Salsas were both quite good, especially the Verde. The spice and citrus/sour touch was really well executed. Chips are standard thick ones, nothing special. The octopus tacos are out of this world, tho. Octopus is one of my favorites. It's not easy to do well, but when it's good it's REALLY good. This is probably the 2nd best octopus I've had in my 46yrs. Well seasoned, tender, and with the right amount of chew. They also only used 1 tortilla to wrap tacos, which is how I usually end up eating them. Guacamole in the top 5, too. I've never even considered a place this good in a mall/shopping center. We were looking for food and everybody was trying to take us here. It is ok but not the best. They claim fresh seafood and great options but it is mid. This place was recommended to my gf and I from a bartender at Coco Bongo, and it did not disappoint! Our waiter Ricardo (and Luis) made many recommendations that we tried like the El Morro tostada, the shrimp tostada and the seared tuna. All were done so well! We also had oysters which were good size and fresh! Highly recommend this place just off the Main Street in Cancun. A really nice hidden gem! The employees were nice, but this was the first place where I unwillingly discovered that it's common custom outside of the resorts to cook fish in butter. It surely gave my fish a weird taste, but they're not the only ones to do that... I found in the following days that many places here do this. Nevertheless, I enjoyed this spot. The waitress who welcomed us shared that she's from Irvine when she discovered we're from Southern California... that kind of took the exoticism away from it. I asked the waiter about the price and he said it was correct. I let it go since it was a small difference and I would've treated it as a tip. That was just the start of their tricks. We received our bill with the usual 15% tacked on for Cancun touristy restaurants. The waiter said that this was a "service fee" that was shared among all the workers and then the receipt was stamped "tip not included." If the service fee is shared among workers FOR THEIR SERVICE, is that not the definition of a tip? We promptly paid and walked out without giving a second tip. I wanted something a bit different from our hotel food so I did a search and found a few options that were open, looked decent and was within walking distance. We found this place which had a good review about their ceviche so we chose it. Someone helped us to locate the restaurant since it was in an outdoor mall, which was nice. We were seating and ordered 2 shots and everything was good thus far. Then we ordered some food - beef skewers, the filet minion with lobster tail, and of course the ceviche. The ceviche was decent and wow was there a lot of it. We didn't finish it. It looked like enough for 4 people tbh. In any case, we then get the bill and are beyond pissed. There is absolutely no reason for how much they charged us. The food was mediocre at best overall and the filet minion was definitely not that so we didn't eat it. When we made a simple request to change the meat for another lobster tail, he refused and said it would be another charge on top. The bill was just shy of 200.00 USD and he wasn't very accommodating at the end of our meal and was hasty with the bill. I feel like we got 100% ripped off at this place. El Morro is located on the second floor of the plaza where CocoBongo is situated. We enjoyed a table side guacamole, fresh ceviche dish, a parrillada (fresh shrimp 3 ways--fried, bacon wrapped, and in a cream sauce). Based on the reviews, we decided to try this out. It was a little hard to find because it's tucked away on the 2nd floor of the plaza and not listed on the directory. We were the only customers in the place and the staff were very polite and attentive. The food was decent, but not the best I've ever had. Everything was very fresh, but could've used more seasoning. Tons of places in Cancun. I advise you find another with a view and tastier food. Very ordinary. Ordered sparkling mineral waters and they were flat. Ordered sangrias and they were ok. Ordered 2 seafood soups. One came out...then my sons about 20 minutes later. His came with rice and mine did not. Both soups luke warm and extremely ordinary. Tastes like basic broth from carton with canned veggies and frozen seafood medly pieces put in. We were initially going to go all out and get full meals here etc but decided against it. Pricey for quality. Like I said tons of restaurants in Cancun. Don't get excited just because its in the big Coco Bongo complex and it serves seafood. Wish we didn't spend the money at all. read more
