The atmosphere was immediately welcoming and comfortable. We received homemade corn chips, tasty salsa and bean dip, and offered queso. The queso was thinner than I prefer but not a huge deal. I had the Al Pastor quesadilla. First time for me. I took the first bite and knew it will be one of my go-tos. It is plenty big enough as well. I brought 2 pieces home. My daughter had the street tacos and was pleased with hers. The owner came and spoke with us , which is always welcome by me. It tells me that customers are important. This last visit they had the entire restaurant decorated for Valentine's Day coming up. But, besides the additional decorations the overall vibe is what you would expect for a Mexican restaurant but more. The service has been friendly and fast! The original Margarita is very good and for the price its about 3 servings. The complementary chips & salsa is great and more of a forgotten service nowadays, but great to see that Alegre is still doing it. The homemade tortilla chips are so good so be careful to not fill up on these before the main entrees. Kendra got the Chile Verde which was massive and was enough food for leftovers the next day. And, I had the Ceviche Sampler which is new and definitely worth every penny! It's hard to find restaurants that have ceviche on the menu, but this has been one of my favorites if you love seafood and a repeater for me! If your looking for more of an upscale $$ Mexican restaurant with great food, service and ambiance it's hard to beat El Muchacho Alegre.

I chose to get the carne asada for dinner and it was absolutely AMAZING. The steak was so juicy and tender, and seasoned to perfection. I loved the colorful paper banners and the paintings. We went at about 5 pm on a Saturday and were seated quickly. By 6:30 when we left, it was starting to fill in and there were a couple big parties so we left at the right time. The menu was pretty extensive, lots of different offerings. We were given complimentary chips and salsa, then our waitress offered more but didn't tell us it was $2 for a refill. Not a huge price, but we weren't told it was extra. I got a frozen classic margarita and my husband got a classic on the rocks. One and done! It was strong, your basic pre-mix flavor, and I loved the glasses! There was another drink on the menu called a cantarita (similar to a Paloma), which I can't wait to try sometime. I ordered the birria tacos and they were so good! The shell had a light crunch, the cheese was perfectly proportioned and melted, the meat was tender and flavorful, and the broth had the perfect amount of season, onion, and cilantro without being too overpowering. Everything was SO filling, between the drink, chips and salsa, I had to take one of the tacos to go. The salsa is made in house from fresh ingredients but the chips and tortillas aren't. She said they get the dough and it's cut up prior to making the tacos. Our waitress was super friendly and helpful, but the service was a little slow even though it wasn't too busy most of the time we were there. We didn't mind because we had time, but something to consider if you're in a hurry. Authenticity was 6/10 based on the overall vibes, music, taste of the food, but it was a bummer the tortillas weren't fresh made and the margarita was pre-mix.

The service was fantastic, and it felt like a true family restaurant. The chips were so good, and the salsa was spicy but not too much for people with sensitive palates. I love this style of chips, not a thin restaurant style but a thicker, more savory bite. We went through one portion before our food got to us and they brought more out when I asked. I highly recommend the tacos. I made a mistake and asked for birria not quesabirria tacos, so make sure to specify that if you want quesabirria (with cheese). But, the birria was good anyways! I also got the taco macho (see the pic for what's inside), and wish I would've ordered 2 of those! My husband got the huitlacoche and squash blossom tacos and they were both so good. I was so impressed they had huitlacoche as an option, I've never seen that before! The drinks were ordered and delivered from the server, but she said since they're working on a liquor license they have a bar next door that makes them. If you order a drink with your food, they charge for the drinks and food separate for that reason. I liked my jalapeño margarita! My husband got a cantarito and said it's the best one he's had from all the places we've tried to far!
