We have put thousands of miles on it since with absolutely no issues. He also puts in the manufactures brand name fluid for your transmission, not the generic type. You get what you pay for here. I'm posting this 5 star review in advance of John even working on our transmission. The transmission in our 2010 Impala is quickly wearing out and had, we thought, recently developed a loud whine. My wife and I went to El Monte Transmission (we had been there earlier to get things ready) fully expecting to get the news that the day for the rebuild had arrived. John generously took the time to listen to the noise and even checked for error codes before letting us know that he did not believe the problem was in the transmission but maybe from a pulley (or some other location). So it seems our transmission is not yet ready for the rebuild but we couldn't feel better about the shop that will do the work. You'll be hard pressed to find a nicer guy and a more honest repair shop. read more

When I was finished shopping around I found his price to be lower than average and based on the conversation we had, I felt comfortable with them. We schedule the tow and a time slot for a potential rebuild. as luck would have it, we only had a blown trans hose, and not a trashed transmission. I had an issue with my transmission this morning and called numerous dealerships in the surrounding area but failed to get any help. Getting a transmission rebuilt is a scary thing, finding a mechanic you can TRUST to do the job is another mental gymnastic... after making an appointment with a previous company i decided to revisit their yelp reviews and came across a review that made me change my mind last minute. Thats when i came across EL MONTE TRANSMISSION and thank god i did! Just like previous reviews stated john is just somebody you can trust with your car. He helped bring back my girlfriends 06 mazda 3!! I cant say enough about john, we had some issues a couple days after receiving the car and the transmission suddenly didn't want to shift correctly and was behaving erratically. Called him up the next day and he told me to bring it by. He stopped what he was doing to figure what the issue was on the spot!! Had nothing to do with the rebuild and had everything to do with an electrical module that he replaced for us for FREE. NO CHARGE. He did not have to do that at all and we're so appreciative of everything he's done. As a girl with a major car issue it's hard to find trustworthy when you don't know what the heck you are talking about. John is about the best there is. He not only got my work car (I need my car to make money) back on the road quickly he waited for me on a Friday later then they are open to make sure I didn't have to wait until Monday to pick up and lose more work. I brought my 2011 Dodge Caravan in for a diagnostic check. I was very happy with the service and getting my car back the same day. The problem was a very simple low fluid level causing serious stalling and scary symptoms. They charged me a very low price for the check and fluid adjustment. I called around asking about my transmission problem and prices about the job to fix the issue, and most shops gave me their estimate. The dealer was quoting $4500; other shops were quoting about $2200 without looking at the car. John's shop was the only one that suggested that it might be something and gave me a diagnostic and ideas about what can be the outcome with realistic estimates. Once I decided to leave John with my car, he was able to do a further diagnostic and pinned it down to a solenoid and had it replaced within 24 Hours. In the end, my repair came out to around $690, and the car ran good as it did brand new. I went to El Monte transmission and met with John, and asked if he could diagnose what I thought was a transmission issue with my 2005 Ford F350 superduty. After spending some time with his code scanner we test drove the vehicle. He determined that my issue was not transmission related. After reading the reviews on El Monte transmission, I decided to take my 1982 Corvette in for a trans rebuild and a mild shift kit installed. The gears were shifting way too early and I had just installed a 350 Summit crate motor, so I thought it better to have the peace of mind knowing the whole drivetrain was done as well. When I spoke to the owner John, he did a test drive and said it seemed fine, but the car would definitely benefit from the rebuild with the shift kit install. He never tried to talk me into anything, John was honest and matter of fact, and he made me feel confident in my decision bringing my car here! And every time I texted John through the Yelp app, he was on point, responding sometimes immediately. He was patient with me and is perfect at being his own Customer Service Rep! Customer service is huge to me, and others too I'd imagine. This little shop never ceases to impress! After I got the corvette back, John had washed my car and it looked great! When I drove the car,...OMG what a difference! Strong shifting through the gears, plus comfortable and sure-footed! Wow, I'm impressed! The price here was much cheaper than buying a new, or rebuilt transmission with the shift kit installed by a thousand dollars, plus a warranty! Needed a clutch job for my 2006 Civic. John was transparent through every step of the process from the estimate to showing me the old parts when I picked up the car. My car was shifting horribly, especially after sitting in stop and go traffic for 30 miles at a time. Just got the car back today and it feels brand new. Brought my 2003 Dodge RAM Truck in to John at El Monte Transmission and he did a great job of diagnosing the problem and giving me a fair estimate on the job. I took my truck to a couple of Dodge dealerships and was being charged almost $5000 dollars to have the transmission replaced when all it needed was to have a electronic valve body replaced saving me over 4 thousand dollars. But now the bad part!!! The transmission fluid pan started to leak so I took it back the next day and they said it just needed to be adjusted. So picked up the truck again but to my disappointment it started to leak again, so they replaced the gasket again but after that the leak go worst. So what we ended up doing is bringing the truck to a local mechanic after 500mL of transmission fluid leaked out and he found that a couple of the bolts were broken and said that the transmission shop tried to drill out the broken bolts and did not get the broken bolts out all the way so that is why the pan was not getting tight. Well so much for this experience. read more

John is a pretty friendly and helpful mechanic. I sent him my 2005 Acura TSX to get the transmission rebuilt. He left my transmission feeling like never before (the car shifts way better). I'm only giving him 4/5 because when I was changing my motor mount the day after I got it back from him, I noticed that one of the screws to the transmission wasn't bolted in all the way. So, I just tightened it myself and no I didn't touch or loosen anything from the transmission. I was working in the front of the radiator and as I was disconnecting the vacuum line from the motor mount under the car, I noticed a bolt/screw sticking out too much. I have a 2002 Silverado with a 4L60e transmission. The transmission was fine. I had a friend have his transmission go bad because of a problem with the valve body, so I decided that I wanted my valve body replaced. So I bought a remanufactured Sonnax valve body from RockAuto as well as the majority of the parts that were needed to replace the valve body and I had El Monte Transmission replace it. It's been 1000 miles now. Shifting fine. The only complaint is that the transmission was overfilled by one quart and I saw some aeration of the fluid on the dipstick so I removed one quart. It's still a little overfilled...like 3/16 above the full hot mark, but I'm happy. Price was very reasonable. The owner was very easy to deal with and a good guy. read more
