Friends have been telling me about this place who are from Costa Rica, I'm just never in Bound Brook. Today was the day however! The restaurant was laid out with tables to the right & left, a coffee/juice bar and a bakery section in the back. Since my Spanish is nil, I believe who was one of the owners helped us choose our meal. Peruvian Beef Stir fry with rice and fries & Pueblo Style fillet of fish (tilapia) I had plantains & black beans as sides. Both were portions for two people & absolutely delicious. I had a tamarind drink and my friend had a Batido Mango (made with milk) The staff were all sweet and helpful. We got to-go bags. The prices were very reasonable for what we got. After we paid the check we were given caramelo flan ~ we said we would never finish it - well we did! Pretty much licked the plate. Can't wait to go back! And since I watch Celtic, premier, euro soccer, have found a new place that opens early! Soccer was playing on the screens while there! Another plus. Stopped in for lunch as we were working in the neighborhood. Pupusas were fresh and tasty. The pickled cabbage sadly was dry and needed some more liquid. The empanadas were also good. Someone got a soup and it looked good also. Hearty dish served with a side of rice. Sadly the service left a little bit to be desired. Our waitress was friendly but seemed a little lost in the sauce. Went here for a quick bite on our way to the mall. It was kind of empty on a Monday night. I am goad we stopped by. I ordered the daily special that comes with soup, a second dish with rice and a drink. It was delicious! The food was fresh and a good portion for dinner. This morning after I got off work, I was craving pupusas. A quick Yelp search helped me discover El Palacio. It was pretty close to the yard where I park my truck. When I came in, I sat down on the bar and I waited a few moments before they offered me the menu and asked what I wanted to drink. For the food I ordered 2 Pupusas. 1 chicharron, 1 revuelta . It took about 10 minutes to receive the food and it was fresh, and warm. The revuelta one which is mixed with cheese beans and chicharron, was amazing. The chicharron one was also good, just didn't have the same flavors as the revuelta. Each pupusa $3 or less Music was playing the whole time at semi high level, which I personally enjoy. Last but not least, the ambiance is very relaxed and what you would expect from a neighborhood Latin restaurant. Not upscale, so don't feel offended if you're not catered to like a King/Queen. My husband and I ordered pickup on the phone, and we were told the order would be ready in 20 minutes. The chicharron was mostly only the fatty part of the pork, as you can see in the picture. The chicharron is $12.55. We also ordered 2 beef empanadas & 2 chicken empanadas, and they only gave us 1 beef empanada that barely had any beef and mostly potato. We ordered 1 pan de bono. Tital cost was $ Empanadas are $2.00/each. We were disappointed because we ordered from here before and had no problems. Parking is free on the street up to 2 hrs. Food and Drinks: We had pineapple and papaya juices with was water (you can also have with milk). It was fresh and delicious (no ice). Chips and salsa came as complementary. The pupusas here are the best! Super fresh, with a good variety of fillings including loroco! They are served with curtido (pickled cabbage) and tomato salsa, which is not super spicy. I love the chicken and the suprema, as well as the loroco. Seriously, the best pupusas in this area by far! They have a really eclectic menu to go with the diner-esque decor, with a bakery case in the back. To be honest, I usually just get pupusas and a horchata which are more than enough for a meal, but their entrees are humongous! Street parking is available, and they are open til 11pm. read more

I was excited they have flan but it turned out ok because the texture was too hard I think they cooked in high temp it had lots of air bubbles in the flan. It was not full but we had some wait time. I was introduced to Salvadoran food decades ago, and haven't had much luck finding papusas in my travels. So when I do find them I am delighted! This place has fantastic papusas, and the staff is friendly, enthusiastic and helpful. The food is fantastic and you won't leave hungry. The portions are great and taste great. Our waitress was very helpful even though we are "pequito" espanol. She was patient and engaging and helped us with our order. The menu is also wonderful. There is something for everybody at every meal. While we went there for dinner, we eyeballed the breakfast menu. Two days later we went back for a breakfast that not only lasted us the rest of the day, but tasted great. The wait staff recognized us and were surprised and happy to have us back. Ordered chicken empanadas for appetizer, followed by Enchiladas Suizas and enchiladas ranchera. Portions were quite large and the taste was very good. I've been wanting to try this place for a while and after eating here I don't know why I waiting so long . They have a large menu of different kinds of Spanish dishes you look at it and say Wow I didn't expect that to be on the menu . We ordered chicken empanadas which were delicious with the sauce they give you. I had the chicken soup which reminded me of a Filipino soup I make at home . Full of flavors and nice chunks of hearty veggies and chicken and it comes with rice which makes it even better. My daughter ordered chicken enchiladas OMG it was a huge plate She only ate a 1/4 of it . My husband ordered the bistec it was so good and full of flavor the meat has definitely been marinating for a few days. My other daughter ordered a mixed plate of meats that had steak , chorizo , and thinly cooked chicken breast which also came with rice and egg the plate was also huge. It was delicious she ate almost all of it with a little help . They have pictures in the menu so it makes it easier to see what you are ordering. We found street parking easily (free on Sunday), and the downtown is so pleasant to walk. The restaurant is spacious and beautiful with several tvs and booths. They have a juice bar and a pastry showcase for all types of breads and desserts. The Jalea ($17) was amazing! The plate was overflowing with properly fried shrimp, soft shell crab, mussels, calamari and fish. It had sliced red onion along the side. The tacos are delicious. My al pastor tacos ($11) were stuffed full of seasoned pork and pineapple and garnished with cilantro and onion. The additional chopped tomato, cilantro and red onion to the side was great, along with a very flavorful and well-seasoned portion of refried beans. This was a wonderful lunch, and I found the service, portions, and quality ingredients to be deserving of the prices. They are a little slow with the check, but you can always flag someone down or head to the register if you are in a hurry. Had the skirt steak with shrimp - excellent! The good sized flavorful shrimp were grilled and crisp/firm, unlike some places that serve rubbery shrimp. Also had the rice with chicken and beef platter that was really good. The complementary salsa served with chips is among the best I have ever had. The shrimp appetizer was good. Refried beans were again the best I'm ever tasted. They customized the sides to we wanted. Flan for dessert was excellent. Took home some cookies to have with my morning coffee that were really good. The prices were reasonable and the service friendly and attentive. It's not a fancy place. I drove 40 minutes to get here (I do not do that unless the place is special). The food is Latin/Mexican. Not a cuisine I usually have, and not available where I live. Ok, yes it's East Main Street in Bound Brook. Not what you think of as a destination area, but worth a visit. I'm wondering why we were the only white people in the restaurant? Where's all that support for the Latino community I see on TV? Good Service - Helpful staff, answering questions. Quality and giant portions! Had the sopa mondongo (beef tripe soup) great taste - a large bowl could be a stand alone meal. Lomo Saltado (steak w/peppers, tomatoes, onions and fries, over rice) nicely done - with plenty of beef. Fish tacos really good - a standout! The chicken enchiladas entree was enormous, filling the platter. Containers with leftovers (another good sign). The extensive menu has photos and descriptions of the entrees. It's either a hit or miss with this restaurant. I usually order the lomo saltado, and sometimes it's amazing (5+ stars) and other times it's really bad with over cooked beef. The beef is almost inedible when it's over cooked because it's like eating rubber. Also, last time I went there were bar-code stickers in my french fries and a piece of plastic in my food. read more
