Called in for lunch to go. Fast, prompt and friendly service. The atmosphere was nice enough to make me want to go back and eat in. Staff was friendly and everyone walked around with a smile. They also included chips and salsa, that was a treat as a lot of Mexican restaurant no longer add or only if you pay extra. Everyone enjoyed their food and said they would like to try again. I just moved to Signal Mountain from Houston, Texas. Obviously, I was excited to find El Metate just down the hill from our house! (I get good exercise to and from!). The ambiance is comfortable and clean; nothing fancy, typical neighborhood Mexican food joint! I'm joined by seniors like, families and construction workers. It has a great bar and prompt, friendly service! The menu is extensive from carne asada, specialty birria pizza, tacos, burritos, queso and chorizo (my fav) and so much more! Very tasty dishes and lots of choices including a kids meal! Five stars! read more

Good food and plenty of options. We went at a really busy time of night but still got our food super quick! The waitress was either going through something or just not happy to be there. She walked off from us several times before we were finished ordering. She was very short with us and not very friendly. All the other servers were smiling and being really friendly with their tables. The chips and cheese dip were delicious. I'm from Arizona so I know my Mexican food...it's hard to come by good Mexican food in Tennessee but this spot on Signal has decent selection. Salsa is good, the pollo con queso is good, the fajitas are my go-to. If you're needing some Mexican food quick and affordable price, this place can fill that void. read more

Just Ordered A Meal From El Metate Restaurant On Signal Mountain Located In The Plaza. A 2 Year Old Could Have Made That Meal With It's Eyes Closed. I Was Charged Over $16.00 For That Meal, So I Called Them And Told Them My Meal Wasn't Right, Well Non Of Them Can Speak English Well So He Proceeded To Call Out What I Had Ordered And He Didn't Even Get It Right. So I Told Him "Ok I'll Find Some Where Else To Buy My Food Now On". I Have Ordered Food Almost Every other Week From Them, But Not Anymore. If your under 23 and wanting a margarita or anything from the bar expect to be interrogated and asked for multiple forms of ID! We stopped in while visiting for the 127 Sale to get a nice cold beverage and dinner from our busy day. Only to be turned down because they "don't like to serve to younger people out of state". Food is typical Mexican food but comes out quick and hot. But not something to go out of your way for. We had the fajita barrito and pork tacos both are good portions and enough for left overs. Bar tender did comp our appetizer since the manager was being difficult for us. So this made us feel a little better but not his fault. All in all not bad but not something to rave about. read more

Service is better than the food. They love their cheese sauce which is ok but it seems like Velveeta cheese. The tortillas are the same ones you buy at the grocery store. It doesn't seem like they even heat them up. I'm used to Mexican restaurants that make their own. Lastly, the salsa is so mild and they charge for jalapeños. Holy fajitas!!! We are from San Diego and we know good Mexican food. This is the closest thing to traditional Mexican that we've found here. With that said, my husband had the burrito Hawaiian, clearly not traditional but delicious. We ordered takeout and it came in perfect condition, nothing spilling, all hot and correct. Very disappointed, especially on Cinco de Mayo! We arrived before five and the evening rush. We were seated quickly, but at the table that was closest to the kitchen and the restroom. We ordered the single shrimp fajitas to split. They brought the dish quickly. We thought it odd that there were pineapple slices in the fajita. The green peppers and onions could have been cooked a bit longer and the shrimp seasoned more. We had to remind the waiter we were supposed to have beans with the dish. When he brought them he also brought the sour cream and picco and told us he had put in the wrong order (Hawaiian fajitas). By then we had picked thru the dish and had our fill. Hands down the best freaking restaurant on Signal. I've lived up here all my life, and no restaurant on signal has ever compared to the near god status of Metate. A true classic for post Sunday service munchies. I go here as often as I can, (ever since the place opened) and have never had any issue. Anyone that says otherwise is a one time customer, or straight up lives to write trash reviews. You won't find better Mexican food this side of the border, and the service is Chick-fil-a tier. read more

We were really surprised how delicious the food is here. I wasn't really expecting much from the exterior looks of the area, and the less than stellar reviews, but I would actually come all the way back out here because it was that good. (I live very far from here and was in the area to take my daughter to camp). We both loved it. I would give it five stars if we had gotten any refills on drinks, but I'm still satisfied with the experience we had here. (We had the chunky style guacamole, and the "pollo con queso" with rice, which is the same and just as good as the "pollo loco" we typically get at our local favorite Mexican restaurants. Since my wife's Uncle lives on Signal Mountain we have had the opportunity to eat here at El Metate several times. Each time we have come away disappointed. My wife and Uncle ordered Margaritas and found them to be very weak on tequila and heavy on the mix. They soon ordered a side shot of tequila to bring them up to par. I do have to say that I was happy to find Victoria beer available. It is a favorite of mine as it became my go to beer in my many trips to central Mexico over the years. Now the food, Uncle did not complain about his Burrito Especial but the Rellaño de pollo that my wife ordered and my combo plate #1 were as tasteless as we had remembered the food to be the two times before. Though my wife did recall that the tortilla soup at a past visit was very good we kept our commentary to ourselves so as not to offend Uncle who insisted on treating us to this meal. In subsequent visits to the Mountain we will try to avoid another disappointment at this establishment. Sorry, but this was just not a very good dining experience. read more
