The food here was AMAZING! I can not complain about that but the service here was the worst I have ever received anywhere. Our reservation was at 5 and we got sat pretty fast. Then after waiting 45 minutes for a refill on drinks (about 6 drinks) and chips. We FINALLY got someone's attention once they decided to bring our food out. They gave someone the food to the wrong people and there was so much communication issues!!! We had a party of 10 people and we asked ahead of time to split our bills. The waitress ANGELICA with glass gave us the worst service! She had a HORRIBLE ATTITUDE. She told us we will all put it on one bill and split it but we told her that's not what we wanted to do. She pretty much told us she didn't have the time to take care of us. Then after waiting again 45 minutes for someone to come give us refills on 4 dollar drink we had to go get someone and get our own boxes. After this she decided to give us attention by telling us how much money we owed. When she was trying to divide the bill I asked again wouldnt this be easier to just split them. She was in my face and glaring at me and told me she was another party to take care of and didn't have the time. After realizing the bill was almost 3 hundred I was furious at the automatic tip she was trying to receive. I went inside and expressed that I wanted separate bills but the waitress lied to the manager of the night and said we didn't. I expressed what had happened and then the manager asked the waitress to separate them. As the manager was walking away she decided to make a rude comment "this is something you should have done at the beginning of the night and we wouldn't have this problem" I immediately told the manager I will not accept her help and wanted someone else. Visited for dinner to celebrate my daughters birthday. During the meal we noticed 7-8 COCKROACHES crawling up the walls and on the ceiling. When we pointed it out to the staff they said they had to call a manager and they had tried but the manager didn't answer. We took pictures with our cell phones because we couldn't believe it. Before we left I made sure to leave my name and number so the manager could call me. No call from the manager so I decided to call. So the manager then got on the phone and stated he would give us a $30.00 gift certificate for a return visit, seriously we had COCKROACHES where we were eating dinner. Keep in mind I spent about $231.00 dollars for dinner the previous night. When I asked for the managers name he then hung up on me!! We had been extremely loyal customers prior and regularly had dinners and lunches here. NOT ANYMORE. If you like COCKROACHES then this is the place for you. read more

Me and a friend went in to try to have an early dinner. We were greeted by about 5 people who seemed to be standing around. We were seated at our table but no one approached us to take our order or get us drinks for about 45 minutes so we assumed they forgot about us. I told a waiter that we were ready to order and she just said that she'd get our server with no apology. We waited another 10 minutes and left because no one came. The place is pretty cool with nice outdoor seating. The downside is parking, where they have a very small parking lot and it's really cramped. So if you're trying to back up, be careful. I suggest not driving a huge truck or van, since it really takes most of the space and getting out would be really hard. You may also park along the curbside of the restaurant, but it's usually packed. The food is okay, not the best. I've had way better enchiladas from other restaurants. It tasted kind of bland in a way compared to other restaurants. The waiters here are horrible. They take awhile to get your food, and they don't come back to ask if you wanted a refill. And when we were waiting for the waiter to take our credit card to pay, none of them would stop by our table. They all walked past us, we even had our hands raised, some looked and walked away. Others walked away without even acknowledging us. It wasn't even busy that day, you could also see waiters talking to each other like it's their day off. It was ridiculous. Never again. We went on a Tuesday for lunch. There was only one other couple there eating al fresco and we could hear them saying how good their entrees were so I asked what they were having. I ordered the Seafood enchiladas. It took 20 minutes to come out to the table and the "seafood" turned out to be a dried seafood paste used for making soups. It was so disgusting and salty beyond belief. I sent it back and asked the server to recommend her favorite. She said she really didn't know what to recommend.i told her to just surprise me. Out came the plate with a soggy little taco, burnt beans and salty rice. We left immediately and will never return. I recently had the misfortune of ordering take out from El Jardin. Big mistake. I placed the order at 9:00PM and was told to pick it up at 9:15PM. I arrived and they were surprised that I had arrived and said my order would be ready in a few minutes. It arrived a half an hour later. They also got both orders I placed wrong. And, the food was terrible. The refried beans were runny. Its as if the Chef had scooped up the liquid at the bottom of the pan and called it refried beans. I have been a customer for over thirty years and am saddened to see how bad things are now. I will not dine there again. read more

La Migra was visiting relatives in town and needed a taco fix. Not sure about the ownership of the place, but the waitresses all seemed to be related. Good blood line! I want to start off by stating that the food was good, no complaints. The Cadillac Margaritas however are a misrepresentation of what the menu states as a Cadillac margarita. The menu CLEARLY STATES the Cadillac marg has Grand Marnier as an ingredient, to my dissapointment I came to find out upon my first sip it had ZERO Grand Marnier. I asked the waitress for a seperate shot of Grand Marnier because my marg had none, and she insisted it DID! Long story short, the extra shot she brought back was NOT Grand Marnier, but instead a knock off brand of VSOP brandy orange flavoring. So just know you are paying 14 dollars a drink for cheap liquor! The cost of food and beverage has gone up, and I am sure the restaurant business is having a hard time, however up charging and lying is not the right way to get business. The waitress at the end brought out the actual bottle of Grand Marnier and what a surprise! It was completely different from the other shot she had brought. Grand Marnier has a thicker syrup consistency and the other stuff was lighter, horrible tasting, and thinner consistency. After another visit to El Jardin, I am even more convinced that this building used to be a house. We were greeted and directed to the room to the right of the front door. On the plus side, the small room meant more private dining. But I also noticed that the tables and chairs were rather densely packed. You have to sit close to the table, and you definitely know when the people behind you get up or sit down. They passed out menus to each of us, and placed a basket of chips at our table. We perused the lunch specials. I saw too many things I wanted to eat, but I didn't see any tamales listed in the lunch specials. Finally, I settled on a steak burrito. The chips were outstanding. We really liked the puffy flour chips, but the corn chips were browned and crispy too. The red salsa was good but nothing out of this world. My friends and I emptied a couple of baskets of chips well before our lunch arrived. I was starting to worry we would ruin our appetites by eating all those chips. Finally our food was plated. The burrito was excellent, and the steak was flavorful. Given how many Mexican restaurants there are in Turlock, I am really picky about my Mexican food. Well. We just left. First time coming here and were excited to try the food. First of all, we were standing like idiots outside thinking someone would greet us there. A waitress came out, looked at us, and proceeded to speak with her table. Normally a waiter would tell you to pick a table or go in to be seated. So after a few minutes, we went in. There was a stand where a gentleman said he would be right with us. We stood there, like idiots again, waiting. There were at least 8 waiters and A LOT of open tables, no greeting, no we will be right with you. The gentle man came back a few times. Still no direction on how long it will be or if we should sit down. Finally, we just walked out. This is usually a sign of how my whole service will be. I liked that the restaurant is centrally located. I also like that they have outdoor seating and that the business has a garden feeling (like it's name). Then, we got our bill and ended paying $75 and change for 2 adult meals, 2 kids meals, 1 pork tamale (la carte), and one fountain drink. My silly shirmp quesadilla with frys was $18.95!!! Ever been to Turlock, CA? No? Good. Pretend Turdlock (as everyone likes to call it) is a bullet and I took one for ya so you won't experience the pain. Period. But if you do for some reason find yourself in this godforsaken stretch of valley in NoCal hit up El Jardin Foods great, Sangria is strong and fried flour tortillas mixed with corn tortilla chips is always a nice surprise. Also, they mix chopped cabbage and tomato, onion, cilantro and pickled jalapenos and serve it in a separate bowl next to their salsa. A welcome change from the traditional chips and salsa normally found in SoCal or even the North Bay. So drink a gallon of Sangria, fill up on fried flour tortilla chips and enjoy their great food. Not impressed at all. The place looks promising enough from the street, but that's pretty much where the promise ends... and ends rather badly. From the cramped, uncomfortable seating arrangement, to the tiny rooms doubling up as dining areas. One needs to remember that few restaurants can 'do' the 'converted house into a restaurant' shtick well. However, I would have forgiven all that if the food was up to par; which it wasn't. I am truly surprised at all the good reviews here. Considering we have a plethora of establishments serving mexican cuisine, one would expect the restaurants to step up their game;m but El Jardin is a miserable fail. Our cabbage slaw had no zing, and didn't have the crisp, spicy, vinegary bite that one has come to expect. Rather it seemed to be a tired, ho hum attempt. The main courses were even more disappointing. The spouse ordered the Mole, and I the chicken verde. The mole was watery and basically tasted like brown water. Mole is usually thick and rich, with a varied spice palette... not so in this case. I swear that my verde sauce was out of a can. For the price they charged, the food was presented on cheap, smallish dinnerware . And finally... to add insult to injury the bathroom had no paper towels. They only get one extra star because their staff was friendly and attentive. First and last visit. read more

I really want to give this place 5 stars...I think I should give it 3 stars. I'm going to settle for 4 stars. The GOOD: The food is awesome. In the many many years I have been coming here I have never had anything but great food here. The margaritas are good, the outdoor seating during the winter is always fun and I am a huge fan of the flour tortilla chips. I also love the cabbage salsa. The BAD: The place is small. You can sit outside but if you sit inside it can become loud quickly. Its an older house converted into a restaurant so sound really resonates in here. You can park on the street but there is a lot in the rear and it can be hard to find. The last time I was there I was approached by a rude and rather "ghetto" waiter. Seriously, when I ask you a question and you walk away from me...don't come up from behind me later and interrupt me only to ask "what happened?". Nothing "happened" I asked you if I could sit where ever I like since no one welcomed me when I walked in...."yeah yeah you can sit where ever" was his response. Tacky! I ended up leaving because I don't like someone I have never met acting like we are "homies" and I can't stand uneducated ghetto BS in what is supposed to be a pleasant and I would think some what professional establishment. I think the correct thing would have been "Can I help you?" or "Yes you may sit where you like...how many menus do you need?" (ok my rant is over) My Point: I took a break from this place because of the one bad apple....but I will return eventually...maybe. I guess the food is too good to stay away forever. I have been to the El Jardin in Sonora, Columbia and Oakdale. I have to say t hat the best by far of those three is the Oakdale location. My husband and I eat there whenever we get a chance...he works in Oakdale. I usually get the chicken quesadilla, and my hubby usually gets a carne asada taco and a chicken taco. I also recommend their enchilada's both chicken and cheese. YUMMY! They have decent margarita's as well which we all know is a must at a good mex restaurant! read more

Hate it!! We came for lunch and I'm still here. We waited 50 minutes just for someone to take our order after asking several times and keep in mind it wasn't busy. Finally after 50 minutes we ordered a fajita salad with chicken and no cabbage. They bring us beef with cabbage and their margarita was just blended ice so we had to return it and wait another 20 minutes. Finally got our salad when we were full. Came here for lunch with my co-workers :) Quaint lil' restaurant nestled in Turlock, CA. Chips and salsa were initially brought out while we got settled and before we ordered. I ordered the lunch special carne asada beef burrito. The service was very prompt and our food arrived relatively quickly. The carne asada in my burrito was extremely flavorful =] I had also requested a side of guacamole and sour cream along with lime wedges and hot sauce because I cannot have a Mexican meal without the essentials ;) They did charge extra for the guacamole and sour cream so my lunch special with the sides cost me ~$11 (including tip) but my lunch was DELICIOUS and def. worth my ~$11 =] Service was great. I recently discovered El Jardin and I was very pleasantly surprised. Having grown up in Northern California, I am something of a Mexican food connoisseur, and I am always excited to try out a new place. The restaurant is clean and has a lovely seating area outside, where I sat. The place was nearly empty, being a Monday afternoon, and the waiters were very helpful, friendly, and quick, until the end when I needed a box and had to wait for quite a while, but that could happen anywhere. Many people mentioned their chips and salsa in their reviews, and it was a pleasant surprise to find flour tortilla chips, but I don't think their salsa is anything to write home about. I prefer chunky, pico de gallo salsa, and theirs was runny and lifeless. The cabbage is also offered at other restaurants in the area so I didn't think that was a big deal either. I ordered the steak quesadilla grade with green sauce, and it was delicious! I would highly recommend El Jardin--in fact, I may go there again this afternoon! read more

Numerous times our drinks and chips sat empty and we had to get the waitress attention for re-fills. There was hardly anyone in the restaurant, so that wasn't the issue. My cousin suggested El Jardin for lunch last weekend. After skipping breakfast I couldn't wait to chow down here. We ordered drinks and got our chips and salsa before receiving our menus which was fine since the chips were awesome. I believe its a deep fried flour tortilla mixed with corn chips. Reminded me of the chips at Club Jalapeno in Carmel-By-The-Sea (which I literally have driven to just for the chips). We all ordered combo plates. I got a tamale and fish taco. Both were ok. The fish taco didn't come with a lemon or lime which would have been nice. But Im sure I could have ordered it on the side. Prices were slightly high for the area in my opinion. But the service was good and the waiter and waitress were very nice. We sat outside which was beautifully decorated. Parking is kind of odd in the back, but well labeled. read more

The food is okay, it has gone downhill recently. I don't know what exactly has changed, but this place is becoming a dive. It was once a "fine dining" joint, but my lastest visit made me wonder what happened. We were seated inside and were left to look at the menu for 10 minutes before we were asked for our drink order. Another 15 minutes before our food order was taken and we had to ask for refills. The place was very loud with people trying to talk over the music. I could not carry a conversation at our table and my ears rang for 30 minutes after we left. Again the food was fair, not what I would expect for El Jardin and definitely not what I've had there in the past. It was not overly busy. There were several empty tables. Can't figure out why service was so sloooow. With several options in Turlock for the same kind of food, it will be awhile before I go back here. AN HOUR and received nothing but a basket of chips and salsa for a table of 8 including children! Mind you we were seated at a table that fits only 4. A buser came and asked for our drinks twice and never did we receive them. A waitress finally came to take our order apologizing for being so busy blah blah blah.
