MJR is still a great place to eat after many years. Stopped by while back in town for a Friday lunch around 1:00. Very small wait to get a table. Got pretty crowded by the time we left around 2:00 rising to a little bit noisy noise level. We got a guacamole side, taco plate, chicken chimichanga, and blue Cancun drink. Everything was pretty good sized. However, the guac and drink respectively were padded with lettuce and ice. Despite the padding, you still got a good amount--just not as much as it appears. The quality of everting was good, nothing was exceptional, but it was above average. The manager, server, and hostess were all very nice and provided good service. The lot was crowded both when we got there and when we left, but we were able to get a spot. Nice place for a casual sit down or business lunch. Give them a try. read more

We visited this evening after our parents' 50th wedding anniversary and the restaurant was miserably hot. Their AC was clearly not working, several of the wait staff was using personal fans so clearly they are aware of it. On top of that, our server was very slow, most likely because he was getting gratuity since we had a party of 12 so he didn't have to worry about getting a tip. The food was not great, and we were all soaked with sweat by the end of our meal. I would definitely call ahead and check to see if the AC is working before going here anytime soon. read more

Been a long time since my review on Mercado's. They were my favorite Mexican restaurant for a long time. But something happened. What happened was a new owner. They had to go and change things. They cut food from the menu. I loved the beef chimichanga. They no longer include soup with your order took butter off the table. They do still have the great warm salsa and chips. The beef fajitas are still real good and a good price. The flour tortillas are not as good as the old days. I like the margaritas as will. We still go just not as much as before. The service is very good for us sometimes like anywhere they have bad days. We go Friday night and the place used to be busy not anymore. I think it is because they change the menu. read more

I haven't been to a Mercado Juarez in close to 10 years and we had a great experience here on a Thursday night. We were quickly greeted with friendly smiles and immediately seated. The place is massive with plenty of open areas of seating. They placed us in the room beside the bar and we were by ourselves in there most of the time. My Dad enjoyed the TVs in that room to keep an eye on a few college football games. Our waitress was very attentive and friendly. A Manager also checked in on us once. We enjoyed a cold beer, grande skinny margarita & the chips and salsa that were brought promptly. They have nightly specials and on Thursday's you can get a free cup of queso for the table with purchase of an entree. I really enjoy their queso. Not spicy unless you get a bite of jalapeno from the pico which my Mom appreciates being able to eat it. For entrees we enjoyed combo fajitas, beef quesadillas & taquito plate. I used to live in Arlington many years ago, but then moved out of state. We were back for a short visit to Texas, and this was top of my list to return to for dinner. One of my favorite things about this restaurant is they actually warm the salsa. Whenever I mention this to people, they always look at me in horror, but wait till you try it, it's awesome! I had just recovered from a bout of stomach flu a few days earlier, so I was keeping my meal on the bland side as my stomach still hadn't fully recovered. A work group of us (5) went out for a birthday lunch. I was so excited to take my friends to Mercado because they had never been. I used to go there all the time and it was great! They seated us quickly and took our order within minutes. But, 45 minutes later we were still waiting on our food. We finally got it and had to woof it down because we had a meeting. An hour and a half should have been plenty of time for lunch; but it wasn't. The chicken fajitas were like rubber; very disappointing. MJR has been our favorite mexican restaurant in Arlington for 42 years, but sadly no more. The last 3 meals we've had were just so-so, and no longer worth the drive from Mansfield. We were there for an early lunch (11:30) and yet my husband's beef Fajitas were tough and strangely very dry, as if it was the end of service and not the beginning. The guac was very lime heavy and the even the warm salsa (which I will really miss!) had very uneven cuts of onion which were hard to manage on a chip! I've been a huge fan of Mecardo Juarez ever since the chain started decades ago. One reason is their signature "warm" salsa. I love, love, love it. They used to dust their tortilla chips with chili powder to give the chips that extra "snap." Unfortunately, they no longer do that, but I still remain a fan of Mecardo Juarez and their food. Around the corner, I had just gone through an imaging procedure, we were hungry, and Mecardo Juarez was the perfect fit. Who doesn't like margaritas and chicken fajitas? My wife and I do, so Mercado Juarez it was. We arrived early evening so there was no wait. In fact anytime we've arrived at the Arlington location we've never had a wait due to the large size of the restaurant's seating capacity! We ordered bean and cheese nachos as a starter and a single order of chicken fajitas to share plus a couple of frozen margaritas. It was to be able to sit, relax and enjoy our delicious meal. For once, we didn't have to rush off to another commitment. After our drinks arrived, we dove into a basket of hot tortilla chips and Mecardo's delicious salsa accompanied by our perfectly blended frozen margaritas. Shortly our chicken fajitas, plus all the fixins arrived. Can you say "Yummy!" at the top of your lungs. Everything was SO delicious. My large family used to be such regulars at Mercado Juarez that it was a separate line item in our family budget. That all changed when favorites items started dropping off the menu. Pork fajitas, pollo con hongos, pollo loma linda, and others all left. What remains are essentially the basics you can get anywhere. My wife and I tried again today and the same great aroma greets you, the salsa is chunky and warm, and little else is the same. The tortilla soup is thinner and less flavorful. My guiso was tough with a thinner gravy, and several large chunks of beef fat were served instead of tender beef. It's sad that a once staple restaurant has fallen so much. Also clean the women's room more often. My wife reported a nasty situation. At least our waiter was attentive and earnest. read more

I drive by Mercado Juarez all the time, telling myself I should stop there. I was coming home from the airport the other night and there was an accident on 20, I decided, tonight is the night. I went to the bar, ordered a margarita, and watched the beginning of the Packers game. Food kept whizzing by me, smelling delicious and I decided to order a cup of queso. I had full intentions to go home and eat some leftover soup I had made the night before. The lovely man behind the counter brought me some chips and salsa with my margarita and asked me if I wanted tortillas. Always a dangerous question. Do I want tortillas? YES. Was I still under the impression that I was going to go home and eat dinner...also yes, so I declined. My bad. I did order a cup of queso. It had a lovely pile of pico on the side which I immediately dumped into my delicious cup of cheese. I love queso with "stuff" in it. The queso was good. It was warm and liquidly and flavorful. Everything I want in a cheese sauce. The chips appear to be made in house, and the salsa is warm. Not my favorite, but the salsa was good. The temperature didn't bother me, and that says a lot. I was not aware that it was still happy hour, TILL 7! Next time I may opt for a higher end margarita, but the happy hour one was still decent. Once I got the check, it was more than decent. The prices, for what ended up being my dinner, were excellent. The lovely man behind the bar called me by my name when he brought back my card. He thanked me for coming in, and made me want to come back. The seats were worn, but comfortable and they provided me refuge when I was hangry and stuck in traffic. The food at Mercado Juarez is great. We have always had good experiences there until the last visit we had in which our server stole my husbands wallet that was left on our table accidentally. I do not know her name, she did not introduce herself however she had tattoos on both arms, her left arm had circle swirl tattoos. She was in her 20s, hispanic and average height. If she is your server, request someone else because she will not be honest. It is so sad how people are and this was an experience that unfortunately cost way more than the typical lunch. read more

You most likely have to wait in line about 30 minutes during peak times. We'll worth the wait! You get a large stack of homemade flour tortillas and butter with your food. Overall, I don't recommend Mercado Juarez. In my opinion, it's a restaurant whose time has come and gone. The service was spartan, but that's not to say bad. The restaurant was mostly empty for peak dinner service, and there was only one waiter for the entire great room we were seated in. We received very good service, though I had my concerns at the beginning when the glasses of water and Margaritas were very slow arriving. The food was fine, not bad, but well below average. The fajita dish was lively and fresh with brightly colored vegetables. It was a good choice. The enchilada platters, unfortunately, were unremarkable. The best way to describe the flavor of the ground beef is that it reminds me of leftovers; made fresh yesterday. Though it probably wasn't leftovers, the food didn't strike me as fresh. The taco also suffered from the same problem as the enchiladas. The salsa was okay, but it seemed a bit lowbrow to serve it in disposable plastic cups like we're at a sports bar. Overall, the menu options are tried, tired and generally uninspired. There's at least a dozen better Tex-Mex restaurants in the immediate area including Pancho's Mexican Buffet just a few miles away that shamefully would have been a better choice for dinner. The ambiance is colorful and reminiscent of old Spain or traditional Mexico. It's the best part of the entire visit. But, the pink exterior looks like they found a sale on paint back in 1970 and were too lazy to update it ever since. Because the restaurant was mostly empty of customers, the interior frescoes looked like they wanted to tell stories of the glory days of old. In short, I can't recommend this restaurant. 5/5 - Usually menu changes aren't good... this is not the case this time! Got the Juarez Plate and the Guiso, which are items we have gotten before. And OMG... WERE THEY GOOD! Changes aren't always the best choice for a restaurant but being a regular customer, the quality has improved SO MUCH, it wasn't bad before, it was just good. Now it's fantastic. This restaurant has a beautiful interior, it's clean and has a good staff. The food is pretty good too!! THE FOOD: I ordered Beef Fajitas, which came  to the table sizzling hot....just noisy with sizzle (which is great). The beef was on top of a bed of grilled vegetables.  It was fantastic. The Charo beans had good flavor. The rice was kind of disappointing,  kind of bland. There wasn't much spice in any of the food (heatwise). The washroom was clean and pretty nice. We're still on the hunt for our favorite Mexican restaurant, and unfortunately Mercado Juarez is not it. The food and service were both okay, but nothing spectacular. I judge places on their tortilla soup, as it's my standby, and I was disappointed. I also think our experience may have been heavily influenced by where we were sat, which was in the back room alongside a large party, which felt like we were either crashing the party or being banished. I missed the ambiance of the larger restaurant room and felt like that scene in Gilmore Girls when Digger takes Lorelai to the back "private" room. With the multitude of other Mexican options in the area, we can cross this one off our list. read more

I came hear for lunch after a dr's appointment. When I drove up into the parking lot it looked closed but I found that the parking is in the back next to the back of a motel where their dumpsters are.. I after parking I still wasn't sure if they were open because there were only like ten cars including mine in the parking lot. I went in and was seated right away. The waiter came out with chips and two plastic containers of salsa. I tasted the chips and they seemed fresh but the salsa looked familiar. I was sure it was Pace Picante sauce, but after tasting it was not. Although it wasn't Pace it was hot in temperature and a little spicy. It wasn't the best. I have definitely had better restaurant salsa. I ordered a sangria swirl margarita which was good and I ordered the combination fajitas and which comes with guacamole, cheese, pico, rice and your choice of refried beans or charro beans. I chose charro beans. The wait time for the food was pretty quick. So the chicken and the beef was nice and tender but the chicken was salty. They give about a cup of shredded cheese but only a tablespoon of pico and guacamole, so I ran out before finishing my fajitas. The charro beans were okay but the Spanish rice was dry and tasteless. The flour tortillas are homemade and pretty good, the didn't fall apart while I was eating the fajitas. I would not recommend this place for date night. The inside does give off the same decor as an El Fenix restaurant. It was pretty clean. I included a photo after I ate some of the food so forgive me, but you will be able to see the what I was talking about with the pico, the dry rice and guacamole. Please don't take my word. Go and visit if you've never been and judge for yourself. read more

So sad. Been my favorite place since 2000. Went Saturday and reviews are correct. PriPrices are up by nearly 20% food quality is horrible now. Queso was like water. They used to have great flour tortillas. They were very hard and dry. I always order the beef fajita qusadillia. Worst I've ever had. 1 tiny thin piece of fajita meat in each one and the price went up. The first-time in 25yrs of eating there I've had a bad experience. It was 5pm on Saturday and the place was near empty. Will give it one more try. Maybe they had an off day. But looking at the reviews I might be wasting my money.
