Three pupusas and pupusas with chicharrón.
    Will C.

I came from jersey just to have the pupusas and I will go back again and again. We order theee pupusas (cheese and beef, cheese and beans and cheese and loroco) all of them were VERY GOOD. The other order was pupilas revueltas with a side of chicharrón and horchata.

Saw the epic line of locals while walking down Bay St and figured this must be a worthwhile experience for $6. Forty minutes later I had two pupusas (revuelta/pork and cheese & a loroco and cheese) and a marañon drink. The pupusas come with a side of lightly pickled cabbage ("curtido") and sour cream. Hot sauce and pickled jalapeño is also available for self service. Pupusas are a close sister to the more widely known arepa, the difference being the type of flour used (corn vs rice flour) and the filling being rolled into dough prior to cooking. These were satisfyingly chewy and moist cornmeal was the dominant flavor - I was a fan of the Salvadoran cheese in both. The revuelta was popular in the line and hit the spot after that long wait but I really preferred the loroco, the green flower stood up well against all that cheese and oil. I wouldn't wait in line for this again but it was an interesting snack. Don't bother with the marañon juice ($3), it reminded me of crystal light.

The pupusas are freaking amazing I ordered a (plantain & cheese pupusa)and a (pork & cheese pupusa) with chicharon and pickled red cabbage. What really sucked was the ordering process it was like being in wild wild west.

2 pupusas, slaw, sour cream, hot sauce, pickles: $6

It was perfect then that I happened to be going for a run in Red Hook when I stumbled upon the row of food trucks right by the baseball field. Remembering the name, I sought out the Solber truck, but it was actually the El Olomega truck right next to it that looked like the right choice, as it had a huge line compared to the pretty empty Solber truck. Therefore, I had no choice but to try both. I started with the Chicken & Cheese Pupusa ($6) at Solber. Though the little Hispanic women working the truck felt the need to laugh at me and make jokes apparently at my expense the entire time I waited, I didn't mind since the food was so good. I kinda wish they talked a little slower and I remembered my AP Spanish from high school a little bit, but I couldn't really make out anything they were saying. After that immensely satisfying mini-meal, I headed over to the long line at El Olomega to try some more of this delicious authentic cuisine. Wisely realizing how heavy that one was that I just had with all that cheese, I opted for the Chicharron Pupusa at this truck (just pork, no cheese) ($5). Not so wisely after a productive run here, I also chose to get the Tostadas, the freshly fried plantain chips ($2). The Pupusa was amazing as I expected - piping hot and very fresh as it was literally just made, but the Tostadas were really incredible. They were so crunchy and delicious, as opposed to the limp, bland plantain chips I typically experience at some much more expensive restaurants. There are a bunch of folding chairs lining the sidewalk near these trucks, as well as a number of picnic tables right inside the park for you to share with others digging in to these delicious plates of goodness. Oh yeah, and did you notice how insanely cheap everything is at both of these trucks? The price of all that stuff I got was roughly the same price as some silly artisanal farm-to-table taco made by some hipster white kid from Michigan in Brooklyn or the Lower East Side somewhere. So forget baseball and Ikea - these cheap little food trucks are the real (or only) reason to come to Red Hook (ok, and Baked has some really good brownies too).

I was craving a fresh watermelon juice from the Red Hook food trucks. Alas, it was too late; they were already closed. Besides, I was hoping for something closer to Smith Street where I found myself wandering. Then, I remembered the empanada lady! I only had to walk two more blocks before I was marveling at the items on her chalkboard. I ended up purchasing a homemade lemonade and ceviche for a grand total of $4(!). Both were served up quickly and with a smile. The lemonade hit the spot, especially since it was not too sweet like most lemonades tend to be. It also seemed to be mixed with some lime and, perhaps, mint. I felt like I was drinking a cocktail; I swear there was rum in it ;) The ceviche was also like a cocktail of sorts, served in a clear cup with a cocktail umbrella and garnished with plantain-encrusted calamari. The fruit, veggies, and seafood were fresh, flavorful, and perfectly blended. I wish I could tell you more about the components of this delightful meal, but I scarfed it down too quickly. Anyway, the empanada lady never disappoints. I have gotten her empanadas, pork dishes, and tamales and have always been satisfied. Soon, I hope to try her stuffed avocado. I particularly recommend visiting her stand after a long day of stoop sale shopping, when you have just a few stray dollars floating around in your wallet. That's all you will need!

Defeated, that only made me want Ecuadorian food even more. I began a mission to get a plate of llapingachos (mashed potatoes laced with cheese and topped with peanut sauce, a typical dish in the Cuenca/Azogues area of Ecuador.) Yelp did not fail me. I walked south and found this place just after some scaffolding. I sat down and was promptly given a menu. Llapingachos are usually eaten with fritada (fried pork) or hornado (roast pork, like pernil.) Them I saw guatita (tripe with peanut sauce) and was almost lead astray and said to myself, No, you came here for llapingachos and llapingachos you shall have. The menu had pictures and I even saw a plate pairing them with steak and eggs. It was a hard decision, but I went with that. The waitress brought out green sauce, called ají in Colombia (not sure what it's called in Ecuador.) my husband ordered the bandeja paisa, a Colombian dish. I waited in trepidation, as I was starving at this point. The food came and I was unsure what to go for first. The meat, the llapingachos, the fried eggs, the salad, or the rice. I gave each a turn. What I love about Ecuadorian cooking, is that there's often a variety of foods on one plate. I hadn't had this plate in ages, so this was a real treat. I wasn't feeling 100% today, so the meal was hearty, yet had nothing to upset my stomach. It turned out to be just the right thing for me. My husband enjoyed his meal, though it was a riff on the traditional plate. They left out the area yet added a few pieces of pork on the bone. He seemed to enjoy his meal. I'd go back. In fact, a personal obligation will require me to be back in the neighborhood in a few days and now I have a little spot to go to that I can trust. I might just try the guatita this time.
