    Filet Mignon Burger
    Jack M.

I've visited Frenchy's Hideout, and it's true, he does hide out here, but you really need to look. On my first visit, I came during happy hour, and thoroughly enjoyed the Filet Mignon Burger, and the second time was during brunch where I dove into a French classic, the Croque Madame. Let's just say, both experiences resulted in a very positive experience. The burger was very made and tempted at a beautiful pink medium. The burger came with bacon, greens, onions, with cheese that baked on the burger in a high heat oven. It's those little things that make a burger special. The flavor of the beef up front and personal, which is what you want in a great burger. The bacon was of the thick variety and good quality, as a result it offered, not only great flavor, but a great chew. It was a great burger and quite a mouthful, I may add. The burger came with a heaping pile of well fried crispy and well seasoned fries. The Croque Madame was one of the best I have had in San Diego. It does not come with eggs, so you have to request it for an additional $2.50 fee. Like the filet mignon burger, this too looked great when it arrived. I asked for the eggs to tempted at over medium and the kitchen did not disappoint. The eggs were perfect and offered that nice slow run of the yolk. The meal came with a side of delicious house potatoes. The Croque Madame came filled with a thick black forest ham between the slices of toasted sourdough bread. The béchamel sauce was most excellent and well executed. It was silky smooth with great flavor. It was a great breakfast, and those house potatoes offered a great crispiness and tender center. Well done! Both times, the service was not just super chill, but friendly and helpful. They offer inside seating and a small patio right out in front.

Such a cozy spot with some delicious French food!! Owner is very kind and extremely knowledgeable about every single item on the menu including the wine list. Definitely don't miss this spot in Hillcrest!

Hidden gem with great food -- but mixed first impression My son wanted to try escargot, so we decided to check out Frenchi Hideout in Hillcrest. It truly is a little hidden gem tucked away in the neighborhood. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty -- we only saw one other customer near the check-in booth. The owner's wife asked if we had reservations and seemed hesitant about seating us. It felt a bit awkward, especially since the restaurant was clearly not busy. I honestly felt pre-judged walking in. Thankfully, her husband stepped in right away and warmly told us to go ahead and choose a seat, which immediately made things more comfortable. Now -- the food absolutely made up for that first impression. The escargot was delicious -- soaked in rich garlic butter and perfectly cooked. We ordered the steak frites -- the steak came out slightly cold, but the fries were crispy and tasty. The beef bourguignon was hands-down the star of the meal -- incredibly tender meat and deep, flavorful sauce. I would absolutely return just for that dish alone. We also tried the duck confit, which was well-prepared. We ordered a bump of caviar for about $25, and I'll be honest -- it was literally a tiny bump. Tasty, yes, but very small for the price. For dessert, the crème brûlée had a nice texture, though it wasn't quite as sweet as I prefer -- still enjoyable. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate vibe that adds to the charm. Overall, great food and a charming setting, with just a slightly awkward first impression. I'd return -- especially for the beef bourguignon.

We visited this cozy French restaurant in Hillcrest on Saturday evening right after the New Year, and it was a wonderful experience. Some Christmas decorations were still up. It's family-owned, and you'll often see the husband and wife greeting guests, serving tables, and checking in. Even though they've been open less than a year, the restaurant already has a great buzz. The space is small and fills up fast, so reservations are highly recommended. We ordered the Tuna Crudo, Roasted Beet Salad, Wild King Atlantic Salmon, Duck Confit, and Red Wine Poached Pear. Everything was excellent, but the Duck Confit completely stood out--by far the best duck dish I've ever had, incredibly tender with a unique flavor. I'll definitely be back just for that. The bread shown in photos must be ordered separately for an extra charge. I want to come to try other dishes as well.

Wonderful happy hour. Thoroughly enjoyed the escargot / homemade baguette for dipping. Great sparkling and rose to accompany. Delightful onion soup (which I was told was featured in the NYT). Great presentation for the creme brûlée.

Frenchie's is such a cute and quaint little spot in Hillcrest. It's a smaller restaurant with fewer tables, which makes the experience feel really personal and intimate. The atmosphere is super charming, and the service was impressively fast. The food was phenomenal--the duck was an absolute standout, perfectly cooked and fall-off-the-bone tender. The steak was also incredibly tender, and the escargot was amazing. Even the pizza salad was delicious. I had a great glass (actually, a phenomenal bottle) of French red wine from a château that paired beautifully with everything. Overall, this place is a gem. I'd come back a hundred times over.

~Food/Drinks~ I ordered the 3 Course Prix-Fixe Menu with the wine pairing and it was more than enough food and drinks. Some of us got a little tipsy just from the wines. I think this is a very good deal, especially if you want to try everything. And the portions don't look like they're smaller just because it's part of a set menu. First Course: I chose the Moules Marinières which were mussels in a white wine sauce. Super zesty and refreshing but I wish the flavors stuck more to the mussels. I liked that the bread just soaked everything up though. Also, they give free, fresh baguettes and it comes with garlic butter that's made in-house. So good! I also got to try the Soupe a l'onion Gratinée (French Onion Soup) and it was pretty good. Slightly sweet, very good with the melted cheese. Second Course: I chose the Beef Bourguignon and it was really good. The meat was tender but the sauce was a bit salty...super flavorful though. I also got to try the Steak Frites, which is a little extra if you're choosing it for the Prix-Fixe menu. Steak was super tender and had truffle shavings! Dessert: And finally, for dessert, I chose the Flambée Crème brulée -tableside. I was not expecting this large of a portion and it's torched at your table. That caramelized top was so fresh so every single bite had a nice crunch. ~Service~ Great service and very friendly staff. We briefly met either the owner or manager but he came out and asked us how our meal was and chatted for a bit. Also, since we did the wine pairing with our meal, we had a great server who really knew the wines and explained the way it pairs with each course. ~Atmosphere~ Very warm atmosphere, like the restaurant is small and cozy. At least when we dined in, it mostly seemed like all the others were regulars/locals. ~Logistics~ We made a reservation just to be safe but the place never completely filled up during dinner. I want to gatekeep this so bad so there's never a wait but I also want them to do well! The restaurant is located in Hillcrest so there aren't any big lots or easy parking. We had to circle around and find street parking a couple of blocks away. ~Conclusion~ I feel like it's rare to find a really good French restaurant in San Diego but I'm glad we have Frenchy's. The food is delicious, the staff were friendly, and they have happy hour too! Tues-Thurs from 2-6PM and Fri-Sun from 3-6PM. Need to come back and try their happy hour menu!

I came here with my wife for dinner and we loved everything. Beautiful restaurant with food and amazing service. Owner Michael Simpson came to our table and brought us wine pairings with the price fixed menu and talked to us about his life. He made wine recommendations which made every course that much better. Every course was excellent and the service was excellent. We will be back again and again and again.

Thon Cru "fresh tuna crudo" DELICIOUS!

Decided to try out Frenchy's Hideout, a newly opened intimate French restaurant, and very glad I did. The space is cozy without feeling cramped, and the vibe was relaxed, with live music that added to the atmosphere. The service was on point, and Michael, the owner, came out to personally check in on us, which was a great touch. You can tell there's care behind both the food and the hospitality. Now let's talk food...make sure to ask for BAGUETTE AND BUTTER! Baguette is baked in house and that butter is garlicky and salty. Great start to get your mouth watering. You'll taste it after your meal too :) Thon Cru (fresh tuna crudo) - Easily one of the best things I've had in a while. Super fresh, light, and full of flavor. I'd go back for this dish alone. Bouillabaisse - The saffron broth was delicate but rich, and the shellfish tasted fresh and well-prepared. Note to self for next time: bring bread. You're gonna want to sop up every drop of that broth. Lamb Shank - No knife needed. It was fall-apart tender and deeply flavorful. Shrimp and pesto risotto was tasty. Shrimp perfectly cooked on a bed of fresh pesto risotto. For dessert, we tried both the creme brulee, which was brulee'd tableside (a nice touch), and the wine-poached pears. Neither was overly sweet, which I appreciated--they both wrapped up the meal in a balanced, satisfying way. Will I be back? Definitely. Frenchy's is the kind of place that feels like a hidden gem now--but maybe not for long. Go check it out... just don't tell everyone. Welp! Onto the next!

If you are in Hillcrest, and love a vibe, this place is so sweet. The room is cozy and the front patio is open and joyful. A nice selection of French and Cali wines help everyone get happy. Bon Chance, Frenchy!

    HOUSE BAGUETTE

Took my SO here for dinner, great service where the owner and waiters routinely were checking in on us. We ordered off the 3 course menu starting with Bread with garlic butter, Escargot, and French Onion Soup. Soup was absolutely incredible. Next we got our duck and beef dishes which were a tad bit salty but still very good. The roasted veggies were cooked perfectly and the boursin mash with the beef was an excellent complimentary side. The duck was fall off the bone delicious. Lastly we had the table side crème brûlée and the baked cheesecake, both were good but definitely would've done 2 crème brûlées. Very quiet spot and definitely tucked away in Hillcrest, owner said they've been open for a little over a year now. Truly is a hidden gem. The inside was packed the entire time we were there for our 6pm friday reservation with one or two bar seats open.

The Brunch was enjoyable. My friends and I enjoyed the Ratatouille Omelette, French Toast, Frenchy's Open Face Omelette, freshly baked baguette and coffee. It is a nice quaint place and the decor is nicely done and feels really special. The service was friendly and good.

The server had a couple of hiccups with an incorrect food order and totally separate billing issue (which by their reaction I would assume was an off night) but other food delivery staff and bussing staff were timely and professional. I would recommend reservations. I was able to secure a seat (due to showing for dinner around 4 pm or so), but the restaurant filled up nicely and hosted about 4 anniversary's and 1 birthday in my time there. Dress attire seemed casual but there is definitely a more elevated clientele so I would recommend a thoughtful outfit for the experience.

First, I still really enjoy the Carruth Wine Garden. It is nice to have an outdoor space to drink wine right in the center of the city. In general there plenty of parking ,and it is dog friendly. As far as the wine, it is very good. I like some more than others. More recently, I have enjoyed the Unicorn Red Blend ( a longtime favorite) and the Syrah. I love that it is dog friendly, inside and out. My dog loves going there and she makes friends each time. A change that they made recently is that the main garden area is now child-free, which was a positive change in my options, as it had gotten a bit chaotic in the past with children not being very well supervised. They do not allow for outside food, and only make certain dishes certain days of the week, which unfortunately doesn't allow for many options if you are hungry. Water is readily available inside and outside. All in all, it is a lovely place with good wine to come with friends and your 4-legged friends. It has gotten a bit pricey, and I do wish we could bring out own snacks, but I still enjoy going and am sure that I will be back.

Overall, I had a phenomenal experience for my birthday dinner, the music/ambiance was great, service was great, and the food quality for both the meat choices we got, sides (caesar salad, broccoli, and macaroni) we're all SO yummy! I will definitely be back!

Lots of hype about Fort Oak. Seemed to be busy when we were in the area. Menu is pinch…read moreoff-putting. Wasn't tooooo much looking forward to it, but it fit all the Birthday Dinner check marks and you can't down talk a place if you haven't been there. First. Listen. Everyone's using open table. But Fort Oak, tell Open Table to chill. I used open table to reserve about 4 days in advance, but still got a TON of emails, and a ton of notifications. Including one that, if I didn't respond to it, would cancel my reservation. Then 3 follow ups asking me to review Fort Oak. Haysuse on a pogo stick, that was almost a detractor from the actual dinner. Is this dinner or a past due bill sent to collection agency? I digress. First, our waiter Johny E, phenomenal. Dude knows wine in ways that are supernatural. Spot on recommendations. Second. Put on your Pulp Fiction "5 dollar shake" face about a 50 dollar pork chop. A FIFTY DOLLAR PORK CHOP. Waiter, who had already proven he know WTF was what, simply said "we're known for it, you will probably enjoy, people rave about it". So, I mean, when in Rome. Johny wasn't lying. It's a pretty @#$#ing good pork chop. Color me amazed. You can be skeptical. You might say I was just trying to justify having spent 50 on a pork chop. Try it. Stunning. I don't know if it's the best I ever had, but I can't remember a better one. Over all, they nail the experience, the food, and wrap it up in a bow. It is always busy, so a reservation is best (I'd call vice using that @#$# open table app, I swear). Shout out about Johny - in fact, ask for him to be your waiter, he a star.

Easily the best meal I've had in a while! We had a reservation at 7 pm and were seated right away…read more Reservations seem like they would be your best bet here, as the restaurant was very lively and crowded. However, we were seated on the outdoor patio which was spacious enough (and dog friendly). The decor was also beautiful! Now for what we ordered: - Ahi Tartare: we weren't planning to get this, but the server recommended. This was fantastic. The crispy shallot added a good amount of crunch, and the brioche it was served with was buttered and toasted to perfection. A standout dish for us - Little Gem Salad: not a must get, but delicious nonetheless. I loved the whipped feta and ranch in this - Goat Milk Cavatelli: soooo good. The sausage in this is really yummy and nicely paired with the charred broccoli. I'd recommend this one - Branzino: delicious. Comes de-boned which is appreciated, and is deliciously flaky. Get this! - NY Strip: ok I know I've said "get this" for basically everything....but seriously get this one. The presentation is beautiful and the squash, bone marrow, and everything else on top were very tasty. This was our favorite dish!
