A bit of a delayed review, but I was at the Jade District Night Market and saw that El Inka was there. I got their beef antichuchos which were delicious. It had a nice flavor, not too hard to chew or eat. It came with some boiled potato, sweet potato, lettuce and your choice of sauce. I chose the green one which is mild. Really great snack to have. Our meal yesterday was fantastic, just finished the leftovers. We started with the Yucca Frita, which came with some red onions in lime juice with tomatoes and some hot peppers and cilantro, kind of like a salso. Then we had the Pollo Escabeche, which was some fall apart rotisserie chicken with a savory spicy vinegar sauce and tomatoes onions potatoes sweet potatoes peppers and more. The sauce had some substance to it, kinda chicken gravy like with a reddish hue from the tomatoes and peppers, it had a bit of a kick to it, nothing crazy though. We also had the Sudado Pescado, which was fish and veggies, including yams, in a light sauce. It was really good too. I can't quite put my finger on the ingredients: citrus, butter, spices, fish stock? There were three sauces, a green cilantro one, a red hot sauce, and a yellow aioli like sauce that was good with the Yucca fries. We ordered to go, and barely managed to get it home without spilling too much sauce in the bag. I regretted every drop lost to the bag, it was good! It would be nice to eat there, where that wouldn't be a problem. The ambience was simple, like a restaurant in Latin America (I've never been south of Nicaragua, so I'm extrapolating...) I missed this place when they closed two years ago. I was delighted to see them reopen in Portland. The restaurant itself is not a place you go to for ambiance. Parking is on the street. However the warmth and friendliness of the proprietor lights up the place. We had the anticuchos, empanadas, chaufa, cordero seco , and caucau de mariscos . Everything tasted great. They're ok but they don't come close to the flavor delivered by the spice-infused, wood-smoke cooked birds offered by this Peruvian eatery. Owner Claudia Fernandez is from Guatemala but discovered Peruvian pollo la brassa -- barbecued chicken -- in Los Angeles and recreated the dish at home. If I want my fire roasted chicken fix, I'll go out of my way and venture here. After a few visits, I don't think I can find another place that has chicken as moist, juicy, and well seasoned as other joints in town. One of my best friends insisted there is a place that has Peruvian food that won't break the bank. I caved in finally and checked it out myself. The interior is small and quaint. The service is spot on and super friendly. It is best to come here in small groups since the place is not huge. For anyone that is new in coming here - get the whole chicken combo. It can easily feed 2-3 people for about 20 bucks or so. It comes with about 6 or so pieces of roasted chicken with some of the best home made fries in town. They remind me of how my mom used to make them and these are fluffy and tender fries that are waiting to be dipped in the home made sauces. The salad is pretty sad however - just iceberg lettuce and some veggies topped off - I recommend skipping the salad and ask for a substitute if possible. Get the $1.50 2 liter Inca Cola to help wash down all that goodness too. It may not be for everyone but it is definitely worth a try. There are about 5-6 home made sauces you can dip the food in - the red spicy sauce kicks siracha out of the ballpark. The garlic cream sauce is also a great alternative to the spicy red sauce. The green sauce is unique and tastes better mixed with the red sauce. The whole chickens can and have run out in the past due to the sheer popularity and the price factor. Luckily it hasn't happened to me yet but I heard other dishes are just delicious too. So if your looking to try other Peruvian restaurants - this will not disappoint one bit! read more

We drove about 15 miles to try this restaurant and after reading the positive reviews. We arrived around 6:30pm midweek. There was a table of 2 already done with their dinner so it wasn't busy or crowded. Our party of 7 ordered the fish stew, caucau (tripe) stew , chicken in cream sauce (benchmark) seafood soup and roasted chicken. All were delicious and flavorful. Loved the chicken in cream sauce . It tasted creamy and the chicken was very tender. It was this dish that turned me onto Peruvian god and it was a winner. My mom is born and raised in Lima, Peru, and while I was growing up she would always find these hole in the wall, family-run restaurants that served Peruvian food the way it should be, as comfort food. This place is tucked away between 82nd and the freeway on Division, next to a tow truck place and a statue garden. My wife and I would have to drive over to Lima in Beaverton whenever we wanted really good, stick to your ribs Peruvian food, but now we have found our place. We absolutely love this place. If it's your first time, try the chaufa de carne or the bistec a lo pobre (my two favorites). Best of all? My mom loves it too and says it reminds her of growing up. We haven't done a dine-in dinner here yet, but ever since we moved to Gresham a year ago, this has been our favorite place for take-away. Every single time, we order the whole roasted chicken and fries and salad. The chicken is fall-off-the-bone tender, savory, and is accompanied with a variety of delicious sauces (my favorite being the yellow sauce, my partner's Fijian roots leaning her towards the spicier, earthier green sauce). The fries are not like any pub fries or fast food fries you'll ever get, rather like the fries you used to be able to pick up at the "Steak Escape" in the mall back in the day. Fresh cut, with all of the charm of the potato still in the actual fries! We're pretty shameless when we eat their food. We leave only bones. By the time we've arrived at our house with the smell of the chicken and fries having food-hot-boxed us for the ten minutes prior, we are ravenous. They're super friendly when we pick up the order. Be sure to order early though- they have actually run out of chicken before, which has made for a sad, sad night. read more

Everyone raves about the fire-roasted chicken. If you are going to go there, get it. Ours was tender, juicy, and full of flavor. I don't think it's the best chicken in PDX, but it's solid and very respectable. Probably 4-start worthy. Unfortunately, we found the rest of the dishes far less impressive: - The full chicken comes with a huge bundle of french fries, which 2 times in a row have been really soft and soggy with grease. Our group of 6+ people couldn't/didn't want to finish them. Though I'm not a chef, I was guessing their fry oil temp was too low which didn't give them any crisp. Something as basic and fundamental as making a decent fry shouldn't be a problem! - The Jalea Mixta (kind of a seafood/veggie mix) had that overly-strong seafood smell/flavor...the kind where the stuff smelled it it wasn't super fresh. Not to mention that I'm pretty sure the veggies (consisting of corn, peas, and cubed carrots) were from a frozen bag. - Finally, I found the infamous "Inca Kola" to be, perhaps, the sweetest drink I have ever tasted in my life! The beset way I can describe it is that it's like bubble gum flavored higg fructose corn syrup mixed in equal parts with Mountain Dew; bleh! It's way too sweet to be paired with any dinner item, in my opinion. Admittedly this is directly the fault of El Inka since they don't make it, but beyond trying a couple sips for the novelty of trying a historically Peruvian soda that's been around for ~80 years, I really don't see why they carry it. So yeah, consider trying El Inka to support this unique mom and pop restaurant, and if you go the roasted chicken is by far the best dish to get and highly recommended, but don't blame me if anything else you try is kind of disappointing. read more

Came in for lunch and it was very good. Empanadas are nice and tasty, not heavy and greasy. just as good as Pambiche's on the NE side of town. I also had the Ceviche, I'm a huge fan of this dish. When it's done right. This Ceviche hit all my marks as a good one. Fish was fresh, the use of lots of fresh lines and the red onion was crunchy the Aji Amarillo paste was just about perfect, sweet potatoes and regular potato was on point. A must have if you eat here. This is NOT Mexican style Ceviche so don't expect that style. This one is just as great, in my opinion. My friend had the roasted chicken 1/4 cut and it was huge ! We stopped in here when it first opened many years ago, but the place was really funky and served nothing but chicken. Then, as now, the entire back wall of the place is an open-flame rotisserie full of, falling-off-the- bone, roasted chickens. I was pleasantly suprized when we dropped in for lunch today, because the place was, except for the rotisserie, completely rehabilitated. It's still very small, but the inside is nicely decorated, and the menu offerings have been extended to include seafood and vegetarian - smart move. The owner recommended, and I ordered, the Jalea Mixta. It's a plate of fried fish, shrimp, and calamari on a bed of, your choice of fries or yucca. The whole thing is topped with marinated chili pepper. They use something - I suspect lime juice - in the marination process that creates, a pucker your lips, sour chili sauce that is really unique and delightful. I'll be spending some time trying all of their Mariscos offerings - and loving it. read more

I've read about El Inka in many posts, blogs and magazines. As a low frills Peruvian restaurant with amazing Peruvian roast chicken. We were in Gresham, to stop by and check out the gift card for cash exchange machines, otherwise, it's not normally an area we're in. Pulled up into the parking lot around 3pm. There were only 2 other tables dining. We started off with empanadas, which were filled with chicken and raisin. These alone were worth the drive, tasty delectable empanadas. Unfortunately the highlight for me was not the chicken. It kind of tasted like baked chicken that was slathered with seasoning. I did not experience the crispy skin, that most wrote of. I missed out. Pollos a la Brasa El Inka is simply one of the best dining establishments in the Portland Metropolitan area. My wife and I try to dine here at least once every month and bring friends along to enjoy the excellent, authentic food and superb service. You can't go wrong with anything on the menu, but I want to spend a little time on their standard whole chicken entree & their version of ceviche! The chicken is perfection! The owner, who is a wonderful and very kind/generous woman, informed us that the chicken is seasoned for two days and cooked over an open flame in a brick oven visible to diners. The skin is just crunchy enough and delectable while both white and dark meat are tender and full of fall of the bone deliciousness. I can not describe how tasty this chicken is and all the flavors that burst into your mouth with each bite.....you absolutely need to try it for yourself! A yellow (mayonnaise based), red (like Asian hot sauce), and a green (like salsa verde) sauces are provided for the chicken...the red sauce is the best IMHO. Their standard whole, half, or quarter chicken plates come with a simple dinner salad served with Italian dressing and out of this world fries that are fresh, not greasy and a perfect compliment to the chicken. My wife loves the ceviche as do I, very different than Mexican or Salvadorean ceviche with a heavy emphasis on the cilantro flavored greens, key lime or bitter orange and a bed of sweet potato. Extremely tasty and not too heavy. You may be enticed to sample another excellent appetizer, the Peruvian version of plantain bananas which are not as oily as their Jamaican or Salvadorean counterparts but equally yummy especially when dipped in the sweet sauce provided. This is a true Portland Metro area gem, reasonably priced, authentic and with superb service....you feel that the owner & her staff really want you to enjoy the entire experience of dining each and every visit. We went there because they were recommended by YELP! We've never been there before, nor have we eaten anything Peruvian. I'll post photos on my profile and YOU decide for yourself. I'm adding, then gave minuses for each negatives. They roast their chickens where people in the small dining room can see. Their menu said on top: "Best roasted chicken in town". On their website, "We are on the Best 35 Restaurants". I've heard (not yet tasted) of the Filipino Empanada, I thought I'd try that! I couldn't find anything else on the menu I wanted, so I let my husband order whatever he likes. He ordered the 1/4th chicken with beans and rice and the Inka Cola (made by Coca-Cola), which was unusually good, but I'd rather have no carbonated drink. It's yellow! Our waiter keeps apologizing, about our meal because of the Empanada. That's OK, we weren't sure how long, but he came to apologized to us 2-3x and now I'm starting to wonder. We were the only 3rd one in the room @ that time, but while eating there were three more tables came in, so it wasn't that busy when we got there. So, he handed us a wrapped cookie, before we got our meals. Never mind about that, let's move on to the food. My Empanada came in, it looked presentable, I actually enjoyed it! Hubby's chicken I wanted a piece of his chicken wing, but it looked raw. (see photo). He was starving! But he tried not to eat too close to the bone. What if we ordered half of a chicken, the leg would be more raw, but this is the chicken wing. . . I'm trying not to imagine what the leg would be like. We ordered the half chicken, yuca, and a side of rice and were very impressed! From ordering to receiving the food, it was probably at most 5 minutes. Gresham serves up a winner. Actually, there were a number of places that oozed charm on scenic Main Street, it's too bad the city has a questionable rep. El Inka is located in a strip mall and reminds me of the best Peruvian spots of Los Angeles. This is no Andina in terms of atmosphere, price and authenticity (and that's a good thing.) The Aji de Gallina, chicken in a spiced-milk gravy, was scrumptious! The rice was on the dry side, but this seems to be the norm for Peruvian. Serve this heavenly dish with soft Japanese Calrose rice and the bliss factor goes up. Another wonderful must-try is was a non-meat stew, I don't remember the name, it was very colorful. The three sauces that accompany the meals-classic green Aji being one-should be bottled and sold. Again, the versions Andina offers don't even come close. By the way, I realize the two restaurants are completely different, but most people seem to reference Andina when it comes to Peruvian food. We were also a fan of the fried fish with vinager sauce, a good deal for $9.50. The only slight let down was the classical Alfajores. Andina's version of these caramel cookies is probably the best in town; those from Las Primas in NE are also tasty. It's a popular lunch spot and there's usually only one server. I would run through El Inka's menu like I do with most other places I've rated five stars, but it's just too far to make this happen anytime soon. read more

Chicha Morada, Ceviche, and Jalea Mixta are a must try. El Inka specializes in chicken, but for some reason my dad and I fell for the seafood. We ordered the Ceviche de Mariscos to start and let me tell you, there's a reason everyone raves about it. Its like a Ceviche performance with strong showing by rich, flavorful seafood backdropped by its own iceberg lettuce leaf. We then ordered the 1/4 Chicken and Jalea Mixta to share. The Chicken was tasty with a crisp exterior and zesty spices, though the seafood stole the show. The Jalea Mixta was a crunchy pile of awesomeness with 3-4 fried seafoods on top of fries. You gotta love the Peruvian obsession with fries: they put them in everything and it works. Make sure you get the three sauces: the green aji that's a little heavy on the coarse parsley, the mild yellow mayonnaise-like sauce, and a spicy red sauce that I could swear was sriracha (apparently the Peruvians know good spicy...and its a Thai sauce made by Vietnamese immigrants in Rosemead, CA). The green and red sauce both make the Jalea Mixta all the more exciting, while the yellow sauce (or red if you're looking for a fire in your mouth) actually goes quite well with the chicken. Oh, the Chicha Morada is a must! Such a great, full, and refreshing flavor on a hot day. While we sat at our patio seating (really more of a couple of tables practically in the parking lot of the strip mall), several Peruvians arrived for dinner with the whole family in tow. If you've never been to Peru or tried Peruvian, you need to order the yellow, bubble-gum flavored Inca Cola just for the thrill (though you probably don't need the full 2 liters several families ordered). Stopped by while I was in the area for lunch and for $8.99, you get choice of 1 of 2 apps (I went for the cilantro chicken soup - - chicken was ridiculously tender and the soup has great flavor), the entree of the day, which happened to be pollo a la brasca (loved that they have an assortment of sauces as I love to sauce it up. I was in the Gresham area for work and was fearing for my food options. My coworker and I were driving looking for a place to eat and I saw the name on the maps app and we headed that way. From the outside it is a fairly misleading store front, it doesn't look like its going to contain one of the best meals you could possibly find east of SE 70th Ave (no offense to people that live this far out, I just love my food carts and such in the inner portion of Portland). We walked in and were greeted quickly, we started reviewing the menu and were hopeful right away. So many vegetarian options (in Gresham!??!?) and other delicious sounding choices. I ordered a 1/2 chicken with beans & rice, my coworker ordered the chicken that was stewed with carrots and onion in a hot sauce. The food was amazing, juicy tender chicken. Amazing herbs and spices, their sauces they provided were great. In fact, I was just there yesterday and will likely be dining there again today or tomorrow.
