My go to is the seafood burrito. I have tried several other plates over the years but this is the best. Tried their new plate called seafood enchiladas. Sounded interesting. But a major disappointment. The sauce is weird and the pickled onions are not needed. Something was just off on the meal. So if you want seafood dish get the seafood burrito and not the enchiladas. After a long day of softball we stopped here for dinner before dropping one of my daughter team members off. The restaurant is kinda hidden in the Publix plaza off of Peachtree Road. However, I'm glad we stopped by. As soon as we walked in we were greeted and the host was so sweet. I honestly, thought they were going to be rude as we walked in an hour before closing. Our sever was really kind and did not rush us at all. She told us to take our time and brought out chips and salsa for us while we look through the menu. The atmosphere was very chilled as they played soft Spanish songs. I loved their Halloween decorations. Food was really good! The tacos were authentic and the hot sauce that came with the tacos were so BOMB and spicy! I even asked to place a Togo order just for the sauce. The enchiladas were also a hit!! The verde sauce on there was amazing. I'm usually not a big fan of refried beans but these were so soft and melts. The rice were not that great as they were kinda hard. We have been going to El Porton for years. There's a few seasoned servers that are there and if you get them, you're in luck. if not, good luck. We headed up the other night after a practice and someone made the comment. Oh it's so dark in there, but we went anyway and to our surprise they have renovated it and it's much lighter and brighter in there so kudos to them for that. The biggest issue is food, ordering and service . We ordered a large queso cheese with fresh jalapeños as an appetizer for the table. The cheese came it was cold, wouldn't even stick on the chips and gross pickled jalapeños. Again, we asked for fresh jalapeños and we're probably charged a dollar for it. (they've done the) We are in four meals - One was fried shrimp tacos, and they came grilled drizzled in Texas style barbecue coleslaw! Gross! What happened to the pico de gallo they used to use and shredded cheese. So I return the tacos for Fried with coleslaw so basically got a tortilla with four tiny shrimp in it nothing no shredded cheese or no pico de gallo. Nothing. Wow We had to track the servers down to get another beer and we had to track her down to get our bill and we had to track her down a third time to get it to go container for soup. We will be going back. We just feel like it's too easy to get right. read more

I came for lunch and ended up ordering dinner since lunch size seemed too small... felt like lunch portion to me. They barely gave me salsa. What happened here? They actually revamped and greatly improved their food! We had slowly stopped coming here because the food became mediocre but we decided to give it another try. From my margarita, to the salsa and chips....I could tell right away something had changed and it was for the better. The quality ingredients or the recipes were improved, and things actually had a nice flavor. I ordered my standard enchiladas verdes and could see the difference in the color of the sauce which was more vibrant, and i could taste the difference. We came here looking for a nice meal as a family since we have visited other locations of this same restaurant. Host was very friendly and everything seemed good until we placed our order. My partner ordered the " Berria Bowl" which included a side of Consume ( beef broth that comes with berria ). As the food arrives we are brought a different meal and as one should, politely corrects the waitress as what was brought to us was not what was ordered. She proceeds to bring us the correct order and states " it's basically the same thing as the last item , we don't really get asked to bring this one out so I am not familiar with it." Okay that's fine, yet we are still missing the soup portion of the meal.. we continue to inform her over what the menu says so we can get the other half of the meal. She then brings out a small continue of mainly grease and claims that the dish does not include the soup. She finally reads the menu agrees that it does come with the soup but claims that the chef was taught that it was made without it and does not include it, but she said she would inform them... the soup was never brought out. Moral of the story, management sucks and so does the service. Please laugh at what she brought out as our " beef broth ". read more

We ordered from here for delivery. Our order consisted of enchiladas. One enchilada supreme and one enchilada verdes... both were EXTREMELY underwhelming. There was NO verdes sauce and very little sauce on the "supreme" enchiladas. There was nothing about this order that was good or appealing. Everything was cold upon arrival which we totally realize is not the restaurant"s fault. The experience was awful and cost over $50! Will not be ordering here again. read more

Great food, fast and reliable. Sometimes you wonder what you've been doing with your life to end up eating four different kinds of enchiladas smothered in lettuce and sour cream and free salsa as you down your lemon drop margarita. Then you remember oh shit I left my Sweet rose milk tea with cheese foam inside of my purse. You dredge the contents of your sticky wallet, earbuds, cell phone, tablet, completely drenched keys and disgusting soaked face mask from your purse and put them on your passenger seat and head into Sprouts. You quickly grab the last hot herbed brussel sprouts and get to the register where a wonderful woman buys a cartload of groceries, then asks how much each item is bc she is shocked at the price of hipster juice. This is not worth waiting for but you politely demur, until you realize not only did she not check prices before throwing five kinds of water into her cart, she's also glaring at you since she's waiting on the rest of her family to saunter over with one item at a time. Forget it. I head home, I've had enough - but wait, there's more. My department had their monthly birthday celebration lunch here today. I had actually pulled up this place previously to check out local Mexican restaurants in Duluth, but opted to take my son to a place I wish I had never gone. It sits at the corner of Buford Hwy and Old Peachtree Rd in the Publix Shopping Center. You can see it coming off Old Peachtree Rd. It is your typical Mexican neighborhood eatery, with a large bar in the middle and plenty of tables. I liked the atmosphere of this place, with the lighting and upbeat Mexican music. We had about 8 people at the table, and the waitress did a great job of getting things out to us. The chips were ok, and the salsa was a little above average (a little too watery for my liking but it didn't taste like store salsa). The queso was what you'd expect at a neighborhood Mexican joint, on par for average. They had a decent sized lunch menu with items ranging from $5 to $10, so that's a plus. I ended up getting the #10 on the dinner menu for $8.89 (2 tacos, rice and beans). I thought pricing was just a tad more than what I'd like to see at an average Mexican place. I did enjoy my tacos, and the rice and beans were typical. The waitress did come by and offer dessert at the end, and they had a separate dessert menu, so there is another plus. Overall, this place hit my "on par" expectations for being that hole in the wall Mexican place you'd eat at. I'd probably come back here again, since it's close to my dad's, but not driving out of my way. If you're just searching for Mexican food for a quick "hit-the-spot" filling, this place will do! read more

Came here the other day for lunch with my family, and really enjoyed it! It wasn't my first time, but it was the first in awhile and I will definitely be back. As a native of SoCal, I love my authentic Mexican food, but it's sadly hard to come by in GA. I had delicious chicken fajitas and the chips and salsa were solid! Our service was great - the whole staff was friendly and attentive to my family. Overall, I highly recommend people try El Porton! Service over sustenance, or vibes over poor food? Well this little whole in the wall was a vortex of all these things. The service was excellent, but missed the mark when we ordered food. And the music was a nice distraction when the service disappeared for what seemed a little to long. But the real let down was the actual food. I can't lie, it was tasty. They actually used salt, pepper and spices, but everything else was just off. Mom had the taco plate, she Hates onion, so when you ask for j no onion...lettuce and tomato only .. well .. not what she got. Beans had a strange taste, but rice was cooked well. So I love nachos but hate the sogginess of layering chips, so they offer it as a surf and turf dip. Novel, easy to eat and right up my ally. Yet .. the tortillas where A LOT plastic like and this was anything but CHEESE DIP. It was more like cheese bath water. I expected a fundido. Molten cheese with chunks of chicken, steak and shrimps. The proteins (questionable shrimp) were on point, but there was no cheese pull to be had. And this leads back to the service, HE was fine, but the quality control was lacking. Here is what you MUST try: The Molcajete for 2. This is one of my favorite foods in the wolrd now. The Molcajete has Chicken and steak (and shrimp if you want), pineapples, onions, other things... and a freakin' CACTUS (though I've seen a lot of people not eat it because it is an acquired taste). The most DELICIOUS thing about the Molcajete? That sauuuce. Wrap it all up in your tortilla it tastes like heaven. Other things that are good though: Fajita, and the Guacamole isn't too bad. I placed an Uber eats order and wanted to order cheese dip with jalapeños; unfortunately you can only order plain cheese dip. I place the order and call the restaurant directly requesting to add jalapeños to my cheese dip. A lady answered the phone and told me she didn't know how to do it because they didn't have access to my card. I understood and told her I was happy to give it to her over the phone. She starts yelling at me that she doesn't know how to do that and so I just want her to cancel the order?! I respond calmly and tell her no, I want my order but I also want jalapeños in my cheese dip (& I also explained that wasn't an option on the app). She yells into the phone that she will just throw them in the order and she HANGS UP ON ME. Wowzer! I was not rude or raising my voice with her. I'm not sure what the problem was. Unfortunately, I receive my order and 1) there's no jalapeños AND 2) the order has been smashed ...literally. No idea of the smashing in of my order was from the restaurant or the Uber driver but it's now in the trash. Unbelievable. Not sure why this is so difficult. read more

I order the Vegetarian #3 & the guy orders a #11 add soft taco, an order of cheese dip with Jalapenos & EXTRA salsa (their salsa is BOMB). Everything is always fresh fresh fresh, hot & tasty! I normally sub the red sauce for queso on my burrito/cheese enchilada at other Mexican restaurants because it typically tastes like bland tomato sauce, but at El Porton you can tell it is homemade, great flavor with fresh onions. Yuuum! We recently used their curbside service due to the city requirements, it was easy, fast & efficient. read more

We've been going here for years (probably 10+) but no longer. Last night I discovered a 6+ inch long hair inside of my burrito which clearly means that someone is not wearing required hair restraints in the kitchen. We brought this up and told the manager we weren't going to eat any of the meals because they were clearly violating health code requirements. At first he offered to not charge us for that one meal (two other people in our party also had the same burrito) and then changed it to 50% off. We paid our tab and told them we'll never be coming back. After being a patron for so long we could understand a mistake being made (although this location has had a score in the low 80s before and we avoided it for almost a year) but the attitude of the manager was disappointing. I then drove to the restaurant and then the owner told me he never received my order after I showed him a itemized receipt. He lied to my face saying that I never ordered. REDICULOUS!!!! He also didn't bother to refund me . He told me I'm not responsible for the food . I will never go to this pathetic, low end, unprofessional, dirty, and box to microwave looking food EVER AGAIN. Not to mention during this whole COVID-19 no employees where wearing gloves nor a mask that I spoke to. Irresponsible!!!! It's not worth it and they do not care about quality or their customers. This is hands down a really amazing Mexican restaurant with the best service. The people that work there are great and I've never had a bad meal in there. I walked on a Friday around 8. Wow, jam packed, a wait to be seated. Is the food that good here, or have I just died and gone to suburban Mexican Combo hell? In any case, there was a very pretty Hostess to greet us. Mosey over to the bar, and there is a nice very well stocked good sized bar. Lots of options on the menu there, and like 10 beers on draft, many of them solid craft brews. Seated. Chips come out. Very stale, low quality. You really can't begin to judge a Mexican place by their chips like you would the bread at French or Italian place, but I am just saying, they were pretty bad. They have some Tapas style little things here. We tried a Ceviche Tapas, for $6 I did not expect much. It was OK for $6 I can't knock it. I had a Horchata. Worst Horchata I have ever had. Waitress asked me how it was towards the end of the meal. I tried to play coy, mentioned "it was different". She said "Oh so you liked it?" I continued my ruse. I ask "oh so it is homemade, you make it in back?". She replied "There is a mix and we mix it in back". My ruse was done. it is sugar water. Like Kool-Aid. Stay away from the Horchata here, es muy mal. I had the NY grilled streak with Onions and accompaniments. She had the Wrap which I was told was quite good. The Steak had nice flavor and the menu lists it as a choice cut Steak. I was surprised a choice cut NY Steak would be 40% fat. Simply for that fact I was disappointed. On the plus size service was good, and I asked for Habanero hot sauce, and yes they carry the super hot one, so I was impressed there. Couple that with a nice beer, proper bar/beer list, cute hostess, nice decor and moderate prices and really can't knock it with two stars. It rounds up to three. A colleague and I went here for lunch between client visits. It was around 12:30 and the restaurant was about 1/2 full. The server was very attentive and nice. I ordered a simple carnitas burrito. It was served promptly. Comparing to other Mexican restaurants, the food was average. The tortilla was doughy, the meat and fillings were a little bland. I added habanero hot sauce to add some taste and it helped a little. They did serve chips and salsa before the meal - the chips tasted home made and were served warm. The salsa was not spicy, and had something of a sweet taste. I prefer spicy, but that is a personal preference. It was certainly home made and very fresh. So - service good, food average. read more

Came here w/ the girls on Saturday around 7:30 pm. It wasn't busy so we were able to get seated immediately. The chips and dip were pretty classic but still good none the less. I ordered a Pina Colada and although it was good I don't believe it was made from scratch. Maybe a mix of some kind with little to no alcohol. It was also garnished with a orange slice instead of the classic Pineapple. The meal I ordered was the #5 combination which came with 2 chicken enchiladas and rice and beans. I truly enjoyed my meal. The enchiladas were filled with large pieces of shredded chicken with onions and peppers. So good. The rice was obviously fresh which was a plus. This place has good service. The waiters, waitresses, and hostess are all so nice. We came here with another family and our kids for a quick dinner. The restaurant is a bit dark, which can be a big rattling for kids. But the noise level is pretty good so if your kids are a bit noisy you don't have to be super embarrassed. My husband's family used to own a mexican restaurant in town and so whenever we go out for mexican food, which is rare because I am actually not a big fan, I ask him his opinion. He really liked his steak burrito plate. I ordered a combo with a taco, chalupa, and tostada. It wasn't something I would order again. I would likely order tacos next time, which is what our friends ordered and they looked simple by delicious. My son got a kids me with chicken fingers and fries and he was pretty happy, which makes all the difference to me these days when going to restaurants. I came here whilst visiting some friends who live nearby. Their previous experience here was positive so we were hopeful. However, if you have questions about the menu due to food allergies or food preferences, be prepared to get some attitude about it. I asked if the black beans were vegetarian and was assured it was, as well as the pinto beans. I asked if the rice was and got a crotchety response of "of course" with an eye roll. (Minus 1 star) I guess she thought I couldn't see or tell she was irritated. It's not a given that every independent restaurant makes their beans and rice the same, so I like to inquire. Also, anybody who works in the food industry should have some at least awareness in food allergies and restrictions and should be prepared for these requests. I ended up getting the two vegetarian tacos, which were tasty (a tiny bit too salty for my palette), except one had a huge chunk of plastic in it (minus another star). Intentional or not, I am not sure. Either way, the manager took care of this (he said he knew what it was....) and quickly had the plate remade. The manager also brought over a spicier salsa that he recommended with the tacos we had, which was appreciated. Black beans and rice were tasty and traditional. My friends enjoyed their meals, and the chips and salsa. For not the manager acting swiftly and professionally, I would have rated my experience two stars. read more

I've been eating at El Porton for five years. I've loved their chicken soup so much that I've bought it to take to sick friends. The flan dessert is delicious. But tonight on 7/28/22, at dinner time, it was not real crowded with customers at all. First, I first commented to my husband that we have a new menu. The service was beyond awful. Our table was so unserved, five times my husband had to get up and run down the waiter...guy with white hair and beard. When the bill came, for the two of us, it was $44, where it used to be around $27. We always order the same thing. We looked back at the new menu, coffee and flan had increased. Not sure about the increase on what my husband ordered. Also, it's just been announced on the news that the Ba5 Covid variant is rampant and more contagious than any previous variant. Not a soul had on a mask. We wore our mask and only removed it to eat. I'm 76 years old with several co-morbidities. I'm vaxed and boosted to the hilt. Recently, my 15 yr old grandson (vaxed to the hilt) caught this variant and almost landed in the hospital, he was so sick. They need a wake-up call. read more

Located on the side of a Publix shopping center the staff was friendly and seating comfortable, but the food was a mixture of good and bad. I always feel like most of the shopping center Mexican restaurants are pretty similar, but are best judged starting with the chips, salsa and queso. The chips here were pretty nasty, queso good only nothing to use to eat it with and the salsa was just okay. We ordered the guacamole and I was very impressed only yet again no chips to enjoy it with. I even went as far to ask for some flower tortillas (which they charged me for) and they tasted like microwaved from the grocery store. The burritos I was told from our guests were pretty good and my wife enjoyed her quesadillas, but the beans and rice were not all that great. My son got the steak tacos with corn tortillas and it was pretty good, but nothing that would have me overlook the other shortcomings. read more

The chicken soup here is r-e-a-l-l-y good. I have it EVERYtime I come here. I love the guacamole dip (loaded) as well. If you like cheese dip then you should have some jalapenos mixed in it for an added zing. And of course..... .Margaritas.......everything else is just an excuse to partake of this natural drink, or perhaps, one or two of these.
