I was nervous at first like she didn't ask my name or double check my order but she was spot on. I ordered the alcapurria de carne, two empanadas de carne (VERY good), one empanada de pollo. They were out of shrimp empanadas which they call empanadas pastelitos on the menu. They were also out of the passionfruit juice. I really wanted to try that. Ordered the churrasco mofongo. The churrasco was very good. Pretty decent serving, well seasoned with bell peppers and onions. The mofongo itself was dry and lacking seasoning. I am used to a moist mofongo with garlic throughout. No dipping sauce or garlic sauce/broth served on the sauce. I used the dipping sauce that came with the alcapurria and empanadas. That helped. The mofongo dish also comes with a side salad. Also ordered a side of their plantains. They give you five ripe fried plantains. I would definitely come again but stick to the beef empanadas, plantains and the churrasco dish with rice. read more

I couldn't be happier my coworker and I found this hidden gem! The last time I had Puerto Rican/Caribbean food was when I was in Puerto Rico and the many islands I've visited. People beware, I wasn't expecting authentic food from the Island but something at least edible. For even Texas this is crazy. First, The service counter person was very nice, with four stars, but when I asked menu questions, she couldn't answer them correctly; for example, the beans, what kind do you have? The response was Kidney. I asked if you had a lechon/pernil she stated that's a Mexican dish, wrong it is not !! we all know that's carnitas. The food came with pink beans, not kidney, the pork chops were horrible, like day old/frozen, then defrosted, dry out and, deep fry, shredded when trying to cut, not even edible like a weapon. The rice I ordered was gandules again, horrible it was made without any traditional seasonings, no flavor, plain, no ham, plus it was dried out, reminded me of instant rice, several days old rice reheated. Total waste of money $27 down the drain, didn't offer any discount or replacement all the food was left in place. NEVER NEVER AGAIN read more

I've had some great experiences and horrendous experiences with Puerto Rican food, and this was by far the best. The food is definitely HOT and fresh. I only got apps. The ground beef and the shrimp pastillos we delicious. The pastry was flacky and buttery. The filling is good. They don't have fountain drinks. There is cooler with a variety of drinks. They have about 10 desserts. All seem to be flan or coconut related. I will come back. read more

Amazing authentic food! My husband had the mofongo pernil and I had the garlic chicken with arroz con gandules. Both plates were perfection! We also had a relleno de papa, a beef empanada and an acapurria to try as our apps! All were on point and so good. Hubby did mention the acapurria could've been cooked a tad bit longer but it was still awesome. I would say the hardest part is deciding what to order since it's all great! Worst experience. No A/C. They only had 2 floor fans. We waited around 55 minutes for our food. It was so hott and uncomfortable. The girl that attended us didn't even checkup on us. Anyone that complains bout this place just don't know anything bout Puerto Rican food. I had mofongo with churrasco and alcaburias and my friend ordered pork chops with rice and beans and tostones & it was awesome. Customer service was great! The place closing at 8pm on a Friday is the only negative but, a group of six came in at 7:30 and they welcome them with a smile. I'll be back soon! read more

Great new family owned place! The owner greeted us and asked us to please let her know if anything wasn't to our liking. The waitress was very knowledgeable about the menu as well. We ordered a few appetizers and three different entrees between us, some trying the mofongo and some the rice. We had never had mofongo so didn't know what to expect. I liked it, but it is very garlicky and the serving was more than I could eat at once. I really liked the yellow rice with beans, probably more than the mofongo. We tried different meats; pork chop, fried pork w/onions, and chicken. Of these the pork and onions was my favorite. The best parts of the meal were the empanadas (beef and cheese versions were both excellent and I could have made a meal from the two alone) and the Nutella flan, which was light and delicious with a hint of chocolate flavor. I can't wait to come on a Friday or Saturday to get a guava dessert, they have more desserts on those days according to the menu. They also said you have to come early if you want roast pork, it goes fast. That is more up my alley than fried so I need to take their advice. After my 4 hour test at UTA, I needed to eat! El Mofongo is behind Rockfish on S Cooper. Small, no frills place, and simple. Plastic forks, paper plates, and Styrofoam cups. Menu is pretty simple. They have a few appetizers, mofongos, platters, sides, and dessert. If you want mofongo, You pick a meat; pernil, bistec encebellado (steak w/ onions) chicharron de pollo, fried pork chops, fried pork, shrimp and garlic sauce, and Pechuga de pollo. The mofongos with your choosing and comes with a salad. The same with platters except comes with yellow rice and beans. You can add other sides as well. I had the codfish fritter. It was crispy and good. For main, I got pernil with mofongo. The roasted pork was flavorful and not dry at all. The mofongo was delicious with a strong flavor of garlic, which this garlic lover enjoyed. I will be back to eat my way through the whole menu. read more

Bacalaito - salted codfish pancake - I KNOW this sounds strange but it tastes sooo good. I was going to skip over this until my girlfriend decided to give it a go. Not sure how they did the batter but it's very crispy on the outside and tender in the middle with nice bits of fish throughout. The slightly sweet batter and salty fish work very nice together. We probably looked really American doing so, but we dipped a little in ketchup. The menu makes you think it's the size of a baby pancake but the thing is huge. Guineitos en escabeche con mollejas - pickled green plantains with onions and chicken gizzards - sounds even stranger but very, very good. the pickled plantains are a little briney, the gizzards are chewy, definitely worth a go. It was even better as cold leftovers. Pina Colada - refreshing and tasted full of pinas... and colada. I'm glad I ordered it. so good. Pernil con Mofongo - the roasted pork stole the show, was just amazing. The mofongo was a good pairing, with rich flavors and textures. Alcapurria - Choice of masa or cassava stuffed with beef or chicken. The outside crust was pretty good but the chicken stuffing was stringy/dry and the flavor was a little off (they were out of the beef). I'm pretty sure with the beef filling this would have been just as good as everything else - the crust was nice and crispy with a little sweetness. The service was very attentive and friendly, seems like a family business. We actually came here because the poke place around the corner left us unsatisfied - glad we did even though we really really gorged ourselves even after already eating. Was disappointed today when I got lunch at El Mofongo. All I ordered was the Mofongo, Arroz con Condules, and Caldo De Pollo. I lived in Puerto Rico for 13 years. The Mofongo didn't have much flavor, and the Arroz Con Condules was like they cooked the rice, added a little sasson, and then threw a can of Condules in it very bland. I know in Puerto Rico they use Tocino(Fat back), Olives, and Sasson to make the rice. I was hoping to get authentic Puerto Rican food. Maybe they should get a Puerto Rican Chef so the food is authentic. read more
