The only reason I gave 2 stars is because the food was okay and the manager came to the table to take our order We walked in to be seated and the host led us one way grabbed a couple menus and then turned and asked us where we wanted to sit unfortunately we picked the wrong section - the waitress took FOREVER to come get drink orders and then couldn't understand anything we asked (Texas Margarita??) she didn't speak clearly enough for even me to understand (and I grew up in the melting pot of ethnicities and accents in Chicago) We finally got drinks - water for me because of the aggravation so they missed out on a bigger ticket since only one person had alcohol We then waited at least 20 minutes - the manager noticed and grabbed a napkin to take our food orders. Food came out pretty quick and was good - we waited again to get our check - by this time the rest of the staff was sweeping floors and cleaning tables - what should have been 45 minutes turned into 2 hours This has not been my experience previously but it's going to be awhile before I go back read more

We have Eatin here a few times and the first time it was so good and it's progressively gotten worse. I paid $32 for 6 soft chicken tacos (which I was only givin 4) and a large queso and salsa.... and the tacos were so bad not only would my 4 year old who eats literally anything not eat them I could only eat one and a half... I pulled out a bone and there was more onions and nasty tomatoes and peppers in the taco than anything. I'm so disappointed. I will say they do have good service from the few times we have gone, but unfortunately the last 2 times have just not been good so we will not be back. :( read more

This place never disappoints. We never have to wait to be seated even when they seem to have a full house. Their service is fast and friendly. They have a huge selection of menu items including lunch specials and happy hour. I always, always, always get the Caldo de camarones (shrimp soup) which is extremely satisfying! It's a broth based soup with warm pico, huge shrimp, and rice mixed in, served with a side of sliced lime and warm tortillas. My husband gets something different almost everytime and has enjoyed every meal. What a find, after being so restricted due to Covid. It was a jot to eat out again. Of the multiple Mexican places I've eaten at this is one of the top ones. The menu is large (but not too large) and has a variety of authentic choices. We went with the shrimp nachos, very light and balanced on toppings versus chips and the queso sauce. The Cincro Special was as close to Paleo as I could get while my son had the Fajitas. Both were excellent. Portions are large, so expect to take some home for lunch/dinner the next day. Staff wore masks (correctly), some guests did as well, but not all. We did except at our table when eating. read more

This was my first time in Rolla so it was a bit difficult to figure out where to eat as reviews were all over the place and some places looked suspect. We found El Maguey through yelp and decided to give it a try. When we walked in, it was busy so that was a good sign. I was a bit suspicious of real Mexican cuisine in a town like this as I'm used to Californian authentic Mexican. Service was prompt and thorough. The food was Americanized a bit and not authentic, but that was okay with me for the day. My food was outstanding! I had a chicken fajita quesadilla and it was bomb! Now, the rice and beans were not up to my expectations but I was too full of chips & salsa to care as much. I didn't need the extra carbs after that quesadilla anyway. Tried it for the first time. I judge a lot by the beans. They were GREAT. Got a lot of food for the price at lunch. All very good. But I had to take away a star when I was charged a fee for using a card to pay. As far as I am concerned the fees they should pay are all part of doing business, especially in today's times when most people do not carry cash. I get the feeling they discourage cards by charging the fee so most will pay cash and the owners can avoid taxes. I guess they took their cue from all the Asian nail places that charge for card use. We walked in around 7:00 on Monday night. We sat at the bar and were waited on by friendly staff immediately. Our beer was cold, best kind, and our food came promptly. My husband had the Tostaguac, which is a beef or chicken tostada with guacamole on it. I had my usual Chicken Fajita Quesadilla. Everything was hot, delicious and the portions were generous. Instead of standing around the employees could stand to use a bottle of windex and some paper towels to clean the windows, doors, tables etc. The salsa was very ordinary, thin and rather bland. It was served in a small decanter with a saucer. Not even a bowl, a saucer. It made no sense. We ordered guacamole which came out of a jar. The entrees were not appetizing and were pre frozen then microwaved. They were served watery and tasteless. I couldn't eat mine after looking at it. Luckily the waitress didn't charge me for it. Two things are surprisingly good here: the carnitas and the shrimp soup. Would recommend either of them to anyone. The service is also very friendly here and they remember you after your second visit. I have only been in Rolla for month and was gone for a week of that time. I have however found time to eat here three times and it is great food. It is very fresh and authentic food that has a great flavor without the grease. I have ordered many different items on the menu already and have no complaints. Mondays they have great margarita specials and they actually have a good tequila flavor. The dining area is quiet but it is a little small.
