Horrible to-go service. Won't even try to make it right after they messed up the order. Will not be returning.

We stopped in for lunch after a high school graduation ceremony. The restaurant is clean and beautifully decorated. After looking over the menu I had the chilaquiles rojos. When my plate was served I was surprised by the amount of food on the plate, such q generous serving! The chilaquiles were delicious and the chicken had a great flavor also the rice was cooked just right. Although it's not close to home I would defiantly make a trip back. read more

This is my go to Mexican place and it doesn't disappoint. There is nothing exceptional about it and for me that's just fine. I like to be comfortable and know what to expect when dining out and I get the same food and service every time. Taco Tuesday is a great deal, recommend going but expect a longer wait than normal. read more

This places is not good, food has no taste down to the chips and salsa wasn't good. but the drinks are good and our server....that's about it.this was our first time and we will not be going back. read more

Food is good and they are local. But for a Mexican restaurant, the chips are not good. There are so many restaurants with good chips, but for some reason their chips are just not good. It's a deal killer for me. read more

Some of the worst service me and my family have ever received. We placed an order here on Uber Eats for Cinco De Mayo at 7:30pm. The food was expected to be delivered around 8:20 (a long time but understood. It's a busy holiday). Our uber driver got there at around 8:10. At 8:30 they still hadn't come out with the food so we called the restaurant. A woman answered and said they were working on it. Our driver had been there for about 30 minutes by now. We called again around 9 still without the food. A man answered and said they didn't have an order under our name, weird because our uber driver was there so clearly the order had been placed. We then proceeded to ask to talk to the manager and the phone got put down for a second. We heard the man on the phone tell the woman what was going on and she said "just hang up, just hang up". The phone was then hung up and we never got our order. Seriously some of the worst, most unprofessional, and rude service we have ever received. read more

My family has been a loyal customer since 2012 when we lived in Suwanee. We have eaten here 40+ times and picked up another 20+ times over the years...at one point several of the servers even knew us. We moved to Buford in 2015 and have gone much less due to the distance, but would still place a to-go order once every 4 months. I pass nearby on the way home and would pick it up. The only reason we still pickup there is because my fiancee loves their Shrimp Ceviche, otherwise we would go to La Parrilla since their food is on par with El Porton with several items being better...La Parrilla does not have Ceviche though. My fiancee calls on 6/27/17 to place an order and their phone system states they only do online orders now, no call-ins. So she places it online at 6:53pm and I arrive at 7:12pm to pickup. I wait for 7 minutes before being acknowledged being told she will be with me soon...another 3 minutes before she helps me. I tell her I am picking up an online order and she asks for the receipt. I tell her I do not have it since I did not place the order. She tells me she has to have it because they have had "problems" before. So I go back to my car, call my fiancee to have her forward me the email. Come back in and show her the receipt and she starts to ringing up the items like there is no order placed. So I ask is the food being made already and she tells me she has to ring it up first so I can pay and then they will make it. By this time it is 7:28 and I was not about to wait another 10-15 minutes when the order should of already been ready. So I tell her to cancel and I leave. My fiancee calls to complain and they said their online ordering system is not working at all. What is the point of blocking phone calls for a system that doesn't work? This is the 6th time since moving to Buford we have had to wait 8+ minutes to even be acknowledged by one of their servers (tons running around) while waiting to pickup. So at this point we are done. Go to La Parrilla...food is great, Margarita's are a million times better, and much better customer service. read more

Food was ok and the service was good. There are no prices on the menu for any alcoholic beverages! When we asked for a drink menu, there were no prices on it either. The manager came over and couldn't explain it. The salsa was watery and bland. Nice design inside. read more

Hands down the best chicken tacos in Duluth! Everything is always hot and fresh and I would choose this over any Mexican restaurant around. Trust me on the chicken tacos! Enjoy! read more

The wait staff seem like they don't really want to be there, so you probably shouldn't either. If you can hear over their mumbling, you'll hear them explain why the bad meal they just served you was actually good, you just don't have the right taste for it. read more

Its ok. A little over priced for the quality of their food. The chicken tacos seem to be mostly onions and if you get rice and beans its like the put a little rice on the plate and shake it to make it cover a bigger area. I ordered the chille rellano the other day for pick up and it was so undercooked i just couldn't eat it. And if you get something with tomatoes on it they give you one roma tomato medallion. Its really just sad. The best part about the whole place for me is the flan its really good. read more

I have been there on two other occasions two months ago, and service and food was good to great, worth or recommendation. Both were at busy times at the restaurant. We wen't there this past Sunday afternoon and were disappointed. Food was OK, but they just got a 82 on their city inspection, with things like not having gloves to touch the food. Service was terrible terrible. I had to get up to ask for a refill on the ice tea twice, as the waiter was nowhere to be seen. We also had to stand up to get another waiter to give us the check, and the restaurant was not busy at all. One plate did not arrive with the rest of the food as someone had "forgotten" to put the order in. well, maybe was just our waiter, but we were disappointed to say the least. They are getting two stars this time, as the food continues to be OK. We will be going back to check it at another time, as we are really close to this restaurant. read more

THE WORST dining experience my family & I have ever had. Our server (Linda L.) never refilled my drink or chips, she did not make the guac "table side" as stated on the menu, & she overcharged us. She ROLLED her eyes at me when I pointed it out to her & told me to never do that again - I'm serious, she talked to me like a piece of sh*t. Absolutely appalling behavior from a server who also happened to be the "acting manager"! I will never eat at this "restaurant" again and wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy. The food is bland & has given me & other family members severe food poisoning before, so when I heard their food had improved I gave them another chance but regret it. Bad service + bad food = it's only a matter of time before this place is shut down. read more

So I went to this restaurant and the waitress was aware of what groupons we were planning on using. However, there was a problem and although the waitress was composed about the situation the manager yelled at us complaining how she couldn't afford us using our groupons this way. I did not mind the groupon policy but i did not like how the manager dealt with the problem. Will not go back anytime in the future. read more

Best local mexican around! Always great service, ice cold beers and flavored margaritas. And dollar taco nights thursdays and look for server mark! Always nice makes strong and great drinks read more

I feel like this place survives because of a) the location, and b) the people who live in this area don't know any better when it comes to good Mexican food. The chips were stale. I ordered a mango daiquiri after we took our order. Thirty minutes later (after our gross food comes out) a mango margarita comes out. I tell the waitress calmly that this is in fact a margarita (which are typically made with tequila) and that daiquiris contain rum. She claimed that the daiquiris here are made with tequila. Ten minutes later, the man behind the bar brings out a mediocre daiquiri. There was a bug in my boyfriends chorizo. After the bug, daiquiri/margarita situation, we asked for a manager. A man from the bar came to our table (who brought me my second daiquiri and we assumed was the manager), we pointed to the bug crawling around in his food and he took the plate away. Another woman came up to our table asking if we were okay. We said yes. We assumed she was the hostess because she was standing near the front with a bunch of menus when we walked in. Finally our waitress brings us the check. Excuse me?! After having bugs in my boyfriends food, having a mediocre at best burrito, and having to wait ~45 minutes for a daiquiri, we didn't think we should have to pay for this! We asked for the manager to come over, again, and the lady who asked us if we were okay (who we assumed was the hostess) stormed over to our table. She said "I asked if you were okay, why didn't you tell me what was going on?" We explained that we thought she was the hostess and the man who originally came over to the table and took away his plate was the manager. She shook her head, rolled her eyes, and told us to get out. This place was disgusting, service was horrible, and we were appalled to be treated with such contempt. Horrible experience. read more

La Poblana Fish Fajitas are the best!! Good Margaritas and service ! And the Fresh Guac made at your table is awesome! Never leave disappointed! read more

They charged our card the wrong amount - much higher than our bill and then charged our card the correct amount, so now we have a $130 bill from this place. They didn't do anything to make it right. They just said we'd get a corrected bill in 3-5 business days?!? That's absurd. They just stood there and starred at us while we disputed the bill. Hoping our credit card company can fix this for us. Will never go back. Service was slow. Chips are terrible. Menu is just average. Don't bother. read more

Never again. Stopped going there a few years ago: rudest waitresses (waiters are fine) but waitresses are arrogant; when their Sanitation Rating dropped into the "C" range, we decided not to return. Average food, poor sanitation rating, and extraordinarily rude waitresses. Fast forward December 2016. Sanitation Rating in the "B" range but waitresses with lousy attitudes remain: I received a coupon from El Porton and used it and we were shocked by the overt annoyance on the part of the waitress. She was not happy and made it very clear. Left us sitting there 20 minutes after the meal waiting for our bill. The woman who circulates asking how things are must be related to them because no other manager would tolerate such attitudes from employees who are supposed to provide service to customers. Poor service and mediocre food= Never, ever again. read more

Love this place. They have decent prices and pretty big portions and good taste. They have various types of salsas, you just need to ask. Their bowl of chicken soup is awesome! On top of that they have good margaritas for a fair price texas with gran mariner $4.99! read more

My husband and I use to always come here when we dated. I had my father in town and he insisted we come here. The cheese dip was room temperature, with watered down salsa, the margaritas were clear and had no alcohol what so ever. I still would like to know what I paid $51.00 for!! I am beyond pissed off and can't even imagine how they are still in business. We always go to Monterey down the street and I will never return. Absolutely no flavor at all. I wish I would have listened to my gut instincts. It has gone down hill tremendously! Don't waste your time!! Please trust me! read more

Ate there for the first time this evening. It wasn't packed but they had a good crowd. We were seated right away, drink order was taken quickly. Chips and salsa brought to table within a minute of sitting down. Got our drinks, placed our order. Food was out quickly. I had a beef chimi and my husband had the seafood burrito. We both enjoyed our food. Good food for a good price. Service was excellent. We weren't there even an hour. We will be going back often. read more

Love, love, love this place! My fav is the tamales. They are authentic and deliciouso! Have taken friends and family there many times - never had a bad experience with anything they ordered. I have been going to El Porton in Duluth for over two years now. And recently I had a deal breaking restaurant to consumer experience. We ordered 2 number 18 combos both made special one with no sour cream and no red sauce on the burrito to go. We placed our order with a manager behind the bar. No worries at this point, the manager re-read our order back to us and because it was very specific order and tipped her 3$. We got our order went three miles down the road to our house and revealed our order. Both # 18's had red sauce, one of which had a little sauce and fibers from what I assume was a paper towel left on the burrito and the rice and beans were mixed together. I assume by opening that they dropped it and just stuck it in the bag. So I then returned back to the restaurant to return my order since my boyfriend was happily eating his order and asked for my money back bc I would be eating alone when I got home. I talked to the same manager about the issue and told her I still love the restaurant and was planning on coming back because I love the food usually. She never apologized , asked if she could remake it, I told her no and that I was just going to get a cheese burger on the way home. She tried to give me some line about how the point of sale system was not able to remove an item and refund a food item. I very nicely asked if she could call the owner and have that person walk her through a refund on her point if sale. Ever so quickly she was able to make a refund happen. I got the amount for the combo but not the upgrade . I really used to love this place. Sadly I feel this is a death spin with their management and back of house. Really dissatisfied. read more

We had a party of three. We are originally from California, so our expectations were pretty high. We have been trying to find the best Mexican food around. We found two that were acceptable and five that were not, and unfortunately, El Porton was on the unacceptable list. It's not that the food was so absolutely horrible, but it wasn't even what I would I would consider Mexican food. No flavor, no spice no heat! First the chips and salsa - the chips I could immediately see were overcooked, and thus, had a burnt flavor. The salsa was not fresh. It was mass produced and canned. I ordered 3 A La Carte chicken tacos. The chicken breast had stewed much too long, which rendered it dry. My daughter ordered a taco salad, made with the same chicken and her first remark was that it was dry. My other daughter ordered chicken enchiladas. She tasted it, and she said it was tasteless and guess what? The chicken was dry too. We believe the enchilada sauce may have been watered down. The rice was orange in color, but had no flavor whatsoever. read more
