Delicious food! There was a little bit of a wait but everything was made fresh. I ordered the pollo asado with red beans and the chicken was really flavorful! I like the black beans my friend got more but like my chicken more than his braised beef dish. We also shared a chicken and cheese empanada but found the chicken to be a little dry. Today was my first time having any food of any sort inside of Dekalb Market Hall. Yes, I'm tardy to the party. I only had about an hour to spare before work and decided on El Punto Cubana. There were two very busy gentlemen behind the counter doing everything-cooking, cleaning serving. I was directed to the computerized menu at the counter. I ordered a chicken empanada which was light and crispy, larger than most empanadas and really tasty. I should've ordered a different type of empanada since I decided on a grilled chicken meal as my main dish. The chicken was fresh, tender and lightly seasoned. The peppers and onions were cut and sautéed perfectly. I wish that the green olives had been sliced instead of cooked whole but they were still delicious. The plantains were perfectly cooked and just sweet enough. The server plated it for me really nicely too. On the downside, main dishes at El Punto Cubana a. The sauce cups are tiny and half filled. The crust of the empanada was really good, but it wasn't what I expected. It was basically fried plantain that was put inside of the empanada and fried. I also ordered a spicy chicken empanada and regretted it. It was made with spices from the hottest part of hell. It was inedible unfortunately. I didn't try the other food but other customers seemed to be enjoying it. I went to this stall at Dekalb Market with my Cuban friend who moved here from Miami. She described the food here as "close to what I can get at home". Her go to I tried were croquetas de pollo (chicken croquettes). I've tried these in Miami and we both agreed the ones here are different but in a way, better than others. For one, the breading isn't as thick and is more panko like. While still fried fresh and hot, they leave you feeling a little more full in a satisfying and not bloated way. We also agreed these have way more chicken in them than the ones we have in Miami which often are 50/50 a blended chicken and potato mixture. Everything is made to order so we did have to wait a few minutes but so worth it for the hot, almost fall apart deliciousness. Staff speaks Spanish and is helpful. From someone who is from Miami, I believe this is as Cuban as it's going to get in the area. I really like their food I've been multiple times . I ordered the Mushroom Ropa Vieja with a side of order of plátano. The mushroom ropa vieja had more sliced veggies than actual mushroom. However, the flavor and olives were DELICIOUS. I really enjoyed the portions, flavor, and price for a vegan meal! I think my only complaint is that it's not AUTHENTIC Cuban food. I want Spanish menus, Cuban coffee on the menu, minimally priced giant platters of delicious food, and the coziness of the Cuban restaurants I grew up eating in Miami. I don't think the food is bad at all, but it's just not legit. It's missing the flavor of the actual Cuban restaurants I'm used to. The service was pretty quick and friendly! The seating is a bit tight as it's located in the food hall. However, I liked the Cuban posters and countertop seating! Overall, El Punto Cubano delivers good food! If you want authentic Cuban cuisine, you might have to go to Washington Heights or take a trip down to Miami to La Casita (the best Cuban food you'll have). Hubby and I just left from our lunch date here and we LOVED it!! The setup is so cute, they're so many nice pictures and everything feels so home-y. There were Spanish tunes playing and although we didn't understand, we were still jamming! Our server, Juhkera, was a sweetheart. Honestly a gem. The menu has so much more than the other places and everything looked so tasty we had no clue what to get. She walked us through almost everything on the menu and after we told her our preferences she recommended us both dishes. You can tell she really prioritized making sure we had a good experience. We got free chicken soup before our meals came out which was absolutely delicious. I got the fried chicken and it was definitely the best I've ever had. It was so crunchy and juicy! He got the beef and we thought it was going to have a little kick but sadly it didn't. It was still great but once we mixed it in with the rice it was heavenly! Everyone was so cramped together, it was so refreshing seeing people who could actually work that close and still have everything run smoothly! The only thing that saved this establishment from 1 star was the service. Other than that, it is a sham. For starters, I want to say if you are Cuban or have eaten actual Cuban food please do not come here. Not only the food was no where near cuban but it was over priced. I had croqueta de jamón, they fried it in old oil, the texture of the croqueta was consistent but it didn't have that hammy smoke flavor, it tastes like grease. The Cuban sandwich wasn't toasted. Like if you google how to make an authentic Cuban sandwich it not that hard and the ingredients are simple except the roast pork. The cheese wasn't even melted. The same grease they cooked the croquetas in, was in the roast pork so image my disgust. Lastly, the batido de trigo. What a disgrace. It tasted like a chunky egg nog. It has so much flavor and comes with such a good portion! The service is as great and the cashier even helped me on deciding what to get. Last night was our first time trying this spot. We have been frequent to Dekalb Market since they opened and thoroughly enjoyed the seafood spot that use to be in its place. The food initially was good but the service sucked. The person they had waiting was not as attentive and neither what seemed to be the manager that was there.
