the fish skin added with the shaving of jicama would have made it more of a standout dish. For the Pig dish, they used a suckling pig. My only complaint with the dish is they should have dried the skin out some more and made it crispier. Who isn't a fan of crispy pork skins from a suckling pig. The presentation of the desserts was the most amazing. The pumpkin is pretty much a lavender milk cereal inside and some sort of jelly and granola topped with a salted caramel ice cream. The carrot cake. This is the most delicious carrot cake I have ever eaten and the presentation itself was very fun. The carrot itself is a carrot puree that was candied and filled with a cream to look like an actual carrot.

We were the only diners there but it was a Thursday evening, so I suppose that was it. That said, felt lonely. The food...feel sad to say this but meh. We got the 5 course tasting menu. There was no printed menu of the dishes so pardon the simple descriptions; this is all I can remember. The first course was vegetables on a puree of white beans and fennel. EXCELLENT. 2) Fried rabbit on a mayonnaise sauce. OK, putting something fried in mayonnaise without any acid is just too rich on rich. 3) Fish in a puttanesca sauce. Now, I don't like puttanesca, so there's that, BUT my fish wasn't cooked properly. Not seared and rare in the middle, but just undercooked. 4) Chicken in a sauce I can't remember. SUPER juicy and perfectly cooked but the seasoning and sauce...big meh from me. 5) Oy. I really didn't like this one. Lemon verbena flan in a honey-like sauce with fresh cherries. The cherries were lovely but otherwise...sugar on sugar on sugar. Yikes. Don't make this again...ever. Start over. Overall, felt overpriced for the quality of the food. Would skip this one.

For groups larger than 7, they require a prix fixe menu (5 or 7 courses) with the option to add a wine pairing. We went with the 5 course + wine pairing, which included a welcome drink (gin + cucumber based and very refreshing). The pairing was supposed to include four wines, but we only ended up getting one red and one white with refills which was a bit of a bummer. That said, the red ended up being one of my favorites from the entire trip, so partial win there. Food: absolutely delicious. Everything came out family style, beautifully plated, and perfect for sharing with a big group. No complaints on flavor or execution! 4 stars (and not 5): a few frustrating misses for a high end spot. First... they were out of tequila. In Valle. At this restaurant. What? Lol. Second, we were required to select our main entree in advance (choices were rock fish or suckling pig), only to get a call about an hour before our reservation saying neither would be available. The replacements were a fish (I think salmon?) and pork belly. Don't get me wrong both were good but last min menu changes like that shouldn't really happen at this level. All that said, still a great experience overall. I would come back with a smaller group so I can actually order my own meal and avoid the prix fixe surprises.

I came here during lunch hour on a Monday and it seemed moderately busy. Quite the cozy place, very comfortable and it was decorated with Christmas decor. I was seated quickly, and my order was taken efficiently. Chips and salsa quickly came out along with the condiments I would later use on my meal. Overall, I received excellent table service. The focus of this restaurant is on Birria, both beef and lamb. There isn't a variety of other Mexican dishes here such as enchiladas, burritos or seafood. There is instead a plethora of ways to eat the Birria including tacos, quesa-birria, and stew bowls only in beef or lamb. No chicken or vegetarian options available. I ordered the lamb Birria, which came in a standard sized bowl. The portions were modest, and the ratio from broth to chunks of meat was reasonable. While this place was highly rated, I found my meal to be average in both size and taste. When it comes to this delicious dish, I am a bit of a connoisseur, and I've had birria in different parts of Mexico, including Mexicali, Guadalajara, Ensenada and outside of Mexico- restaurants throughout Los Angeles and all the way up to northern California. This was not the best tasting birria I have experience up-to-date but it also was not disappointing. The flavors were standard and fair yet not memorable. I would recommend this establishment. Tip: my usual order at these places is the stew in a bowl with a side of corn tortillas. For those with larger appetites, I would suggest ordering the same thing, but consider adding one-to-two quesa-Birrias to reach satisfaction. I would return here but also leave my options open to try the competition.
