Came here for happy hour with my pup - comfortable table and seats on their patio! I wish I took a picture of my lavender cocktail - it was BEAUTIFUL and it was delicious. The escargot comes pre-shelled in a decadent garlic-y butter that goes perfectly with the fresh baguette - which was also so perfectly crunchy on the outside and soft on the inside. Got the burger with upgraded fries - white truffle seasoning which had real truffle and sizable piece of fresh cheese. Service was excellent, music was at the perfect volume to appreciate the relaxing classics and still have conversation, and I will 1000% be coming back. The beef bourguignon was tender and flavorful, coupled with fresh vegetables. The fish of the day was perfect. Crisp skin with a light brown texture atop the salmon. It was flaky yet moist. It was accompanied by perfectly grilled potatoes that had the crispy exterior and the smooth interior. The wine selection is amazing, and they even have some cocktails. The house wine selection is a great choice. 2/VIBES. It is not pretentious. The owner is front of house and is welcoming like family. He's willing to chat, or leave you be. Service is not stuffy, but it's still refined (in a casual sense) to be a perfect high class date spot. The decor is lovely. The interior is cozy, including bar seating. They also have a headed outdoor patio that is separated from the sidewalk to avoid any incessant interaction with people walking by. 3/VALUE. It's not cheap, but it's not pricey. I came to Frenchy's Hideout when they opened, and it stayed pretty mellow during the course of my meal. Their lunch menu leans towards Paninis; however they offer other items like salads. I sat at the bar and got to engage in a nice conversation with the bartender as I enjoyed my lunch. I ordered THE NICE (which is your Classic ham and Swiss, dijon-mayo spread) with a side of fries. The panini had a nice golden toast to it and the fries had a little crisp to them. With that said, my only complaint would be that the lunch menu is a tad more expensive when you're looking at sandwiches. I've visited Frenchy's Hideout, and it's true, he does hide out here, but you really need to look. On my first visit, I came during happy hour, and thoroughly enjoyed the Filet Mignon Burger, and the second time was during brunch where I dove into a French classic, the Croque Madame. Let's just say, both experiences resulted in a very positive experience. The burger was very made and tempted at a beautiful pink medium. The burger came with bacon, greens, onions, with cheese that baked on the burger in a high heat oven. It's those little things that make a burger special. The flavor of the beef up front and personal, which is what you want in a great burger. The bacon was of the thick variety and good quality, as a result it offered, not only great flavor, but a great chew. It was a great burger and quite a mouthful, I may add. The burger came with a heaping pile of well fried crispy and well seasoned fries. The Croque Madame was one of the best I have had in San Diego. It does not come with eggs, so you have to request it for an additional $2.50 fee. Like the filet mignon burger, this too looked great when it arrived. I asked for the eggs to tempted at over medium and the kitchen did not disappoint. The eggs were perfect and offered that nice slow run of the yolk. The meal came with a side of delicious house potatoes. The Croque Madame came filled with a thick black forest ham between the slices of toasted sourdough bread. The béchamel sauce was most excellent and well executed. It was silky smooth with great flavor. It was a great breakfast, and those house potatoes offered a great crispiness and tender center. Pretty conflicted about this place- Came for happy hour because the menu was very attractive - good prices for great options! Made reservations but we were the only ones there- felt a little too intimate. The bartender kept overhearing and inputting in our conversation it was interesting - but the drinks were delicious!! The mussels were simple, good. The bread was very stale and tasted very frozen in my opinion. The truffle fries had real truffle which is nice, and I love the caviar bump options! That was fun. The charcuterie was a miss for us, as you can see the strawberry was the biggest thing on it. Hidden gem with great food -- but mixed first impression My son wanted to try escargot, so we decided to check out Frenchi Hideout in Hillcrest. It truly is a little hidden gem tucked away in the neighborhood. When we arrived, the restaurant was nearly empty -- we only saw one other customer near the check-in booth. The owner's wife asked if we had reservations and seemed hesitant about seating us. It felt a bit awkward, especially since the restaurant was clearly not busy. I honestly felt pre-judged walking in. Thankfully, her husband stepped in right away and warmly told us to go ahead and choose a seat, which immediately made things more comfortable. Now -- the food absolutely made up for that first impression. The escargot was delicious -- soaked in rich garlic butter and perfectly cooked. We ordered the steak frites -- the steak came out slightly cold, but the fries were crispy and tasty. The beef bourguignon was hands-down the star of the meal -- incredibly tender meat and deep, flavorful sauce. I would absolutely return just for that dish alone. We also tried the duck confit, which was well-prepared. We ordered a bump of caviar for about $25, and I'll be honest -- it was literally a tiny bump. Tasty, yes, but very small for the price. For dessert, the crème brûlée had a nice texture, though it wasn't quite as sweet as I prefer -- still enjoyable. The restaurant has a cozy, intimate vibe that adds to the charm. It's family-owned, and you'll often see the husband and wife greeting guests, serving tables, and checking in. Even though they've been open less than a year, the restaurant already has a great buzz. The space is small and fills up fast, so reservations are highly recommended. We ordered the Tuna Crudo, Roasted Beet Salad, Wild King Atlantic Salmon, Duck Confit, and Red Wine Poached Pear. Everything was excellent, but the Duck Confit completely stood out--by far the best duck dish I've ever had, incredibly tender with a unique flavor. I'll definitely be back just for that. From the moment we walked in, we felt more like welcomed guests than customers. Despite the restaurant being packed with Pride weekend crowds, owner Michael ("Frenchy") personally greeted and seated us and never made us feel rushed. He took the time to chat with us, describe each dish in detail, and even sampled the Pinot Noir we had brought (at our invitation) so he could give us the full breakdown (he's also a sommelier!). He recommended to chill it slightly, so he brought us an ice bucket so we could enjoy it at its best - and he was right. That level of hospitality is rare. As wonderful as the service was, the food was perhaps even more incredible. Every plate was gorgeously presented and bursting with flavor. We started with the beet and goat cheese salad, complete with blood oranges and pistachio crumble. It was one of the most unique and delicious salads we've ever had--earthy, sweet, tangy, with just the right touch of spice--perfectly balanced. The ratatouille was almost too beautiful to eat--a vibrant canvas of impeccably cooked vegetables that tasted every bit as incredible as it looked. Then there was the duck confit. I'm somewhat of a duck connoisseur at French restaurants, and this was, without question, the best duck I've ever had. It was so tender that it literally fell off the bone, and the rich cherry Rocher sauce elevated it into something unforgettable. Decadent, elegant, absolutely transcendent. It's the kind of dish you keep thinking about even after you've left. To finish, we shared the crème brûlée, flambéed tableside and served in a generously sized oval ramekin that was perfect for sharing. ~Food/Drinks~ I ordered the 3 Course Prix-Fixe Menu with the wine pairing and it was more than enough food and drinks. Some of us got a little tipsy just from the wines. I think this is a very good deal, especially if you want to try everything. And the portions don't look like they're smaller just because it's part of a set menu. First Course: I chose the Moules Marinières which were mussels in a white wine sauce. Super zesty and refreshing but I wish the flavors stuck more to the mussels. I also got to try the Soupe a l'onion Gratinée (French Onion Soup) and it was pretty good. Slightly sweet, very good with the melted cheese. Second Course: I chose the Beef Bourguignon and it was really good. The meat was tender but the sauce was a bit salty...super flavorful though. I also got to try the Steak Frites, which is a little extra if you're choosing it for the Prix-Fixe menu. Steak was super tender and had truffle shavings! Dessert: And finally, for dessert, I chose the Flambée Crème brulée -tableside. I was not expecting this large of a portion and it's torched at your table. That caramelized top was so fresh so every single bite had a nice crunch. ~Service~ Great service and very friendly staff. We briefly met either the owner or manager but he came out and asked us how our meal was and chatted for a bit. Also, since we did the wine pairing with our meal, we had a great server who really knew the wines and explained the way it pairs with each course. ~Atmosphere~ Very warm atmosphere, like the restaurant is small and cozy. At least when we dined in, it mostly seemed like all the others were regulars/locals. ~Logistics~ We made a reservation just to be safe but the place never completely filled up during dinner. I want to gatekeep this so bad so there's never a wait but I also want them to do well! The restaurant is located in Hillcrest so there aren't any big lots or easy parking. We had to circle around and find street parking a couple of blocks away. ~Conclusion~ I feel like it's rare to find a really good French restaurant in San Diego but I'm glad we have Frenchy's. One weekday in February, I was on a solo mission for this specific Happy Hour burger after seeing it on social media. Happy to report that I think I found my favorite burger of all time...at a French restaurant. Not only was this ginormous burger and portion of fries only $22, but it came with a delicious garlic ranch sauce that just set this meal over. The fries reminded me of McDonalds fries (meaning they were perfect). They were crispy, warm, and perfectly salty. The burger...HUGE. The bread was crispy on the inside but soft on the outside. The meat was juicy and flavorful, cheese melted, and the onion rings were crunchy. The combination of flavors just amazing. The place is pretty small in size. They have a cute small patio area up front that I could envision being a nice spot to be at night. The interior is cute. I enjoyed my view of the Eiffel Tower while I was eating. Took me back to my Paris trip from last summer hahaha. The owner was so nice and was a joyful guy. He gave me a Free Appetizer card for the next time I go. There were 2 circle tables out on the patio. The inside felt very cozy and romantic. About 5 chairs at the bar, a circle table that can fit 6, a couple of tables for 2. Walking into the restaurant you're transported to a culinary delight in the form of a super quaint and intimate ambiance. I started my dinner with the Thon Cru a fresh tuna crudo that was unlike any I've had before. A fabulous mix of flavors that was very unique and so beautifully presented. My main was the steak frites and it came out perfect. The sauce was to incredible and was even topped with real truffles. Went back for Sunday brunch. Everything we ordered was amazing. We shared the French onion soup to start. Honestly the best I've ever had. The cheese on top of the baguette is out of this world. The broth perfect. We had the Cali Benedict and the Beef Bourguignon Hash. I don't have enough vocabulary to explain how great it was. Mike the owner came to our table and made our morning special. He asked questions on what we liked and recommended what he felt would be perfect for us. Every recommendation was spot on. We sat outside on the patio and were able to watch people pass by as we ate our meal. It was a little chilly, but Mike came over and turned on the heater for my wife. Paola his wife came to see if we were enjoying ourselves and recommended the crème brûlée. My wife and I were both full, but figured a bite wouldn't hurt. As he fired the torch on top of the crème brûlée I knew it was going to be something special. With two spoons we were fighting for the last bite of the sugary topped perfection. Frenchy's Hideout has replaced a long standing creperie in the Hillcrest neighborhood. The moniker was in honor of the owner's nickname. I believe the business is still in a soft opening phase until later this month. A small front patio consisting of two large round tables complemented the inside dining area which can hold about 50 customers. The decor was redone with darker tones to reflect a French wine bistro. There were two menus offered, a prefixed three-course set for $75 per person and an a la carte version featuring starters, mains, and desserts. I went with the latter and selected the Soupe a L'Onion Gratinée to begin my meal. This was a traditional French onion soup covered with melted comte cheese. It was supposed to come with a baguette, but one wasn't provided with my serving. The broth was steaming hot because of the cheese cover. It was flavorful but pricey at $18. The Magret de Canard was my entrée. This was two pieces of duck breast served on a cherry rocher sauce with roasted celery root purée, sautéed green beans, and carrots. The sauce was outstanding with its sweetness that paired beautifully with the duck breast. The bonus was the two black cherries. I do wish there was more celery root purée as a couple of smears were insufficient. The meat itself was cooked just right although the ends were oversalted while the middle was fine. The service from the waiter was terrific. He was able to address all of my questions about the menu and the business in general. After the full grand opening occurs, the a la carte offerings should expand. The current list had three starters, five mains, and two desserts. Great food, service, and ambiance! Breakfast was delicious, very friendly staff and chef came and talked to us, made a special plate of deliciousness for the birthday girl. Will definitely come back! read more
