    lomo saltado

Wowie, Jarana brings the Japanese-Peruvian fusion that Portland didn't know it needed. Tucked away behind Lulu Bar, this cocktail bar serves delicious drinks and dope food. There's no table service and you order food and drinks from the bar. We came on a Thursday at 6:30 and the place was pretty quiet but got busier as the night goes on. They also feature various DJs in the evenings during the weekends. The ambiance is dark, classy, perfect for a date night or just enjoying good food in a cool location. We ordered the lomo saltado and chicken katsu bowl. Food did take a minute to come out, but boy was it good. The saltado was savory, tangy, and the chimichurri sauce freshened the dish. The steak was tender, juicy - perfectly cooked. The garlic rice was fragrant and had a hint of coconut - a beautiful pairing. The chicken katsu was crispy, juicy, not too heavily breaded. The coleslaw was light, refreshing, zesty. All the flavors and textures blended and harmonized like a fine-tuned orchestra. Everything was a hit, and it's always a double win in my books when a cocktail bar has food that is worth coming back for. The Nikkei cuisine that Jarana has highlights both cultures and adds to the diversity that Portland offers.

Jarana is located inside of the bar Lulu and is absolutely wonderful. My party and I dined on Bone marrow, Octopus, empanadas, oysters, and calamari. We all thoroughly enjoyed the dishes but especially the seafood options. We came away impressed with the selection of food on the menu as these dishes are not your typical idea of "bar food." Richie and Gary, the chefs on hand, were extremely friendly and accommodating when serving us. Additionally, the staff at Lulu was awesome as well. All around a great evening out and we will be definitely be returning!

The ambiance was romantic and hip at the same time. The food was good. The dessert was weird which is why I only gave it four stars.

Delicious late night option. You do need to walk through a club to get to the food in the back, but the quality and flavor is worth it!

While we were there, it was dining month - so we had a little prefix menu. Oyster trio to start with some bubbles! Wonderful start, but they sure give a lot of fresh horseradish! Salmon dip platter was perfect! Chicory Salad with fried oysters was good, but too much radicchio for me, so bitter! I loved the bread and it's complementary! Lemon Raspberry dessert was so-so. I would come back to try more!

I like to freestyle when I travel, but I also like some structure, so I made a reservation to ensure no delays prior to attending a concert not too far away. The staff & our server made this special occasion great, and the food recommendations were really good. We enjoyed the fact that our server recommended things that he had, but also paid very close attention to what other people enjoyed and also offered those recommendations even though they weren't his top ones. He asked all the right questions and we picked some solid items prior to our concert. We started with some warm focaccia bread served with whipped butter. We decided on a half dozen Oysters as we wanted to try all 3 varietys. They split it off for us with 2 separate plates and talked about each of the ones we were going to have. We also had the Salmon Tartare and the Dungenous crab roll filled with plenty of crab and not filler! We also had the Chicory Salad with fried oysters that they also split for us & the Chicory Salad & the Manila claims... also really good. Of course, we had a few cocktails... starting with the "Detour" which used Batanga blanca tequila with a hint of mint to it (elevated margarita) aslong with a few Pear Necessities. To end it all we went with 2 scoops of the "Marion Berry" sorbet. (I'm originally from DC so I had to get one)....Everything was great and I would definitely return!

They're clean, fresh, and thoughtfully sourced. Beyond oysters, the menu is surprisingly strong across the board--the fish was some of the best I've had, and the appetizers are both diverse and genuinely well-executed, not just filler. The atmosphere adds another layer. The layout is unique, with walls covered in historical photos and newspaper clippings that make it clear this isn't just a trendy spot--it's an institution that's been around for over 120 years for a reason. The crowd reflects that range too: couples, families, friend groups, and larger parties all fit comfortably. The outdoor seating is especially beautiful, right in the heart of downtown Portland, and the location itself feels safe and well-trafficked, which matters more than people admit. Service was excellent and impressively efficient. We had a 6:30 reservation on a packed Saturday night and were seated exactly on time, which is rare for a place this busy. The staff was attentive, accommodating, and clearly experienced. Between the full bar, strong non-alcoholic options, and overall consistency of execution, it's the kind of place that earns repeat visits--I'll absolutely be back, and I'm glad I was talked into going.

Craving oysters (when did we become these people?!), we stopped in for lunch, ordered a half dozen (and later, another half dozen), plus the Rockfish and Chips, and the Hot and Crispy Fish Sando. Everything was enjoyable: the sando was reminiscent of an upscale Fish Filet (I mean that in a positive way) with a tiny bit of heat; the Rockfish were fried in a salt-and-pepper-y seasoned batter that paired well; and the oysters, of course, were a particular highlight, as previously mentioned, since a second set was ordered to finish off the meal. The only disappointing thing about the whole meal was a rather uninspired spicy Bloody Mary, which didn't really do much for me, sadly. Service was friendly and attentive, and the covered outdoor dining area was spacious, well-lit, and warm enough to be welcoming and comfortable. There's also a secondary covered and fenced dining patio that is dog-friendly, which is another perk! And lastly, the market and bar inside boasts a heaping helping of fresh fish finery coming in many forms: fresh, frozen, 'frigerated, filleted and fried, either served over the counter, or available to-go. Lots of smoked salmon options as well! Very cool place, and one that my wife in particular has fallen in love with. We'll definitely be returning, likely for dinner next time, to see if the menu is expanded with additional options such as scallops, swordfish, steelhead and other seasonal selections.
