We stopped here on our way back from Tahoe on Labor Day and were so glad it was open! The location is adorable, with nice decor and plenty of seating. We got our chips, salsa and cabbage, and we noticed that the chips were so-so (plus a few flour chips were in there) and the cabbage was not spicy at all, so it ended up tasting bland. We liked our entrees (fish tacos and fajita), although the fajita, like at most places now, was mostly made up of onion. For happy hour we got $1 off our beers. So I had a party of 3, and there was a wait (they told us 40 minutes) so we waited, and we waited....... over an hour went by and I asked what was taking so long?? I pointed out that there were open tables, so the hostess grabbed menus and finally seated us.. someone took our drink order, and apparently our waitress was "too busy" to even come around so they told us that our food order would've been a long wait as well because they had a bunch of backed up to go orders... they didn't serve us chips and salsa bc apparently they ran out lol.. so after being there for almost 2 hours we got up and left. Wow what a great restaurant. They nailed everything, from the ambiance to the service to the food. My boyfriend and I ordered a 2 combo plate and vegetarian nachos and everything blew us away. The nachos were extraordinarily good, thanks to the copious amounts of various cheeses and really unique beans, which were much thinner than typical and made a better nacho topping. The portions were generous and we left patting out bellies and wishing that we had ordered only the nachos. Other notes: The service was fast and attentive. The floors inside the main house are really cool mosaics that cover the entire dining area. The main house isn't the only dining area though; be sure to check out the covered patio and outdoor spaces. read more

I really had my hopes up about this place because I'd heard so many good things about it. When we first got in there though, the waiter seemed oblivious to us, even though five of us were in there and awkwardly waiting and standing around, waiting to get his attention. After a while, he noticed us and told us he'd clean a table for us. We saw that he had left to clean it, but then attended to a different table, and forgot to seat us. Finally, we just sat ourselves down. We ordered, and the food took a very long time to come out, but IT WAS WORTH THE WAIT! I ordered Chile Verde and it was amazing-- definitely the best I've ever had! I tried a bite of my brother's supreme burrito with the red sauce, and it was also super tasty. I hadn't been to El Jardin since I was a little girl and my husband and I drove past tonight and decided to stop. It is busy enough but not too crazy for a Friday night. We were immediately seated outside on the front porch. The outdoor seating is adorable. I love the vibe. New favorite Mexican food place for sure. The food was AMAZING as well. I'm super happy we decided to stop here instead of our usual place. The only thing I would say is they don't have very many beers on tap. Kind of a bummer. read more

My wife and I have been El Jardin a few times. While some of the times, the food was good and service was decent, we had a really terrible experience on July 4, 2017. Sure, the restaurant is a block away from the parade route. And as a child of parents who ran restaurants, I understand busy on a busy holiday on a busy street. Our problem was being ignored. First, they were not friendly about my wife bringing a 15-pound, maltese poodle. They have outside seating in the patio. They reluctantly seated my wife in the far end away from anything. That wasn't the biggest problem. We sat for half hour before any water and chips and salsa was brought to us -- we saw everyone else getting served -- while no one came our way. We flagged down a bus-person who finally brought us water and told him we were ready to order. "I will go tell someone." A second bus-person was flagged down and she turn around and brought as chips and salsa. Again, we asked to order. "I will go find your waitress." Inpatient, I stood up and got the attention of a waitress. I asked to order. "Oh, I will go check and see who can take your order." Finally, they sent a young lady to take our order. We expressed our displeasure of being ignored and she said they were busy and people had been here since 11. My wife sat down at 10:45 a.m. By now, we've sat for 45 minutes. She took our order and said, it will be a while since we had all these people in front of us that was here before us. No they weren't. My wife sat down at 10:45 a.m., 15 minutes before they opened. Irritated and unwilling to wait another 45 minutes for a burrito, we decided to leave. They didn't deserve my money and our business after ignoring us for 45 minutes and then took us we would have to wait longer behind all of those other patron who came after us. There are plenty of Mexican restaurant in Turlock to choose from and we will most definitely choose any other before returning to El Jardin. read more

Ask fire an enchilada with red sauce (not on the menu), even I who am not into sweets I ordered the churros with ice cream (named something domingo) it was just the right size for a party of four to share. Food was so delicious! I had the combination of 3 enchiladas a la parilla (grilled) with rice and beans. Everything was so flavorful and they did not skimp on the chicken inside the tortillas. Grilling them makes the cheese on the outside melt perfectly and a little crispy on the edges. Their margarita menu also looked delicious and will have to come back to try one. read more

I am so sorry to say El Jardin in Turlock was not good at all today. The iced tea was warm and had no ice it was also pretty much just colored water and the food was cold. The red sauce seemed as though it came straight out of a can of tomato sauce. This is one of my favorite restaurants and have been to almost all their locations and I have never been disappointed. It took a while to get a table that can be expected it took even longer to get our food order taken and then when it came out it just was very poor disappointed. Hopefully they'll be back to normal in the future we'll try them again. read more

I never give bad reviews but here we go. I gave 3 stars tonight because the food was okay but the service was not. There werev4 of us dining tonight. 3 of us got our meals one did not. We figured they waitress was going to come back with it only she never did. We flagged down another waiter and asked him to check. He said he would and took off. This has now been about 15 minutes. Our waitress comes back and tells us there was a mixup and food will be out shortly. Shortly comes and goes. I share my fajitas with my meal-less son. Finally his meal us brought out. He eats, we're ready to go and the bill comes. In the past, when we've been someplace where they've screwed up a meal the waitress/ waiter/ manager will offer to take some portion off the tab. No offer was made so I asked. Waitress tells me she will have to talk to her manager. Off she goes. Again we wait. Finally, after another long wait she comes back and says since my son ate the food that they couldn't take anything off the bill. They could give us a free dessert. We wanted to leave so I asked " How about a $10 gift certificate that my daughter can use next time ( she lives in Turlock and has eaten at El Jardins several times and $10 was the cost of dessert) No, that would not be possible. I declined that offer and asked for the bill, waitress didn't have it with her. I handed my card to my daughter and I left. I don't know how she tipped or if she tipped . I do know that this won't be a place I go back to and it's a cute place. So disappointing. read more

We love El Jardin for several reasons but most of all is the atmosphere. The patio area is divine set in front of a darling house that you can eat inside of. The outdoor patio has a fountain and umbrellas for day time and candle light fot evening. It is spacious and relaxed and has a garden feel. There are several different spaces to choose from depending on your preference. Thats all before we discuss the great food. I like everything I get on the menu but I lean towards traditions like sopes and enchiladas with green sauce. My som swears by the carne asade though and gets it every time although tonite he was brave and got the steak taco and gobbled it up. He has a huge appetite but the childs menu still sustains him and is well priced. They have a full bar and great beer and wine selection as well as delicious desserts- everything from flan to fried ice cream to homemade churros with chocolate sauce. They always have parking available and they do have a tv that plays the soccer games for those that follow! read more

Dined here tonight. Big mistake. I ordered a veggie burrito supreme. It was awful. I have ordered this in the past and it was great. Tonight it didn't even have rice in it. Just beans and zucchini. And it was as if the beans were submerged in liquid, I thought at first it was a puddle of green sauce. Wrong. A puddle of bean goo. Wait was over twenty minutes to just order. The server said that all the salads come with beans even if it's not listed on the menu. I said that's scary because what if someone is allergic and her response was oh well. I've eaten here a few times for lunch when in town on business and thoroughly enjoyed the meal each time. My favorite would be the carnitas burrito followed by the fish tacos. The portion sizes, while not ridiculously huge, make sure you don't go away hungry. I'm assuming that the chips and salsa are made onsite as they are addictive. One star is far more generous. I would give them negative stars if possible. This place is not well managed and their customer service practices need a revamping. We waited for over 40 minutes and our order was not taken. When we were asked for our drink selection we asked for coffee and we were told that they only had decaf. We accepted since we all need coffee in the morning, but we come to find out that they just didn't want to make regular coffee. We did have three different waiters and the only good, professional and friendly waiter there made us regular coffee. When we had had enough of waiting we decided to go pay our bill and go elsewhere, we were told that they didn't take our order because they had a large group ahead of us. We watched this large group walk in. I proceeded to tell them this and she said, " well it didn't make any sense to take your order since we were not going to make you food until their food was out". With that said, I paid for my drinks and left. Moral of the story Jardin, take care of all of your customers in a prompt, efficient and friendly manner. We will not come here again and we will make sure that the people we know will not be a patron of your establishment. read more

We came for dinner on a Sunday night. We called the day before to make a reservation for 2 but we were told they don't take reservations and it would be okay since it was a Sunday night. We checked in 5:50pm and we're told a 20 min wait. At 6:10pm we were sat at a table. They have plenty of staff members running around without any type of organization. We had to track someone down to give us our chips and salsa that a table who was seated after us (with a reservation) received first. Finally after 10 minutes of sitting we ask who our waitress was to order. At 7:10 we asked if our food was ready, if not we were leaving. The waitress said she would check. She didn't come back so we went to the inside and she was standing at the kitchen window. She said they were just starting the food. We asked her to have them stop and we were leaving. We paid for the margarita and left. As I was signing the bill, I received a very soft apology. We were told that it took so long because the restaurant was full. It was more than half empty. I'm super bummed because I was looking forward to trying a new spot, but unfortunately for them we will not recommend or return. read more

Mediocre at best. The service was below average and the food was a joke. Good luck getting what you order here, I asked for the shrimp diablo and my wife got the shrimp with green sauce. Mine was supposed to be the SPICIEST thing on the menu and hers was supposed to have mushrooms. Food comes, mine is so bland that I'm convinced they didn't put ANY spice any it and hers is 99% onion, 5 little shrimp and no mushrooms. The tails are still on ALL of our shrimp, forcing us to use our hands to remove them, we had no utensils and had to wait for those as well, I ordered a side of THE SPICIEST salsa in the entire restaurant, and by this point I am convinced that this entire kitchen is afraid of chili peppers. It was about as spicy as cold mayonnaise and not much better tasting. Mexico is the chili pepper capital of the world, maybe this restaurant should take that into consideration when making "Mexican" food. The only thing that did not disappoint me about this restaurant was getting up and leaving after we paid the bill. I've been to taco trucks in warehouse parking lots that made 100x better food in half the time at a 10th of the price. And at least they are considerate enough to throw a little jalapeno my way when I want a little extra heat. Okay, so anyone who knows me KNOWS I am an El Jardin fan! Today that changed. I ordered a bowl of Caldo de Pollo (one of my usual orders) this afternoon, well...halfway through the bowl I'm stirring and notice something pokey bobbing up. It was a TOOTHPICK!! I mean, what in the world. To add to the situation when I told them/showed them that there was a toothpick in my soup all I got was an "I'm sorry." No asking me if I would like another bowl or something else, and when the check came it was STILL on the check. I mean, I'm not asking for hand-outs, but I am a regular customer and I could not believe that all I was offered was a "sorry." When I went up to pay the bill I asked, "Sooooo, do you happen to know how the toothpick ended up in my soup?" I was told that they use toothpicks to keep their taquitos and chimichangas together. There are no taquitos or chimichangas in Caldo de Pollo, so either someone was being negligent or...I don't even know...maybe I don't want to know where it actually came from. Ignorance is bliss, I guess...?? I mean, what would that bowl have cost them if they had said, "We are so sorry, we've taken the soup off your bill..."?? Beyond the actual price I paid, I can't give you an actual figure, BUT I can tell you that it cost them a regular customer. read more

I have frequented this place for years and have NEVER had such BAD service! Went there on Saturday (05/01). Took about 45 minutes to be seated (which was fine, they were busy,no problem). Once seated someone came and took our drink orders, took about 15 minutes before we received them. No one came to take our orders until I walked inside and asked and then asked AGAIN, probably 20 minute wait for that. Once she took the orders it was about 30 minutes before two out of three orders were received and they were at best just warm. About 15 minutes later (when the two were just about done eating) they come out with my order and it was WRONG! I told her just take it back, I don't WANT ANYTHING at this point I was to mad to eat. Someone tried to bring it out AGAIN! I once AGAIN said "I DON'T want it!" They had ZERO, organization that day! When we went to pay the bill they offered to let us take it home. No thanks, don't want it! It was very sad because I have always been fond of this location, USUALLY great service and great food and now I don't think I will ever go there again! read more

The worst service I have ever had in my life. My sister got 3 ice cold sodas spilled all over her back, we stayed calm and asked calmly if it was ok if we werent charged for my sisters meal since her back and part of her hair were wet, and an older lady was super rude and said the only thing was that they could do was replace the drink (didnt even offer to not charge the drink) and we continued by stating that my sister was drenched in soda as well as her phone and everything in her purse and she asked what a free meal had to do with getting drinks spilled on her. I continued by asking if she was going to pay to get my sister a new phone and clean her clothes (just to reciprocate her same logic and prove a point) and she restated that she could only replace the drinks. We asked to speak to a manager and he was not there so they had to call him, he said the only thing they could do was give her a free margarita.
